We had another great Member-Member golfevent this year. Congratulations to the winners and the staff who put on a wonderful event. Also, we had a nice turnout for both the men’s and women’s club championships this year. Congrat-ulations to Jason Holstein and Emma Nicol, our club champions 2019. Our membership numbers continue to increase. Hopefully, the downstairs renovations will allow us to continue this trend into the foreseeable future. We are in the process of addressing the water leak in the main entry way. Once that problem is fixed, we will finalize the Wilson Room (adult lounge). With multiple televisions, the Wilson Room should be a prime location for watching football this fall. We also plan to move forward with the installation of lim-ited video lottery.

As many of you are aware, a critical com-ponent of our Sleepy Hollow team has decided to change jobs and is leaving the club. Our long-time course superintendent, Marshall Klay, is resigning effective August 14 to take a sales position. Mar-shall was integral in getting us and the golf course through some difficult times over the years. From my years on the board, I have learned the southern West Virginia climate has become one of the most difficult hurdles for maintaining a golf course. Marshall dealt with this hurdle well over the years and the course shows for it. Marshall recommend-ed, and the board approved, promoting Marshall’s assistant, Robert (RJ) Frulla, as interim course superintendent as we begin our search for a new superintendent. Marshall will continue working with us as a part time consultant through the fall.

Big thanks to Marshall for his years of committed hard work and best of luck in his new career.

We’ve enjoyed a successful summer at the club with our golf events and parties on the pa-tio all well attended. We will continue looking for ways to improve our longstanding events and add new events. To improve your experience at the club it is helpful to have volunteers assist with various events. I will be looking to expand activi-ties at the club throughout the remainder of 2019 and into 2020. We can make Sleepy Hollow even better, but we will need effort from members as volunteers. Suggesting ideas or improvements is one thing, helping us implement them is another. If your time is limited, you might consider joining the 1955 Club as a way to provide financial assis-tance for the betterment of the club.Hope to see you around the club. State ofThe Course

The Member Guest and the Member Membertournaments are behind us for this year. Both were very successful and I have heard many compliments concerning the course condi-tions this summer. Marshall and crew have worked long and hard on course plant health and their efforts have paid off. The greens have remained smooth and green through periods of extreme heat, rain and humidity; and later heat and drought. Kudos to the crew and their efforts. Next on the agenda is to shallow tine the greens with the ProCore 648. Deep tine will be scheduled for September. We will also be seeding the greens with bent grass as part of our normal fall program over the last couple of years.

As many of you have heard, Marshall has ac-cepted another career opportunity and will be leaving Sleepy Hollow on August 14. Marshall’s very capable assistant, R.J. Frulla will be the interim superintendent while we search for our next Greens Superintendent. If you see Mar-shall or R.J. wish them well in their upcoming endeavors.

The sleepy Sharks Swim team completed their season this month as regular season champions of the greater Kanawha Valley Swim league. This is the first time in recent years that they can boast this title. The team only had one loss in the regular season with wins over Cross lanes and South Hills. With new and old swimmers, the team came up strong when they needed to in order to secure the title.

For the first time City Meet was held at the Charleston Fami-ly YMCA as the University of Charleston is no longer supporting a swim facility. The Sharks per-formed well here as well Finishing as meet runner-up. The team is comprised of swimmers from 4-18 and of all different levels from beginner to national level caliber.

Even with the skill differences, everyone was able to improve and excel in the program coached by Kendra White.

“This was a great year! The kids did exceptionally well and I could have not asked for a better group. Ev-eryone came to practice, put in the time and hours without complaint, and this showed by the end of the season with our finishes in both the regular season and city meet” said White.

“I hope that all of the swimmers are proud of their accomplish-ments both in results at meets and the overall sense of achievement with just improving their times and developing friendships that we hope will last forever. I know that even though it can be a little tough

coming to practice all the time, I’m going to miss them now that the season is over.”

“Of course none of this would be possible without the help of Britany Higginbotham and Claire Watkins who were right beside me the whole season for coaching and adminis-trative help. Parents are also a key ingredient to a successful season because without their help the kids wouldn’t get to practice and the meets wouldn’t run”

Enjoy the rest of the summer before school starts and remember to watch in the spring for signups and we will see you next year. GO SHARKS!!!!
