From the Executive DirectorPublic Access MAkes conservAtion tAngible to everyonein 2012, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy had the honor of working with landowners and partners to care for and cherish many of our region’s most pleasing places. As the early shoots of Spring begin to bring the green back to our mountains, many of us get the urge to go out and feel the sun’s brightening rays at a favorite local outdoor spot. Last year saw CMLC protect 417 new acres at 9 new places – several of which are now available for public recreation.

we doubled conservation acreage at the top of publicly-accessible Bearwallow Mountain and acquired a tract on US-74A in gerton that serves as a trailhead for the larger network of trails we are developing in the Upper hickory nut gorge. we also helped add 65 acres to dupont State Forest and acquired 9 acres in Tryon that may one day become part of the local greenway system.

public support for greenways and recreational access seems more widespread than ever. CMLC has worked with many partners to pursue a greenway along the French Broad river in northern henderson County, starting at the County-owned westfeldt park. recreational use of the river will also be boosted via several projects in the works that will add or improve access facilities at river road-crossings. CMLC looks forward to continuing our work with a broad array of nonprofit and agency partners to see these goals come to fruition.

in places as diverse as the Village of Flat rock, the Town of Lake Lure, and the East Fork headwaters of Transylvania County, CMLC is working to achieve local goals and create new parks and recreational opportunities. This spring, join hundreds of fellow outdoor enthusiasts participating in CMLC’s white Squirrel hiking Challenge or Bearwallow Beast 5k Trail run & Festival—get out and see first-hand the many natural places to cherish in our region!

BearWaLLoW MountaIn 84 more acres | hEndErSOn COUnTYThe grassy meadow crowning the top of 4,232 foot Bearwallow Mountain affords one of the best views in all of the Blue ridge range. To forever protect this scenic jewel, the Barnwell family

and CMLC first partnered in 2009 to place 81 acres of the picturesque mountaintop into a permanent conservation easement.

in 2012, the Barnwell family and CMLC again worked together to protect an additional 84 acres of the iconic henderson County peak. The newly conserved land on the mountain’s western ridgeline surrounds the length of the popular one-mile hiking trail that accesses its summit.

The additional conservation at Bearwallow Mountain was made possible by funding from the national Scenic Byways program, Buncombe County, and the Conservation Trust for north Carolina.

Family matriarch, pearl Barnwell, lived to see 165 acres of her mountain protected before passing away at the age of 100 in january 2013. The newest conservation easement on Bearwallow Mountain honors pearl’s memory. She is survived by her son, henry Barnwell, daughter nancy Lyda, and grandchildren Tammy Lyda, jeffrey Lyda, and jennifer Frady.

rush MountaIn 59 acres | hEndErSOn COUnTY“we have enjoyed living adjacent to this undeveloped, wooded land with its variety of wildlife,” said landowner david Thomas.

“we decided to preserve it in this condition for the future.”

Fifty-nine acres of unspoiled forests and scenic waterfalls on the slopes of Flat rock’s rush Mountain were permanently protected through the generosity and good will of david and Merrily Thom-as. The Thomases placed the tract into conservation easement, as well as conveyed ownership of 55 of its acres to CMLC.

hosting a tributary of Mud Creek, the easement protects water quality downstream within the French Broad river watershed. its conserved forests will also forever preserve scenic views from nearby Little river road, part of the state-designated his-toric Flat rock Scenic Byway.

CMLC may one day develop public hik-ing trails on the property. The project was made possible with the support of the nC Clean water Management Trust Fund and a donation by Fred and Alice Stanback.

2.2 acres in the Sherwood Forest community in Cedar Moun-tain. “My mother acquired the land with the idea to protect it,” explained Ted. “we feel like we are carrying out her wishes.”

