Martin Neath Memorial Open3rd June

Martin & Michelle Neath

Last year's winning team of IanThreadgold, Jim Staunton, RichardAdcock and Andy Chinn were

desperate to retain their title in this, the second running of the MartinNeath Memorial Event, but it was notto be a repeat performance!

The weather Gods were kind for thesecond year running as sixty playersmaking up fifteen four player teamstook to the tees to contest the eventand to raise money for charity.

Playing a better ball stableford formatwith the best two scores in each teamcounting towards the overall teamscore and with players wearing pinkfor this special day the sixty went outin good spirit, hungry for glory and inanticipation of some great après-golfBBQ food.

The event generated some excitinggolf and the first team out brought ina score that looked to be a winningone and indeed topped the leaderboard for most of the morning andwas only equalled by a team thatwere much later starters; it was theTeam of Bob Wood, Dave Bradley,Neil Harrison and Geoff Edge thatreturned that tied score, a veryrespectable 93 points, whichsnatched victory at the eleventh houron countback. The victorious ‘boys’carded (best 2 scores per hole) one 7point, seven 6 points, just one 3 pointand the remainder, 4 or 5 point holesto snatch the win with their excellentback nine score of 45 points.

Relegated down to second place wasthe team comprising Jamie Newton,Mark Purser, Ade Day and JohnGriffiths who, although setting theearly standard, could only amass 41points on the back nine which, afterholding a tremendous 52 points at theturn, was a little disappointing andcostly. Having managed to cardseven 6 point holes and and one 8point hole (only one other teammanaged an 8 pointer!) they came togrief on the back nine when theycould only tally 3 points on each ofholes thirteen and fourteen whichproved to be the turning point for theearly pace-setters.

Coming in in third place was teamBarrie Hope, Steve Baylis, Richard

Higgs and Mark Keeling who togetherbrought home 90 points just 1 pointahead of the fourth placed team ofDuane Parsons, Ben Parsons, AndyTurner and Joe Jackson. Both thirdand fourth placed teams started wellbut faltered on the back, more windaffected, nine holes.

– Martin Neath Memorial Open

There were also two on-coursecompetitions staged; longest drive onthe eleventh which was won (bysome distance) by the monster driveof Richard Higgs with John Griffithstaking the win for closest to the pin onthe fifth with a tee shot that latercompetitors agreed, “would haveneeded an ace to beat it!”.

The great day was rounded off on thepatio with a number of family andfriends enjoying a BBQ (courtesy of,and many thanks to, Chef of the dayViv Tinker and her hard workinghelpers Zachary Tinker and EmilyTinker) and a few refreshing drinksbefore a raffle for donated prizes(many thanks to the donors).

After expenses, the event raised£440 for St Richards Hospice.

So, last year's victors couldn't do theunthinkable and had to hand overbragging rights to Team Wood,Bradley, Harrison and Edge but, theycan still be proud that their score of101 points last year remainsunbeaten!

Media Matters

If everything goes to plan you will be reading this July Newsletter prior to thecommencement of the due month and I would like to notify everyone that yourMedia Centre will be closed over the last two weeks of June and into the firstweek of July. During said period there will be no updates to our main Website,Facebook or Competition feedback archives. Hopefully, normal service will beresumed immediately following the return of your Editor to his 'office'.

A Few Timely Reminders Folks

Page 9: CLUB NEWS - memberssection

As I write for this month’s newsletter,it would seem we have had nastychange in the weather……pretty coldand wet! Not the golfing conditionswe would all like! I am, however, pleased with the progress made onthe greens. Although the spring waslate this year, the works we carriedout have started to bear fruit. Theplaying surfaces are looking a lotbetter and the coverage and quality ofgrass, I hope you will agree, isexcellent. As the condition of thegreens have improved, we have beendiscussing ways to improve the pace. The height of cut has been lowered to3mm and we will continue to verti-cut.In time, if we can keep the surfaceshealthy, we will be able to speedthem up a bit!

Over the coming weeks other areasof the course will get more attention. We have a full course sprayingbooked in to kill the clover and otherundesirable weeds that encroachonto the playing areas. All in all, however, I think the course is in pretty

good shape and our greens keepersshould be congratulated.

We do have some longer term/largerprojects in mind. You will have seenthe improvements to the bridge onthe 7th. If this holds up well, we willdo the other 2 bridges in the sameway. We are looking at somedrainage work for the wettest areas tohelp keep the course playablethrough the winter months.

Our biggest, ongoing issue, is thebunkers. We have ordered 2 loads ofsand to top them up, however, due tothe poor construction, it is literally likethrowing money down the drain. When it rains, the new sand mixeswith the contaminated sand andquickly turns to a material that setssolid. This is why, it appears there isno sand in the bunkers. In actual fact,if you dig hard, you will see, in mostcases there is loads of sand but it hasset like concrete. We could pile 10-12inches on top, which is what hashappened on the Perdiswell side,

although this means the sand isn’tcompact, they are equally impossibleto play from. We will be taking a viewas to how we can redesign holes andgreen complexes to make sure allhazards are appropriate andinteresting. Unfortunately, the bunkerissue is a problem at many coursesand is not as simple as just putting inmore sand…..but we are on it! Andwill start a program of works to getthem right.

As some of you may know, Adam,Leo and myself play in a few Pro-Amsthrough the year. I’d like tocongratulate Adam on winning themost recent one at Cleobury Mortimerwith a fine score of 2 under Par. Welldone Ad! We are often looking forplaying partners to make up teams, ifyou would like to get involved pleasespeak to one of us and we can let youknow the dates.

Happy Golfing!
