yourmotorstoyourcontraptions.TheclutchIhavedesignedtakesreferencefromaconeclutchdesign–imagesdetailingthiswillbeincludedlaterinthedocument.
Thisclutchunitwouldbeusedinadrivetrain.Oneside(theinput)willbeyourmotionfromyourmotorsandtheotherside(theoutput)willgotoanycontraptionyouwanttopower.Withthisdesign,amotor,servoorotherwouldbeabletorotateoneofthetwoshaftstoengageordisengagetheclutch.Whentheclutchisengaged,themotionfromyourmotorscancomeinononesideandgoouttheotherside.However,whentheclutchisdisengagedthemotionfromthemotorsisnotabletotransferthroughtheclutchtotheoutput,enablingtheoutputsidetospinfreely.
Myclutchcouldbeusedinmanyways,bothaspartofprototypefortestingandpartofacompleterobotdesign.Oneexampleforeitherusewouldbeagearbox,allowingyoutodisengagethegears
fromyourmotor,meaningyoucanuseonemotorselectivelyformultiplejobs.Thiscouldenableyoutoswapyourgearratiostochangethepurposeofthemotorquickly,freeingupthenumberofmotorsyoucanuse.Anotherexamplecouldbeacatapulttriggermechanismsoyoucandisengagethemotorstoenablethestringdrumtospinfreelywithoutthemotorsslowingitdown.

§ CoilTool.ThiswasusedtocreatethespringandthenusingDrivenConstraintstocontractandexpandthespring
§ MirrorCommand.Thiscommand(withRemoveOriginalenabled)wasusedtocreatethesecondsideoftheoutercasing
§ RectanglePatternTool.Thiswasusedtocopyidenticalfeaturestodifferentplacesonthepart(e.g.thescrewholesontheoutercasing)
ThemaindifficultyIhadwiththisprojectwasnottheclutchitself,butratherthetriggermechanism.Iovercamethisissuebyresearchingrealclutchdesignsandusingthemaguidetocreateasimpleandcompacttriggermechanism.TheissuesthatIfacedwiththisproblemcausedmetoconsidermultipledesignsbeforeIreachedmyfinalproduct.
Ilearnedmanythingsintheprocessofdesigningthispart,fromadesign,engineering,andcompetitionperspective.IexpandedmyexistingknowledgeofCADwiththingslikehowDrivenDimensionsareused,andimprovedmygeneralefficiencywithusingAutodeskinventor.Idiscoveredthedetailsoftheinnerworkingsofaclutch,andthathavingtheabilitytouseonemotorformultipletasksisusefulincompetitionduetothemotornumberrestrcitions.AutodeskInventorhelpsmyschoolsRoboticsteambyhelpingussavetime,aswealwaysdesignourrobotonAutodeskInventorfirstbeforewebuildit.Thismeanswebuilditonceandwebuilditright.IwillcontinuetouseAutodeskInventorinthefuturebecauseitissomethingIreallyenjoyworkingwithandon,andonedayIhopetohaveacareerasaDesignEngineer.
