CMCC’s achievements this year demonstrate the

success of this approach in paving the way toward

increased collaboration with other health care

professions, and helping to define the profession

within the changing Canadian health care

landscape.

A message from the President and the Chair of the Board

The 2011–2012 fiscal year has presented CMCC with

several exciting opportunities with which to realize its

mission of delivering world class education, research and

patient care.

Working with health care and academic colleagues,

CMCC has increased opportunities for current and future

students, established programs that enhance patient

care, and fostered collaboration and research that may

influence the future of health care policy.

At a strategic level, one of the many ways we give our

graduates the tools they need to be competent, valued

members of the health care team is the establishment

of partnerships. Knowing that the whole is greater

than the sum of its parts, the right collaborations can

strengthen the capabilities of all participants. It was a

significant milestone for both CMCC and the University

of Ontario Institute of Technology when we reached an

academic articulation agreement to benefit students of

both institutions. This has been the beginning of a fruitful

relationship.

In the same spirit of collaboration and innovation that

inspires CMCC’s partnerships and growth, the biannual

research symposium provides a forum for sharing ideas

among researchers of diverse disciplines. The 2011

research symposium was no exception, and brought

together some of North America’s most respected

scientists to discuss their work as it related to cumulative

trauma injury.

Chiropractic research remains a vital focus for CMCC as

we strive to increase the scientific knowledge of the body

and to use this knowledge to continually inform practice,

offering our patients the utmost care and benefit from

chiropractic treatment. Just as importantly, we continue to

improve our understanding of health care dynamics and

contribute to health policy, ensuring that theory and best

practices can be translated into positive patient outcomes.

In another progressive step, a successful history with

Toronto's St. Michael’s Hospital blossomed into a

unique opportunity for our students and health policy

researchers, while tripling the chiropractic service

capacity within the hospital. The Academic Family Health

Team (AFHT) at St. Michael’s Hospital is the first AFHT

to include chiropractic and is an important facility for

research. It has been identified in the Health Innovation

Report issued by the Provincial Premiers’ Council of

the Federation as one of four primary care models for

provincial ministers to review as they implement reforms

to health care and delivery. Its inclusion reflects the high

level of commitment and collaboration which came

together in this model, and of which we can all be proud.

Throughout each of these notable events and many

more, chiropractic treatment at the CMCC clinics throughout

the GTA has continued to transform the lives of patients

and students. CMCC clinics have more than 77,000 patient

visits per year, treating a variety of patient populations and

offering care to those who would not otherwise have access.

Emanuel was referred to the chiropractic clinic at

St Michael’s Hospital by his physician following a

car accident that left him with pain and a severe

loss of range of motion in his neck and back.

Today, 20 chiropractic treatments later, he is

able to enjoy some of his favourite activities

again and manage flare ups with exercises

prescribed by his clinician-intern team.

He just returned from summer vacation.

“I never have to worry about them overdoing it

or not doing enough. I’ve been treated by two

interns through the program here and both have

been perfect.“

CMCC's clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital Increasing opportunities for patients and students

A new Family Health Team

In January, the newly expanded

chiropractic clinic at St. Michael’s

Hospital welcomed the first

group of chiropractic interns to

an innovative academic family

health team environment that

brings together physicians, nurses,

nurse practitioners, chiropractors,

psychologists, dieticians, social

workers, primary care pharmacists

and dentists.

It is the first such integrated model

to include chiropractic, making it

an important source of data on this

clinical model. Identified as ground

breaking in primary health care

delivery, the clinic was identified in

the recent Health Innovation Report

issued by the Provincial Premiers’

Council of the Federation for review

by provincial ministers as they

implement reforms to health care

and delivery.

Expanding chiropractic services

At the previous chiropractic

clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital,

Drs. Igor Steiman and Deborah

Kopansky-Giles divided their

time between patient treatment,

program evaluation, research and

education. The new model, which

now incorporates interns along

with residents, has the potential

to triple access to chiropractic care

within the hospital, while providing

clinical personnel with a unique

interprofessional experience.

