PREFACE The Center for the Management of Information Systems (CMIS) hopes you enjoy participating in the case competition. CMIS provides the following rules and guidelines to ensure a fair and equitable competition. We expect all participants to adhere to all rules and guidelines. Violation of the rules by any participant may result in disqualification of the entire team. For rule clarifications, please send your questions to CMIS at [email protected].
COMPETITION OVERVIEW
1. The competition begins when CMIS releases the business‐IT case on Thursday, April 13 at 10:00 AM. The case will be available on the CMIS website at http://mays.tamu.edu/center‐for‐the‐management‐of‐information‐systems/case‐competition/.
2. The release of the case marks the beginning of the case deliberation period. Each team will have 7 days to develop a “solution” to the problem(s) identified in the case.
3. The deliberation period ends when teams submit their softcopy deliverables on Thursday, April
20, 2017 by 9:00 AM (see additional details under Item #20 below). 4. At the end of the deliberation period, each team must submit a single PowerPoint file containing
their presentation slide deck (see Solution Deliverables section for details) to the CMIS email [email protected]. Please see #41 for file naming rules.
5. Each team will present its solution to a judging panel of faculty and business‐IT professionals.
Judges will score each team they see. 6. The April 21, 2017 competition has one division for graduate students. 7. Judging will take place in one round on Friday, April 21, 2017. Two winning teams will be
selected. 8. Winners will be announced at lunch at 11:45 AM in Wehner room 284. All team members should
be present for this event. 9. The judges’ scores will produce the CMIS Case Competition winners who receive prizes.
COMPETITION ELIGIBILITY 10. The graduate competition division is open to current students enrolled in the Master of Science
in Management Information Systems (MS‐MIS). Students must have completed the required communications course series provided by Veronica Stilley. Only three students allowed per team, maximum of eight teams. Participation is voluntary.

COMPETITION FORMAT 11. Students present their case analysis and recommendations to the judges at an assigned time in
an assigned room inside of Wehner. Power Point slides and an oral description of recommendations will be used to communicate to the judges. Each team member must speak during the presentation.
12. The judging panels will be comprised of information systems faculty, professionals from the CMIS advisory board companies and guests.
13. Each judging panel will select teams to win the competition from their competition room.
14. Teams will be asked questions by the judging panel during the Q&A session, and will also receive feedback from the judges’ notes the subsequent Monday following the competition.
Deliberation Period 15. The competition begins when CMIS releases the business‐IT case online on Thursday, April 13 at
10:00 AM.
16. Teams may not communicate (physically or electronically) about the case content or the topics of the case with any person outside of their immediate teammates at any time from when CMIS releases the case until after the competition ends.
17. Teams may use textbooks, published articles, notes from courses taken, professional books, magazines, library resources, internet search engines, corporate websites, etc. as resources to gather information to use in producing their solution to the case. However, teams may not use any of these resources to contact another person (other than their teammates) about the topics of the case or the content of the case. Further, teams may not use these resources to search for a previously published “solution” to the case.
18. The deliberation period ends on Thursday, April 20, 2017, no later than 9:00 AM, when teams must email a single PowerPoint file containing their presentation slide deck (see Solution Deliverables section below for additional details) to the CMIS office ([email protected]).
19. After submitting their deliverable, teams have approximately 24 hours to finalize their oral presentation for the competition. However, the teams will not be allowed to make any changes to the slide deck they submit.
Presentations 20. Presentations are Friday, April 21 from 9:00 AM to 11:15 AM.
21. Teams will make their presentations in a randomly assigned order with specific assigned start
time and classroom location.

