Random Acts Funding Returns on December 4 Once again, the GJ Lions will practice their unique Ran- dom Acts of Kindness, and member who attend the Dec. 4 meeting will be able to participate. In this program, members who are current on their club bill will be given a $100 bill to donate to anyone they encoun- ter whom (in their opinion) needs it. While some members simply donate it to their favorite charity, that’s not the purpose of the program. The goal is to find individuals in need. It could be someone in front of you at the prescription counter, or a single mom shipping for Christmas who can’t afford something. Also, a few members try to match the donation and ex- pand the program to have a bigger impact. In the past, a hand- ful will get together and pool their funds to but a major item for a particular family. The origin of this GJ Lions program came from an idea from Past President Gregg Palmer. He learned about a Rotary Club in California who did something similar, but instead of money, they gave out little seed packets. Explained Palmer, “If we can take a Rotary idea, and then make it far better than what those cheap tightwads were doing, then so much the better.” Trivia Answer Last month’s challenge dealt with expansion teams in Ma- jor League Baseball. The question was to name the city that has received not one, but two expansion teams — and was awarded those two teams within 8 years. The answer is Seattle, who was granted the Seattle Pilots in 1962, who then became the Milwaukee Brewers the very next year. Then MLB gave Seattle the Mariners, who actually stayed this time. The first correct answer came from Craig Hall. Incorrect guesses came from Larry Jones (who guessed Chicago), Nick Beightel (Los Angeles), Joe O’Connor (Washington/Baltimore), and Jim Nickerson (Tom Brady). currently attending medical school at the University of Virginia. Daughter Marisa just graduated from the University of Seattle. And daughter Tina is busy raising Lucia, the Johnsons favorite (and so far only) grandchild. Maria’s mother was born in Mexico in the state of Guadala-jara, while her father was born in Spain (but grew up in Guada-lajara). Maria speaks fluent Spanish, and even lived in Mexico for a time. After leaving the Navy, Roger got involved with the Kia corporation in 1992. He later was a partner in a Kia franchise in Tacoma that eventually became the top dealership in Washing-ton. Roger began consulting other dealerships for Kia, and one of those was in Grand Junction. After five months in GJ, Roger decided to buy the franchise in October of 2016. Maria moved from Seattle to join him in October, 2017. Maria handles the public relations and marketing for their franchise. Part of the reason for buying the local franchise was how much they liked the community. Maria joined the GJ Lions because of the influence of her sponsor, Julian Henao. She was his guest at lunch, and she en-joyed the rapport of the club meeting. She was also impressed with the work the GJ Lions do in the community, “And who wouldn’t want to be part of that?” she explained.

Correction: In last months newsletter, there was a profile of new mem-ber (and retired Anchorage detective) Gil Davis. Unfortunately, throughout the story, he was misidentified as Gil Stone. There are two possible explanation for this egregious error: First, the editor had a sudden flashback to Gil Stone, a long-time investigator with local law enforcement; or Two, the editor is getting old, is losing his mind, and needs to be replaced. Regardless, we regret the error.

Carnival Night Sponsors Needed We still have some openings for sponsors for Carnival Night, such as wheel sponsors ($250) or the big banner sponsors (prices range from $500 to $5,000). If you have a business that you’d like to promote or adver-tise, or you just received that unexpected inheritance from your mysterious Aunt Gertrude, contact Deb to get the form. The forms are also generally available on the tables at our weekly meetings.

Meet Maria Johnson This new member is new to Grand Junction, as well as new to the GJ Lions. Born in San Francisco, Maria and her husband Roger are the new owners of Grand West Kia (in the photo at the bottom of this column). The recently moved here from Seattle. Marie was born in San Francisco, and eventually moved to Tucson to attend nursing school at the University of Arizona. After graduation, she worked for a while as an RN in oncology, but soon filled a need in the area for home health care. She start-ed her own business. Meanwhile, her husband Roger was in the Navy, serving in Intelligence. He eventually served 15 years (plus two years in the Army reserves. The Johnsons have five children, and the pressures of rais-ing that many kids made it difficult to juggle a business and Maria eventually became a full-time mother. Of the five, only son Mitch is still at home. He works at Grand West Kia in the service department. Their son Taylor is currently in the U.S. Navy. Daughter Chelsea has just completed her service in the Marines, and is