The clinic's electronic medical

records system enables interns

to check patient histories which

aids in diagnosis. In an example

provided by Dr. Marco De Ciantus,

one of the initial interns at the

clinic, a patient was certain her

shoe had caused her fall. “When

I looked at her record, I could

see that she had had a stroke,

something that may not have been

so easily ascertained without the

records.” Dr. Sherry Carlton notes

that as the first group of interns

at the clinic, they worked through

a two month waiting list for care

during their internship.

Response to chiropractic

“It has been enlightening for

me as a family physician to

learn, appreciate and respect the

considerable knowledge of the

chiropractors and chiropractic

trainees at the clinic," says Dr.

Fok-Han Leung, Physician Lead at

80 Bond St. "This trust subtly but

definitively breaks down the walls

and barriers that have historically

impeded our professions from

working together. By appreciating

the importance of relationships,

we have created a culture where

we learn roles and scopes of

practice through formal, informal

and social means,” he adds. “Our

electronic records and our physical

space further encourage sharing

of information, sharing of care and

sharing of ideas.”

Pursuing progressive academic partnerships

Academic articulation

agreement with UOIT

Through a groundbreaking

collaborative agreement, CMCC

and the University of Ontario

Institute of Technology have come

together to create a new pathway

to chiropractic for students who

identify their career choice early

in their education. The CMCC-

UOIT pathway will enable qualified

students to complete a Bachelor of

Health Sciences (Honours) degree

in Kinesiology and a Doctor of

Chiropractic degree in seven years,

instead of the usual eight. This

agreement seamlessly bridges

a foundational degree into the

professional degree in chiropractic.

In addition to the clear advantage

to students in the program, each

institution will gain cross teaching

and research opportunities. The

agreement has already fostered

additional collaborative programs

and the future looks bright for

additional opportunities for

students of both institutions.

Mentoring students in health

management

CMCC has a formal role in the

Health Informatics Management

(HIM) program at UOIT. The HIM

program is designed as a field

placement where students can

demonstrate learning acquired

from the program through work

in a team or committee situation.

In 2011–2012, a UOIT student

participated in initial meetings

regarding CMCC’s implementation

of OSCAR, an electronic medical

records management program that

will be used to streamline patient

scheduling and records.

The evening of May 15, the debt I've accumulated, every cent,

was accounted for. That morning, I was called to make a life

changing decision. A 59 year old male neighbour awoke with

a feeling of not being co-ordinated, reporting that he had to

"really think" about moving his right upper and lower extremity.

As a close friend of my family, he agreed to let me conduct a

neurological exam. As I documented the findings, it became

clear the patient was exhibiting several cardinal signs of stroke.

I applied my chiropractic education to the situation, checking

vital signs and signature signs of stroke, while 911 was called.

Upon the paramedics’ arrival, I briefed them on my findings,

and sent a report of my findings with them to the hospital. The

patient underwent a CT scan within two hours.

In talking with the man’s son, I learned that the Emergency

Room Neurologist said that it was "thanks to the chiropractic

student next door," that the way I had responded, saved his life.

The story is bittersweet, as it affected a close family friend, but

it has a great ending. Shortly after his stroke we didn’t know if

the neurological signs were reversible. Today he is back to work

and has assumed all regular household responsibilities without

help. He reports his general health and wellness as great and

has just returned from a vacation in Jamaica!

It has all been worth it. Every minute of studying.... and I haven't

even gone into practice yet. A true testament to the quality of

education we receive at CMCC.

Showcasing chiropractic research,

sharing ideas

Experts from throughout North

America shared knowledge and

perspectives on topics ranging from

the biology of cumulative trauma

to the psychosocial components,

prevention strategies and disability

prevention at CMCC’s 2011 Research

Symposium.