Though small in size, the newly protected tract is especially rich in conservation value, fronting 1,000 feet of the Little river directly upstream from the Little river wetland Complex—a Sig-nificant natural heritage Area—and dupont State recreational Forest. it also hosts critical habitat suitable for federally threat-ened species like swamp pink and mountain sweet pitcher plant. The easement adds to 1.5 acres of ecologically-significant lands previously conserved by CMLC in the Sherwood Forest community. The ramsaurs also donated the underlying ownership of the conserved property to the Sherwood Forest pOA for addition to the community greenspace.

tryon GreenWay CorrIdor 9 acres | pOLk COUnTY“we wanted it to serve the common good,” said Bob Lewis about the nine acres of land in Tryon that he and his brother, donald Smith, donated to CMLC. By expanding future public recreation opportunities and safeguarding water quality, that’s just what their gift will do for the town’s residents and visitors.

The gifted land adjoins more than 78 acres of park lands owned and managed by the Town of Tryon, including a 24-acre tract that hosts the Vaughn Creek greenway, now under develop-ment, and the 54-acre Ziglar Field. The donated parcels may ultimately enable a half-mile extension of the greenway. CMLC facilitated the acquisition of the initial greenway tract on Vaughn Creek in 2011.

The project will also protect water quality in the north pacolet river watershed by buffering tributaries of Vaughn Creek. The project was aided by a grant from the Conservation Trust for north Carolina.

WaLnut Cove MountaIn 64 acres | TrAnSYLVAniA COUnTYA new conservation easement adjacent to the pisgah national Forest protects the forested slopes of walnut Cove Mountain, near Lake Toxaway. hosting an upper headwaters tributary, the 64-acre easement also safeguards water quality of the French Broad river watershed.

The easement was donated by george Lenze and family, owners of CMLC-conserved Everett Farms in pisgah Forest. CMLC has held a 140-acre conservation easement on the farm since 2003.

CMLC now buffers the pisgah national Forest with conserva-tion easements totaling 1,237 acres on its borders, thereby expanding wildlife corridors and preserving scenic viewsheds.

tWIn Lakes 21 acres | hEndErSOn COUnTYTwin Lakes has generously been made available to the Saluda community for fishing, swimming, and picnicking for more than 60 years by the wilkes family. A partnership between Saluda Community Land Trust (SCLT) and CMLC will ensure that this cherished local parkland will be accessible to residents and visitors to enjoy forever.

Owners james T. wilkes iii, william wilkes, and holly wilkes donated ownership of the 21-acre tract to SCLT, who will own and manage it as a public park in perpetuity. CMLC holds a conservation easement on the land, preserving the scenic for-est surrounding the lakes and safeguarding water quality of a tributary of the green river.

upper hICkory nut GorGe traILhead 31 acres | hEndErSOn COUnTYA new, publicly-accessible trailhead for the Florence nature preserve (Fnp) was acquired in partnership with henderson County parks & recreation. Located off of highway 74A in gerton, the trailhead provides ample parking and easier access for visitors seeking out the Fnp’s five miles of hiking trails.

Trail dynamics and volunteers from the Carolina Mountain club constructed a half-mile sustainable trail that links the trailhead to the preserve.

The tract was purchased from previous CMLC- conservation land-owners john Myers and jane Lawson, who protected 35 acres surrounding the hickory nut Forest Eco-Community in 2006.

Acquisition and trail construction at the new trailhead was made possible by funding from the parks and recreation Trust Fund, national Scenic Byways program, and generous donations from Fred and Alice Stanback, the Fernandez family, Bill and jerry McAninch, and Tom and nancy Eubank.

MystIC Waters 82 acres | rUThErFOrd COUnTYBoard of Trustees president, Lynn Carnes pitts, and her hus-band, russ, deepened their commitment to land conservation by donating a conservation easement on 82 acres of their property south of Lake Lure. The land hosted the Lake Lure Camp for girls beginning in 1927 and Camp Occoneechee girl Scouts Camp since 1956. The easement will forever preserve the picturesque setting that has inspired learning and leader-ship on the land for nearly a century.

with the belief that being on the land provides enhanced aware-ness and a deep connection to self, russ and Lynn now operate a retreat center, Mystic waters, on the property. According to Lynn, “it still seems to carry the memories of all that those girls learned over the years. The spirit of the land here inspires people to get back to their roots and to be creative.”

