UPCOMING EVENTSAugust 2014
July has been a wonderful month at the club, starting with a fantastic Fourth of July celebration. The month ended with our annual Lake Toxaway Charities event, which netted a record-setting $140,000 to be donated to worthy causes throughout Transylvania County. I am reminded what a blessing it is to be part of such a generous community here in Lake Toxaway. Read more about this event on page 12.
August will be a busy month on the golf course, with our Men’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament on August 7-9 and several other great golf events for both men and ladies. The Mallet Club will host their club championships later in the month, and we will wrap up August with our 2014 Lake Toxaway Patriot Weekend to honor our veterans and support the Folds of Honor Foundation. See below for the schedule of events. This year, you can sign up for all events and make donations using a single Sponsor/Donor/Registration Form, which is available online at laketoxawaycc.com/patriotweekend. Please return this form and all payments directly to Alex Alexander. With so much going on, August will certainly be exciting. I look forward to seeing you at the club.

From Our Golf Pro...
July was a great month, not only for the weather, but for some good golf. We started off with the Parent-Child Tournament on July 4. The winners in each age groups were: Michael and Henry Brown (ages 10 and under), Ricky and Rick Weathers (ages 11 to 14), and Lance Kimmey (ages 15 and up).
The ladies had a great turnout and a lot of fun at their annual Member-Guest Tournament on July 15. The winners in the gross division were the team of Sue Fazio and her guest Meredith Powell, and Timmie Bobo and her guest Joyce Pepin. In the net division, the winners were Carol Anderson, Susan Martin, Sandy Dillon, and Lynne Sneed. We also saw some personal accomplishments with Paige Powell shooting her career round with an 89.
Joe Buttigieg and Connie Leppard both made a Hole in One this month. Joe’s was on hole #13, while Connie’s came on hole #5. CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!!
Another reminder about the alarm system for lightning: when the siren puts out one long blast, you need to seek shelter immediately. We have noticed players staying on the course despite the warning. When you hear three short blasts, this means it is all clear and you are able to resume play. Most lightning strikes happen when the sun is present. Please OBSERVE THE SYSTEM, as it is only for your sake and safety.
There have been some billing issues lately. To help avoid these issues, we ask you to let the golf shop staff know if you are planning on playing 9 or 18 holes and who will be playing in your group. If these plans change, please notify the shop. THANK YOU!!
August is filled with a number of special events; see the schedule to the right for dates and times. Come out and join the fun.

Golf Course Superintendent Update
GreensThe greens have held up well through the end of July as we have had no trouble with the turf health regardless of how aggressively we have maintained the surface. Untimely rain prevented our ability to do the ¼” core aeration that I previously discussed, so we just used some solid tines to open the greens up and let them breathe a little. This is necessary once we get midway through the season to help release gasses from the soil profile and allow water and air to reach the root system. Over time, the accumulation of grass clippings, fertilizer, and chemical applications can cause the surface to seal off and prevent these important processes from taking place. Simply creating a small hole can make all the difference in the health of the turf. We will now wait until our scheduled aeration in early September.
FairwaysWe also were able to perform a process called “slicing” on the fairways. This consists of using a machine to slice a 4” long slit roughly 2 inches deep in the surface of the fairway with no disruption to the playing surface. We are seeking similar results as with using the solid tines on the greens in that we want to promote air and water infiltration. We will try to do this several times throughout the year to supplement the necessary core aeration in the off-season. I placed a cross section of one of our fairways at the desk of the pro shop for you to see. This is a good example of what we are dealing with from a thatch standpoint and shows why our fairways are so soft and spongy and in need of aeration and topdressing.
Roughs
The Bluegrass rough has been a challenge so far this year. It is severely contaminated with Bentgrass and Poa, which is typical of this grass variety. The lack of aeration has left it very susceptible to diseases such as summer patch that weaken the turf and aid in the
GOLF
overall contamination. We are currently looking into other options to interseed with to make the rough more tolerant to conditions.
We recently implemented some natural posts as entry and exit points for the golf carts on each hole. This concept is designed for the carts to enter each fairway next to the first post and remain on the fairway through the approach shots to the green before exiting the fairway next to the second post. This will help our maintenance staff control the cart traffic each day and direct it to the areas that we would like depending on turf wear or wet areas. These posts will be moved each day to help limit the wear to the turf. Please do not hesitate to email or call me with any questions or suggestions: [email protected] or (828) 966-9613

