Message from the Registrar Dear Aspirant,

I have been fortunate to associate myself with the University as

Registrar from the early days of its incubation. We have envisaged

Cluster University of Jammu to steadily grow into a multi disciplinary

institute. The prime focus of our university would be our students. We

will work hard to make them capable, responsible citizens through best

quality education and strong value system.

In Cluster University of Jammu, we will be focusing on our

constituent colleges and newly created P.G. Schools, so that we can

offer very useful programmes to the students and professionals. The

University believes in providing quality education by using technology

with high academic standards. We have excellent team members in our colleges to support the students in order to

provide best education. Our earnest is not to offer any programme just as an added qualification or degree but to support

the students to be successful in their life and profession. We will be designing our programmes very carefully with the

professional and renowned educationists in order to maintain the quality and global standards. In addition to normal

courses being run in the constituent colleges, we will be offering affordable honours courses at the door steps of the

students so that they can be benefitted in their academic pursuits. Besides this we are offering five year integrated

programmes in our newly created Schools of University.

I am fully aware that there exists an ample scope for us to enhance our standards to reach higher pinnacles of academic

excellence. I am sure we would be able to achieve our objectives with cooperation of learned and experienced faculty

members devoted to the overall development of students personality.

I want to assure the students that their life in the campus as student would be highly rewarded in terms of academic

pursuit and filled with good human values. It is an exciting journey and I look forward to challenges, it brings as the

accomplishments will give me great pride and satisfaction.

Best Wishes

Jatinder Khajuria

Govt. Gandhi Memorial Science College,

Canal Road, Jammu ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Govt. Gandhi Memorial Science College Jammu, known in common

parlance as Science College, stands today the tallest among the Degree

Colleges in the state both historically and academically, and enjoys the

distinction of being the only Heritage College in Jammu Division and also

the Lead College of Cluster University of Jammu. The grandeur of its

monumental buildings is an epitome of engineering feat that personifies its

purpose to chisel out the best.

The college came into being in1905 as ‘Prince of Wales College’ when His

Highness Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh announced the opening of this

educational institution. Although the foundation stone of this college was laid in July 1904 by the then Resident of Kashmir Sir Francis

Young Husband, amidst a vast lush green area of about 65 acres to form its campus, this fledgling took off under the leadership of Prof R. N.

Mukherjee as officiating Principal with an inaugural batch of 26 students on roll in 1907. The college has come a long way since then

fulfilling the academic aspirations of students and contributing actively its literati share to knowledge pool of the nation while upholding the

essence of traditions and nurturing the moral values.

The Prince of Wales College was affiliated to Punjab University Lahore in May 1908. Initially a stream of subjects namely English,

Mathematics, Chemistry, History, Persian, Sanskrit and Philosophy were taught up to the Intermediate state. In January 1910, Geology and

Arabic subjects were introduced and gradually most of the courses were upgraded to the graduation level. The college was shifted to its

present location on 18th September 1912 with Prof. S. Robson as the Principal. By virtue of it having probably the best infrastructure in the

whole of Northern India, the college attracted scholars and teachers of repute and stature as its faculty members and hence the college

excelled academically. The doyen of Indian Geology Dr. D. N. Wadia established the Department of Geology in 1930. Its departmental

museum, with its rich and rare collection, continues to be one of the best museums of Geology in the whole of Northern India.

From 1931 onwards the college admitted both male and female students on its rolls till 1944, when a separate Maharani Mahila College was

opened in the Present Luthra Academy at Kachi Chawni. However, in medical stream, female students continued to be on the rolls till as late

as 1966. In recent years, with the introduction of subjects like Electronics, Computer Applications, Functional English, BCA and

Postgraduate courses in Geology and English the college has once again started admitting female students. The college continued to

expand and in 1940 Sh. K. G. Sayaiden, the then Director of Education inaugurated an independent Library block. Around the same time, the

Arts Block came up and subsequently departments of Bio-Sciences and Geography were also added.

The undercurrent of patriotism and acknowledgement of the efforts of the Father of the Nation, led to renaming of the Prince of Wales

College to Govt. Gandhi Memorial College on 20th May 1948.

With the changing perspective of the students and the teachers, the focus of this college is turning to foster global competencies among the

students by enriching the academic milieu and through introduction of market oriented integrated UG and PG programmes. Our resolve of

carving out a niche at national level stands vindicated. In recognition of its contributions to academics over more than 100 years, and based on

the evaluation of quality parameters, this college has earned yet another distinction in its NIRF ranking by MHRD, Govt of India and has

been ranked at 151 – 200 band of colleges among the Degree Colleges of India. The present administration of the college shall ensure the

preservation of what already exists and continue to keep marching in pursuit of excellence, to be counted among the comity of world class

institutions of higher learning, so is envisioned.