The easement permanently buffers nearly two miles of tributaries to nearby Cane Creek and maintains suit-able habitat for three dozen rare species found nearby.

stone MountaIn 65 acres | hEndErSOn COUnTYdupont State recreational Forest grew 65 acres larger this year with the help of CMLC, the nC Forest Service, and conservation partner Tom Oreck.

The tract, located on the north slopes of Stone Mountain, is part of the Stone Mountain/

rocky ridge Significant natural heritage Area. it hosts endan-gered green salamanders and other rare species on its slopes.

protection of the tract was 10 years in the making; CMLC and partners first identified it as a conservation priority in 2002. Oreck purchased property and then worked with CMLC and nCFS to transfer it into public ownership with funding from the nC natural heritage Trust Fund. “This is a property that

belongs to dupont State Forest. i’m excited that i’m able to do something good for the community,” said Oreck.

Since 2006, CMLC has facilitated the addition of 200 acres of public land to dupont State Forest and has buffered it with 3,711 acres of conservation easements.

it is once again time to share CMLC’s annual report. As al-ways, the highlight for me is recognizing the generous donors listed on these pages. To each of you and on behalf of the CMLC Board, i extend a heartfelt thank you!

we are indeed holding our individual and business donors ever closer to our hearts these days as the reality of the “fiscal cliff” begins to edge toward the “conservation cliff”. Usually, conservationists wholeheartedly appreciate cliffs; nothing beats standing on the edge of a viewpoint and looking over spacious, scenic views. But this “conservation cliff” is going to require a lot of donor support to climb.

As you may know, much of the important conservation work accomplished throughout north Carolina was made possible by government grants and contracts. it is a fact that many public grant funds have already begun to dry up. Our 2012 income from government grants and contracts, as a percentage of our total revenue, was down by 14 percentage points from 2011. This is a good trend only if the revenue can be replaced from other sources. i am pleased to say that CMLC donor contributions increased by 153% in 2012, helping us bridge the “conservation cliff”. CMLC is well poised to meet the challenge because of you, our loyal contributors. thank you once again!

The purpose of it all is the day-to-day conservation and care for the natural lands and resources that make our region special. And at the heart of our mission is the willing landowner who partners with CMLC to conserve their land, sometimes with tax benefits and sometimes without, but always with some financial sacrifice. These same landowners often contribute mightily to provide the financial support needed to protect that easement investment with critical stewardship work. we are deeply grateful to our past landowners as well as those joining us in 2012. without them we would have no work to do. Thank you Landowners!

in the words of william Shakespeare, “I can no other answer make, but thanks and thanks and ever thanks.”

Creating an Edible Forest at Eagle’s nest Camp

CMLC’s Stewardship Team again part-nered with the staff and students of the Eagle’s nest Camp and The Outdoor Academy, near pisgah Forest, to build upon invasive species removal efforts implemented last spring. CMLC’s Ameri-Corps Stewardship Associate Cheryl Bolton led efforts to plant 85 native fruit and nut trees along the banks of Eagle’s nest Branch, a tributary of the Little river. The new trees establish an “edible forest buffer” along the riparian are of the creek.