Speakers included CMCC faculty,

adjunct faculty and guests and covered

a wide range of expertise. Many of

the presentations were based on

research still pending publication,

providing attendees with the most

current knowledge available among

research circles. The opportunity to

come together ignited collaborations

among the presenters and has

resulted in ongoing relationships

between CMCC faculty and guests.

CMCC used this venue to introduce

Dr. Sam Howarth, holder of the

McMorland Family Research Chair

in Mechanobiology, to the research

community.

Excellence in grants management

In February 2012, CMCC received

written notification that its

recent submission to the National

Institutes of Health was in the top

seven per cent of all submissions

received and reviewed from

researchers across North America.

CMCC submitted over 16 grant

proposals valued at more than $2

million for 2011–2012 and by May

31, had been awarded $645,000.

A further award of $960,434

was received subsequent to year

end for a total of more than $1.6

million.

Advancing chiropractic through science

In 2011–12, CMCC researchers were involved in projects with researchers in the United States at Columbia University, the University of Vermont, New York Chiropractic College, National University of Health Sciences, the University of North Texas and Fudan University in Shanghai, China.

Collaborative relationships continue with researchers at McMaster University and University of Guelph, in Ontario, Palmer College of Chiropractic (Davenport), University of Miami, University of Rochester and Rush Medical College (Chicago) in the United States and Newcastle University in Australia.

Mali has suffered from headaches for the past 20 years and reached the point where she had to take multiple medications several times per day to manage her symptoms but did not experience the relief she expected. Since visiting the clinic at Sherbourne, she reports her symptoms have decreased significantly. She has returned to gardening and can enjoy her retirement.

After a stroke at age 77, Patsy had difficulty getting out of the house on her own. She

began coming to Sherbourne two years ago to increase the strength in her affected side.

Her arm is stronger now and treatment has improved her walking.

Engaging experts through

CMCC's Visiting Scholar Program

CMCC exposes its students to high

calibre scholars to facilitate their

understanding and application of

knowledge into clinical practice.

In 2011–2012, CMCC hosted Dr.

Simon Dagenais, Chief Scientific

Officer of Palladian Health in New

York and Dr. Steven Passmore, who

holds the Canadian Chiropractic

Research Foundation Professorship

in Spine Biomechanics and Human

Neurophysiology at the University of

Manitoba.

Bringing CMCC care to

the community

CMCC Year IV students provided

treatment to participants of more

than 12 community events and

presented on health care topics

to as many groups during CMCC’s

regular community outreach

program. In a new arrangement

in 2011, CMCC Clinician Dr. Jarrod

Goldin and members of his intern

group committed their own time to

provide a successful regular exercise

class to seniors at Toronto’s Tri-

Congregational Church. Program

administrator, Margaret Black calls

the program “the best we’ve ever

had.”

Providing care to underserved

populations abroad

Plans were made for CMCC’s first

independent Outreach Abroad to

Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic

(DR). Following two successful

outreaches facilitated by Chiropractic

Without Borders, CMCC sought to

create an independent outreach to

enable students and citizens of the DR

to continue to reap the benefit of the

exchange, even though government

funding was no longer available.

Extending learning

opportunities to

interprofessional groups

through CE

In May, the Division of Continuing

Education finalized an agreement

with the Canadian Dental Hygienists

Association to deliver a series

of webinars to its members

about preventing and managing

musculoskeletal injury.

Through 2011–2012, the division

established working relationships

with National University of Health

Sciences and Texas Chiropractic

College for CMCC faculty member

Dr. Brian Budgell to speak in Illinois,

Florida and Texas about relieving the

burden of somatovisceral disorders.

Also this year, the division

collaborated with the University

of Toronto, York University/

Seneca and the Canadian Society

of Chiropractic Educators to plan,

develop and deploy an extensive

new educational program on the

subject of Independent Assessment

in Ontario.