22. All team members will report to Wehner 315 (CMIS Office Suite) to check in with the CMIS staff 10 minutes before their scheduled presentation time.
23. CMIS staff will post a complete list of presentation times and associated rooms to the CMIS
website on Thursday, April 13, 2017 after 11:00 AM as well as on the office door of Wehner 315.
24. No team may watch the presentation of any other team during competition presentations.
25. Each judging panel will select the top teams to advance to the finals round from among the teams they judge.
26. Team scores will be announced during the lunch provided at 11:45 AM on Friday, April 21 in Wehner room 284.
Presentation Guidelines
27. Each team receives 15 minutes to present their solution to the judging panel. The judges will then have 10 minutes to ask questions of the team members.
28. Time limits will be strictly enforced by the timekeeper in the room.
29. Each team member is required to speak during the team’s presentation.
30. Presentation rooms will have a computer, projector, projection screen, and a remote control “slide advancing” device (which includes a laser pointer). Students will not be permitted to use their own laptop computers.
31. To ensure file compatibility, teams must save all presentation materials in the .pptx file format only. No other formats will be approved.
32. The softcopy Power Point deliverable submitted by the team will be loaded on the computer in the presentation room. The electronic file submitted as softcopy deliverable are the only electronic resources that may be used by the team during their presentation.
33. Teams will not have internet access for their presentations.
34. Teams are required to check in with the CMIS staff in the CMIS Office (Wehner 315) 10 minutes prior to their assigned presentation time.
COMPETITION GUIDELINES 35. Each team member will receive a paper copy of the case materials from the CMIS office.
Communication about the case is permitted between team members only.
36. No questions regarding the case content will be entertained by the CMIS director or staff during the deliberation or presentation period.

Solution Deliverables Presentation Slide Deck
37. Each team must create a single presentation slide deck in .pptx file format only. The team will
use this set of slides for their Round 1 presentation.
38. Teams should prepare their slides using Windows‐based Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 or later (i.e., do not use Microsoft Office for Mac).
39. Teams are encouraged to design their own slide format and theme to demonstrate their individuality and creativity; however, teams should select standard or common fonts, formats, styles, etc. to avoid incompatibility issues during the presentation.
40. To assist the judges by providing reference points, slide numbers MUST be clearly visible on every slide.
41. Teams must adhere to these naming conventions for their file name: [Division]_[Room]_[Order]_[TeamName].pptx. Graduate students should use the two letter code “GR” to indicate their division. You will be given your presentation order and room number by CMIS when the case is released. For example, the filename would be “GR_339_3_XYZConsultants.pptx” for a graduate team named “XYZConsultants” presenting in Wehner 339 going 3rd.
Submitting Round 1 Deliverable
42. One member of the team must email the PowerPoint file to the CMIS office ([email protected]) by 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 20, 2017.
43. After the submission deadline has passed, no resubmissions will be allowed. Teams should ensure they have the most up‐to‐date copy of the team deliverable when submitting to the CMIS office. CMIS staff will verify that all deliverable files can be opened.
44. The CMIS staff will ensure that a copy of the team’s deliverable is on the presentation computer for the team to use.
Handouts for Judges (Hardcopy Deliverables)
45. Handouts for the judges are REQUIRED.
46. Teams should prepare handouts that includes the following ONLY: a. Cover sheet (include team name, division, order of presentation) b. Presentation slides (handout view with 6 slides per page)

47. Handouts must be bound with a single staple in the upper left corner (i.e., no folders, binders, plastic covers, etc.).
48. The judging panel has between 4 – 6 individual judges.
49. Each team should bring at least 6 copies of their handouts for the judges.
50. CMIS will retain one copy of your handouts.
51. Teams are responsible for ensuring that extra copies of their handouts are not left in the presentation rooms for other teams to obtain.
CASE COMPETITION PRIZES AND PARTICIPANT RECOGNITION
52. All finalists receive CMIS Case Competition goodies containing take‐away items from the CMIS corporate advisory board companies.
53. In addition to the above, competition winners will be awarded lunch and certificates.
CASE COMPETITION EVALUATION CRITERIA 54. The overarching guideline given to the judging panel is “Would I want to hire this group of
students to work for my company?”
55. Judges will mark a score sheet for each team. The judges will consider the specific criteria in four different categories identified in the following table:

MISCELLANEOUS
56. All case competition participants are expected to attend their regular classes during the deliberation period. Preparing for the competition is not considered an acceptable excuse for missing regularly scheduled classes.
57. CMIS will provide documentation for students who must miss a regularly scheduled class that conflicts with your assigned presentation time only of the competition.
58. Dress for the team presentations is business professional. Lunch attire is business casual.
59. Copies of feedback forms from judges will be provided to all teams on Monday, April 24 following
the competition. Individual students and teams should not expect the judges to provide detailed verbal feedback regarding their presentations.