CMLC staff, community volunteers, and students from the Outdoor Academy planted the trees using sustainable permaculture practices to promote their

honoring our lAnD Protection funD Donors

in 2007, CMLC began a quiet but persistent fundraising effort to establish the Land Protection Fund (LpF). donors to CMLC’s Land protection Fund can take credit for supporting many extraordinary projects, including several conservation milestones in the organization’s history. Starting with an initial lead gift on the worlds Edge project—which ultimately led to the creation of Chimney rock State park—the LpF has been used to protect 22 properties in four wnC counties. By providing immediate funds in advance of anticipated later reimbursement, the LpF has allowed CMLC to act quickly to conserve sites such as Connestee Falls in Transylvania County, weed patch Mountain in rutherford County, dyeleaf Mountain Farm in Buncombe County, and parts of the Cane Creek greenway in henderson County.

we are deeply indebted to the generous donors listed below for contributions totaling more than $400,000, which have enabled over $2.2 million in expenditures toward urgent conservation projects. “The fund has leveraged grant dollars and private contributions many times over, all while allowing its assets to be continually replenished and reused,” stated kieran roe, Executive director. please consider whether a gift to our Land protection Fund would match your personal desire to help us protect our ancient mountains and historic rural landscapes we all love.

long term survival. Located adjacent to the camp’s garden, the buffer not only reestablishes habitat for wildlife but also expands the camp’s educational mission to promote individual development and connection to the natural world. The buffer, which includes varieties of native persimmon, plum, and blueberry, offers the students an opportunity to learn about the important role of native trees in conservation. CMLC worked closely with staff and students of Eagle’s nest Foundation, including Outdoor Academy head of School Ted wesemann and garden Manager ryan

houghton, to bring the project to completion. Funded by the U.S. Fish and wildlife Service’s partners for Fish and wildlife program, the restoration project greatly improves habitat among the Little river Aquatic habitat, a Significant natural heritage Area, and safeguards water quality for rare plants and invertebrates.

in addition to stewardship efforts, CMLC and Eagle’s nest Camp are seeking funding to enable a conservation easement on the land that is so central to teaching and inspiring its students and campers.

AMericorPs Project conservehonoring Martin Luther king jr. with day of Service

in celebration of Martin Luther king jr. day, AmeriCorps project Conserve members lent their hands among community projects in Buncombe and watauga Counties. Asheville area members made blankets for project Linus, created bandanas for local pet shelters, and made cards for Meals On wheels. Members also partnered with Asheville greenworks to plant dozens of fruit trees and erect a hoop house in Asheville’s pisgah View community.

in Boone, project Conserve members prepared meals for members of the community at FArM Café (Feed All regardless of Means). Members also visited Appalachian State University to hear Maya Angelou speak in honor of dr. king. Together across wnC, project Conserve increased community food security, promoted suitability, and enhanced our appreciation of diversity.

project Conserve members serve at 20 environmental non-profits across wnC promoting water quality, land conservation, local foods, and energy efficiency within their communities. CMLC has hosted this AmeriCorps program for eight years, providing more than 260,000 hours of public service to our region.

Yellow Lady Slipper Volunteer

clAire DillMAnwhen Claire first heard CMLC staff speak to her college class about protecting the region’s natural resources, she had no idea she would soon be so intimately acquainted with the flora, fauna, and topography of our beautiful mountains.

A senior Environmental Studies major at Brevard College, Claire completed her capstone internship in service to CMLC as an assistant to AmeriCorps hickory nut gorge (hng) Steward, david Lee. her internship—focused on invasive species inventory among more than 1,500 acres in the hng—led her on countless adventures of hiking off-trail, battling tangling kudzu and gnashing greenbrier, and climbing up perilously steep rockfaces. when asked what she learned as an intern, Claire replied, “to re-define impossible. Covering this terrain, i discovered the

amazing things you can do with your feet.”

working with david kept her service humorous and entertaining so that

“the things that should be awful became fun.” Claire gained valuable

skills in plant identification, gpS technology, and a greater knowledge of

the wilds of our region.

Originally from wahalla, SC, Claire is also a star collegiate tennis athlete and an accomplished whitewater guide on the Chattooga river. She strives to live by her grandfather’s motto, the Latin illegitimi non carborundum, which translates roughly as “don’t let ‘em grind you down.”

CMLC thanks Claire for her youthful, energetic service to our mission of conserving and stewarding our wnC mountains. we are honored to present Claire dillman with our Yellow Lady Slipper award.