was the story of the impact of the German submarine attacks up and down our east coast during WWII. Thank you Nancy. This month FWF is August 11 and our presenter is again one of our own. Steve Rogers is fascinating us with his account of traversing the English Channel. Make your reservations soon because it will be sold out.
We need to thank Bill Minnich for taking charge of the Lake Toxaway Charities tournament which was well attended and loads of fun. The Monday W&W following this weekend included a Chicken & Corn Cookout and we had over 80 diners. Many kudos to Les Avera, Gene Bishop, and LTCC for putting this one together for us. It was confirmed that CROQUETNUTS can consume a lot of food. Croquet is definitely a more strenuous sport than most realize.
Croquet Update...
Hello CROQUETNUTS! What a July we have had! Most importantly, we did not get completely washed out this year by rain. The attendance for July Wine & Wickets events has been spectacular. We had more than 65 players for our W&W on July 7, and are now hoping to break that record.
Feast with Friends continues to be a terrific and sold out dinner. This month we were blessed with a presentation from our own Nancy Avera, the master story teller. She recounted “The Homefront” anthology that she received a grant to compile. It

We also have the American Rules Doubles Tournament with details to follow. Any questions can be directed to George Bagwell, our illustrious leader and ranked AR singles player.
Things do not slow down after August. The annual USCA-sanctioned Lake Toxaway Golf Croquet Tournament will be held this year on September 18-20. Water: It Does a Body Good!.
Water is absolutely essential to the human body’s survival. A person can live for about a month without food, but only about a week without water. Approximately 70% of the body is made up of water, so it is necessary to drink around 8-10 glasses of water per day or approximately half your body weight in ounces. For a 130 pound women, that would be 65 ounces and for a 200 pound man, 100 ounces. The amount you drink should also be increased if you exercise intensely and especially when you are outdoors being active in hot, humid weather.
While the daily recommended amount of water is eight cups per day, not all of this water must be consumed in the liquid form. Nearly every food or drink item provides some water to the body. Soft drinks, coffee, and tea, while made up almost entirely of water, also contain caffeine, which can act as a mild diuretic decreasing your level of hydration.
Drinking too much water too quickly can lead to water intoxication. Water intoxication occurs when water dilutes the sodium level in the bloodstream and causes an imbalance of water in the brain. Water intoxication is most likely to occur during periods of intense athletic performance.
You lose water throughout the day—through your breath, sweat, urine, and bowel movements. If you live in a hot climate, you lose even more fluid. You need to replace this lost fluid to stay healthy. If you do not drink enough water you may experience headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, trouble with weight loss and skin problems. Additionally, without an adequate water intake the kidneys and bowels can be negatively impacted through constipation and an increased risk of kidney stones. If you get very dehydrated, your body no longer has enough fluid to get blood to your organs and this can be dangerous.
Unfortunately, thirst isn’t always a reliable gauge of the body’s need for water, especially in children and older adults. A better indicator is the color of

your urine: Clear or light-colored urine means you’re well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration.
Still need reasons to drink up? Water is vital for regulating the body’s cooling system, aids in digestion, helps in absorption of nutrients, and assists with chemical processes that take place at a cellular level. Staying hydrated helps to maintain a healthy body weight by increasing metabolism and regulating appetite. One of the most common causes of daytime fatigue is actually mild dehydration, so drinking sufficient amounts of water will help you stay energized throughout the day and keep your brain healthy. Water naturally moisturizes skin and ensures proper cellular formation underneath layers of skin to give it a healthy, glowing appearance. Water acts as a natural lubricant for joints and tissues and keeps the body supple. For a majority of those who suffer from joint and/or back pain, drinking water can significantly reduce the pain. Water assists with nearly all body functions, so drink to your health!

House Committee Update...
The House Committee continues their work to enhance the club’s dining rooms. Thanks to Harrie Crowley’s expertise and Hank Schuyler’s assistance, the backordered wall sconces were installed in the Main Dining Room on July 16. Keith Rider in our maintenance department finished installing new lighting on July 17 that will highlight Bob Coley’s artwork over the mantel.
The sports-themed wall decor in the Toxaway Room is now complete. The committee wishes to thank Larry and Donna Bradner for the gift of the golf prints and the walking stick.