Growing the Community

Based Clinical Education

Program

There has been continued growth

within the community based clinical

education program, increasingly

popular with interns and practicing

chiropractors. This year 11 students


participated in the program. CMCC

has received 17 new requests from

CMCC members to be added to the

CBCEP faculty roster.

Supporting Canada’s elite

athletes

Three CMCC clinicians were afforded

the honour of treating participating

Canadian athletic team members.

Recognition by some of the world’s

best athletes attests to the calibre

of CMCC’s clinical faculty.

Providing opportunities

for interprofessional

education

CMCC continues to be involved in

opportunities for students from a

variety of health care disciplines

to come together through joint

learning experiences. A session

based on conflict resolution was

organized in February at the

University of Toronto involving

students from the Faculty of

Medicine and the Leslie Dan Faculty

of Pharmacy.

CMCC and the Family Practice Unit

of North York General Hospital

have continued an interprofessional

relationship in which family practice

residents can choose to observe

chiropractic treatment at the

Campus Clinic and to attend rounds

presentation.

Celebrating the successful

completion of CMCC's

Simulation Laboratory

CMCC celebrated the completion

of its Simulation Laboratory, an

occasion for which The Honourable

Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for

the Science and Technology and for

the Federal Economic Development

Agency for Southern Ontario, was in

attendance.

CMCC was one of six private

institutions to receive federal

funding through the Knowledge

Infrastructure Program. The grant

contributed to the Simulation

Laboratory which includes a Clinical

Diagnosis Simulation Laboratory,

a Treatment Skills Development

Laboratory and a new high tech

audiovisual environment in which

to conduct history, physical and

diagnosis exercises. The grant

also contributed to enhancements

to CMCC’s Biomechanics Laboratory.

Establishing an integrated

clinical practice course for

Year III students

A new course was developed

to mirror clinical situations to

prepare Year III students for their

internships. The process will stress

interactive critical thinking, clinical

decision skills reflective of the

student’s future place within the

health care continuum.

Enhancing the skills of our

educators

This year CMCC initiated an in-

house teacher education program

to enhance the learning/teaching

experience of educators and

students. The program has

attracted participants from both

CMCC and the wider health care

community.


Changing livesEvery day, patients' lives are transformed through the reduction of pain, increased mobility and strength, as our students master the skills they need to follow their dreams.

Yu Rong is a Parkinson’s patient whose balance is improved through chiropractic. Improved balance gives her increased freedom and means that she does not always need her cane.

Shirley has been receiving treatment for a painful shoulder condition for which her MD was at a loss to help. She remembered the chiropractors at Sherbourne from a previous injury, and returned with great results.

Treatment has given Barrington more independence. He is stronger and more able to pick up items such as groceries and reach the elevator button for his floor. His pain has decreased so he can sleep at night.

Jessie battles severe back pain, which at times has left her bedridden. With treatment she has resumed an active lifestyle. She recently cycled 600 km from Toronto to Montreal in the Friends for Life Bike Rally.

“After all the care I have been given,” says Linda, “I

am better than I ever was."

Linda suffered from complex regional pain syndrome

in her foot, making it impossible for her to spend

long hours standing, a requirement of her job as

a high school teacher. Struggling to recover while

relying on Wheel Trans, crutches, acupuncture and

intensive physiotherapy, Linda was unable to return

to work full time and lost her insurance coverage

for physiotherapy. With finances already tight,

she sought treatment at the chiropractic clinic at

Sherbourne Health Centre.

The chiropractors at Sherbourne helped Linda to

understand her condition, enabling her to take

a more active role in her own care and their

communication with her MD has aided her ability

to fine tune any medical treatments. Today, with

the collaborative health care team that includes her

MD and her clinician-intern team at Sherbourne, she

has been able to return to work and continues to

improve.

much more for myself. I am much more proactive

and here (at Sherbourne), there is always follow up.

People ask me, ‘How did it go, today?’ I’ve never had

this kind of care in all my years. Every single intern

has been superior and I can also always get help

right away, even if my own intern is not available. I

love the flexibility here.”

