Don was born and raised in Lehighton, Pa. He comes from a close knit family that I

includes 2 brothers and 1 sister. Growing up, Don spent many summer holidays

vacationing with both his immediate and extended family members on trips to local

attractions, and they still maintain a close bond to this day. While in school, Don focused

on a business curriculum and his hobbies included playing baseball and football. During

this time, he met his high school sweetheart, Catherine, who married several years later.

Catherine and Don have four children and one grandchild. Don’s has an extensive career

background in the Human Services industry and he holds a Bachelor’s degree in

Elementary Education. He has played an active role in his children’s extra curricular

activities, serving as a treasurer for the football association and president for both the

cheerleading and softball associations as well. Don began working at Clubhouse in

March 2017, and he enjoys socializing with the members and the Clubhouse philosophy.

He is committed to building relationships with both members and staff. Kudos to you

Don, we are glad to have you!

May 2017

When I think of May, I think of Spring with all its newness and rebirth. I look at the flowers as they begin to bloom. I wake up to birds chirping outside my window. I see what we are doing here at Clubhouse and I feel the new energy surging. We have wonderful plans for this month and upcoming months. We ended April with our annual Wellness Day that gets better by the year. On May 12 we have our annual Get the Scoop on Mental Illness Walk. We go from here to the Ritz where we scoop and distribute free ice cream to those who pass by and offer them information to help dispel the many myths and fears of mental illness. This year, Magellan has added another incentive to come and to participate. They will be providing free hot dogs, hamburgers and salads to all those who join us...YAY At the end of May we travel one more time out to State College for the annual PA Clubhouse Coalition conference. This always proves to be a fun learning and sharing experience. We are already thinking about our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser in June too. Each month we always plan fun activities for our Thursdays and Saturdays. WE want our members to enjoy each other’s company and to have time to relax. The calendar is a group effort. Staff does not want to decide what you consider fun. We need your attendance at the meetings or at least your input. You can call Janet Koch or see her when you come in. Come in and see the changes. We even painted a few walls! Hope to see you soon.

UNIT NEWS AND MEMBER UPDATES

HELPING OUR COMMUNITY

HEALTH AND WELLNESS UNIT

(First Floor):

April was a busy month that saw many

changes. Members have enjoyed having

access to the computers on the first floor.

Wellness Day was a great success. We had

Empire Beauty School doing haircuts,

makeup and nails. We also enjoyed visits

from the therapy dogs and therapy pig. We

are excited for our next event, which is “Get

the Scoop on Mental Health”, on May 12th,

from 1:30-3:30pm. Please come out and join

us for this great event!

SERVICES UNIT (Second Floor):

Stop by and look at the newly painted

accent walls that prove to uplift your

spirits as you enter the unit!

Transformation is constant as we are now

working on the new Service Unit logo that

will represent who we are and what we do

in our unit. This logo will be displayed on

our Community Wall. As we all become

more familiar with each other, and we all

work together to accomplish the great

ideas that are flowing, our unit is abuzz

just in time for Spring! We will

continue to accept and implement ideas as

the month moves along. Our next Unit

Project will be updating the power point

presentation for Orientation. We will need

your input, ideas, and help as we continue

to transform our Unit! As said before...we

are THE TRANSFORMERS!

Do you want to join the “Recycling

With Janet Team”?

It’s easy. Every Tuesday or maybe every

other Tuesday depending on the weather

and amount of recycling, Janet K. is the

team member to count on to get the job

done along with YOU, the member of her

team who will head on down to The

Allentown Recycling Drop-Off Center which is located on Martin Luther King

Jr. Dr. next to the 15th Street Bridge

(below the YMCA). Taking our van to

the site and recycling our recyclable

papers and trash so will make a

difference in the lives of our

children and our grandchildren, their

future and the future of our planet

depends on us.

Contact Janet to be that team member!

Twenty Keys To A Happy Life By Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

1. Compliment three people every day.

2. Watch a sunrise.

3. Be the first one to say “Hello.”

4. Live beneath your means.

5. Treat everyone as you want to be treated.

6. Never give up on anybody, miracles happen.

7. Forget the Joneses.

8. Remember someone’s name.

9. Pray not for things but for wisdom and courage.

10. Be tough-minded but tender-hearted.

11. Be kinder than you would have to be.

12. Don’t forget that a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.

13. Keep your promises.

14. Learn to show cheerfulness even when you don’t feel like it.

15. Remember that overnight success usually takes about fifteen years!

16. Leave everything better than you found it.

17. Remember that winners do what losers don’t want to do.

18. When you arrive at your job in the morning let the first thing you say brighten everyone’s day.

19. Don’t rain or other people’s parades.

20. Don’t waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

STANDARD OF THE MONTH The International Standards for Clubhouse Programs,

consensually agreed upon by the Worldwide Clubhouse

Community, define the Clubhouse Model of Rehabilitation.

The Standards also serve as a “bill of rights” for members and a code

of ethics for staff, board, and administrators.

The Standards insist that a Clubhouse is a place that offers

respect and opportunity to its members.

Membership

STANDARD #6 Members have a right to immediate re-entry into the Clubhouse community after any length of absence,

unless their return poses a threat to the Clubhouse community.

Member Update:

We are pleased to

welcome returning

member Matthew T

and new members Sue

What Does It Mean? By: Diane W.

When you have become a new member into the clubhouse you are a member for life and no matter how

long you have taken leave from clubhouse you can return any time you wish.

Wellness Day Review

Another successful Wellness Day is

under our belt (hopefully a looser fitting

belt thanks to our Wellness Day tips!).

Highlights of the day included: pet

therapy (always a favorite),

mini-makeovers courtesy of Empire

Beauty school, massages, reiki and

shiatzu demonstrations, healthy food

samples and recipes, and much more!

We had a great turnout which included

community members, local human

service agencies, and of course

members and staff. Many thanks to the

vendors that volunteered their time and

expertise, as well as staff and member

involvement. Thumbs up!