This year’s Lake Toxaway Charities Day was a big day! The day’s activities raised over $140,000, which sets a record by 25%! These funds will go to 30 agencies in Transylvania County that support health care, food and shelter, and education.
It was wonderful to see the Lake Toxaway community come together to give back. More than 200 members attended the dinner/dance, and the committee is thankful for everyone’s support.
It took more than 80 volunteers over the course of the year to make this event happen. Jeannette and Hank Schuyler provided the decorations that turned the clubhouse into a little piece of Tuscany. The cash bar was manned by our famous bartenders Bill Nolan, Hank Schuyler, and Rick Guthy. Kenny Lovett set up the tennis event with local pros, Bill Minnich coordinated 32 croquet players, and Bruce Young was in charge of the golf event, along with Lou Biago and the golf staff. Thanks to LTCC for hosting the event across all the venues, to Chef Mike and his staff for the Italian food preparation, to Chris Cooper and his waitstaff for their great service, and to Erin Schlegel for an excellent job of coordinating everything.
If you are interested in volunteering next year, please contact Chip Brown at (704) 560-3175.

From our Dining Manager...
Greeting from the Dining Room! July has been filled with great events and wonderful dinners. As July comes to a close and the month of August approaches, please remember to make your reservations for dining at the club, especially on Thursdays and Fridays as tables do fill quickly on these nights. Also please be sure to check the dress code policy for the different evenings that we offer dining at the club.
Stop by the 19th Hole to try some of our signature cocktails and outstanding bar menu. The 19th Hole is open daily from 11:30am to 6:30pm, and the bar menu is available from 2:30pm until 6:30pm. The bar also now offers cappuccino and espresso drinks.
I would like to officially introduce our dining manager, Shane Ahrens, who is heading the dinner service this season in the Lakeside Dining Room at the Greystone Inn. Shane started his food and beverage career as a 13-year-old dishwasher and quickly moved into the dining room, working his way from
busboy and server at the Peninsula Club in Cornelius to dining manager at The Point Lake and Golf Club in Mooresville. He most recently served as the clubhouse manager for Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines. Shane has been married to his wife, Shannon, for 9 years, and they have three children. Be sure to say hello to Shane the next time you visit the Lakeside Dining Room.
If you haven’t been to the Lakeside Dining Room lately, I encourage you to go enjoy a great dining experience in the warm ambiance and beautiful view of Lake Toxaway. Chef Mike and his culinary staff have created a wonderful four-course menu that is definitely a treat. Also ask your server about our new French press coffee, which offers a signature blend of coffee beans that steep right at your table. Please note that advanced reservations are required for both breakfast and dinner; call the Greystone Inn’s front desk at (828) 966-4700 to make your reservations.

From our Event Coordinator...
It has been an amazing July here in Lake Toxaway: a stark contrast from the never-ending rain we had last year! It was wonderful to share the Fourth of July with all of you and your families. We had more than 800 attendees and not a cloud in the sky for the fireworks display. I hope you all enjoyed sharing laughs with the magician and competing in the Toxaway Trivia during the Family Nights.
I don’t think I am alone when saying that I cannot believe it is already August! Although it may seem like we are nearing the summer’s end, we still have a lot of fun events in store for you this month.
We kick off with the Men’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament on August 7, 8, and 9. Spend the day on the course and then bring your dancing shoes for the awards dinner on Saturday! Come join Steve Rogers on August 11 while he shares his experience swimming across the English Channel at our third Feast with Friends. Please be sure to make reservations for this event, as we have had a full house each time! The Mardi Gras golf tournament will be held on Thursday, August 14, followed by a New Orleans-themed dinner and live music in the main clubhouse. And to wrap up the month, don’t forget to show your support for our veterans and their families at our annual Patriot Day on August 30, which includes golf, tennis, croquet, and fitness events during the day and a dinner dance in the evening. See more details throughout this issue.

Owned by the Raventos family of Spain, whose winemaking history dates to the mid-sixteenth century, Artesa winery takes its name from the Catalan word for “handcrafted.” The winery is dedicated to handcrafting small lots of ultra-premium still wines of the varietals for which the Carneros and the Napa Valley are best known: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