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic

College (CMCC) is once again proud

of its solid financial performance over

the past year. With continued attention

to prudent fiscal management, CMCC

completed the year ending May 31,

2012 with an excess of revenues over

expenditures in the General Fund of

$286,9541 and a strong cash position.

Prudent fiscal management

CMCC used the excess of revenue

over expenditures generated in 20122,

along with net Hands on the Future®

Capital Campaign proceeds, to support

the repayment of its long term debt,

$2.8 million3 of the principal on the loan

and mortgage was repaid this past

year. Since incurring this long term debt

in 2004, CMCC has reduced the principal

owing by an accumulated $14.3 million

of the $22 million borrowed—reflecting

a rate of repayment to date that has

substantially exceeded expectations.

This accelerated debt repayment is the

result of prudent financial management

and continuing support from donors

over the years. The benefits of this

strategy continue to strengthen CMCC’s

sound financial position by reducing

the related carrying charges. Since

2004, the accelerated debt repayments

have reduced interest otherwise

payable by a total of over $485,000.

Net proceeds to the Capital Campaign

are committed to retiring loan

and mortgage debt related to the

construction of the 6100 Leslie

Street campus. In 2012, campaign

contributions grew by $213,0954 and

total pledges toward the campaign

stand at over $19.5 million.

Investments of $3.8 million (fair valued

as at May 31, 2012), are composed of

restricted funds and an internal general

purpose fund which receives quarterly

additions. The investment fund

performed relatively well over the past

fiscal period, though it was negatively

impacted by the adverse economic

conditions. Investments are governed

by a Board approved policy wherein a

risk balanced strategy is professionally

managed to the objectives of

preserving the capital’s purchasing

power, providing appropriate liquidity

and generating long term capital

growth. During this past fiscal year,

the second year of the established

McMorland Family Research Chair in

Mechanobiology which focuses on

spine instability, degeneration and joint

dysfunction/subluxation, $56,609 in

donations were received. Together with

the founding donation of $500,000

from Mrs. Barbara McMorland, over

$674,000 has been pledged toward

CMCC’s goal of $3.5 million to fully

fund this dynamic research initiative to

improve patients’ health and well being.

Revenue and expense flows

The Doctor of Chiropractic program

represents CMCC's largest offering,

and thus it is no surprise that student

and tuition fees continue to reflect

the largest source of revenue. During

the past fiscal year, this category

represented 75.8% (74.0% last year)

of the overall gross operating

revenue,5,6 with a full student

complement. Research activities

continued robustly on new grants

and those previously awarded.

Diversification of revenue streams

continues to be a CMCC priority. The

institution experienced relatively

higher non-tuition based revenue

from the contributions of clinic fees,

donations, parking fees, and research

activities while experiencing relatively

lower non-tuition based revenue

from continuing education programs,

investment income, membership fees,

and the Supply Centre and Bookstore.

Overall operating expenditures,

though higher in dollar terms,

were proportionately consistent

with the prior year with relatively


higher expenses in Other5 (related

to continuing education program,

cafeteria and Supply Centre and

Bookstore operating costs), and

relatively lower expenses for Interest

and bank charges and for repairs

and maintenance. The activity levels

reflect an actively evolving institution,

and inflationary cost increases.

Continued prudent budget

management was exercised by all

divisions, recognizing the value for

money relationship to expenditures

in the delivery of world class services

to support patient focused chiropractic

education, research and health care.

A moment of reflection

CMCC’s financial position remains

strong and stable, supporting and

enriching academics, research

and health care clinics. The institution's

continuing success is the result of

the strong dedication, energy, and

support of faculty, staff, students,

members, donors and volunteers.

These remarkable individuals

enthusiastically help CMCC to realize

its mission and vision every day. CMCC

continues to have much to be proud

of — a remarkable and respected

history and an even brighter future.
