2Congratulations to all

our Club Champions, Jayshree Gupta (ladies’ champion)

Rayhan Thomas (men’s and junior boys’ champion) and Alison Muirhead (junior girls’ champion) three new names to grace the honours boards. Congratulations to you all and well done.

April sees some traditional EGC events taking place – the Indian invitational which is

always a great tournament. We will miss our Past Captain, Ashok Bakshi who was such a driving force behind this event, who sadly passed away in February. This event is supported by the Indian community who put up so many fantastic prizes, particularly for the raffle, proceeds of which go to the junior staff fund at EGC.

Our mixed Easter scramble takes place on 4th April which is always a good fun event and well subscribed. The top billings though are the Club Captain’s Day on 24th April and Lady Captain’s Day on 27th, both of which are usually great fun....and long days/evenings!

Away from EGC is the eagerly awaited Augusta Masters 9th-12th April so there will be a few late nights for many people who will be glued to the TV until almost sunrise here in the UAE. Fortunately I will be there, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying every minute of the action, in the company of Past Captain, Mike Gerbich and his wife Francie, as well as Past Captain Mike Sim. There are a few EGC members travelling to Augusta too, as well as former EGC Greens Superintendent Jeff Julich and his family, so exciting times ahead!

There was good news last month with the announcement that Dubai Duty Free will be sponsoring the Irish Open at Royal County Down at the end of May - another great event to enjoy.

Back to our own courses here though…the Majlis and the Faldo are still in great condition and a pleasure to play so all credit to Craig, Peter and crew. Please also do your part in keeping the courses in tip top condition by repairing pitch marks, filling in divots with the sand provided and raking bunkers.

Our staff throughout the Club do a fantastic job, whether in the restaurants, spike bar, driving range or on course and we are so fortunate to have friendly and helpful staff to see to our every needs. One group of staff which really needs more respect though, is the team of on-course marshalls. It seems that time and time again, the marshalls, whose role it is to keep everyone moving on the course to avoid the frustration of slow play, are challenged and/or abused by players. Just last week once again, a men’s pairs matchplay waited constantly behind a group of four members who refused to let them through, despite five requests by the marshall. That’s such a sad reflection on our membership. Personally I would much prefer to let a fast group go through rather than to see them constantly standing waiting behind. Please assist our staff at all times and help them to do their jobs properly.

Enjoy your golf and happy Easter to all.

Hello my friends. This month sees my Captain’s Day taking place so I hope to see all of you there

on the day to support me and, more importantly, to support the Club. I promise you it will be a wonderful day, full of prizes...and surprises and the day is being sponsored by HSBC. The first surprise may well be my Captain’s Day drive but once that ordeal is done then we will move forward to a really fun day followed by a spectacular evening when I hope to be greeting all the players as well as their partners. I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. I really would have loved to have had my good friend Mohsin Al Tajir here for the big day, as well as Past Captains, Mike Gerbich, Rai Legnar

and Mike Sim - you will be there in spirit I know!

My mantra of ‘no stress in my life’ has taken a bit of a battering in the last few weeks as I have been busy putting together a programme for my Captain’s Day...believe me it has not been easy but I do feel like everything is now in place for the day...I think!!

What a quick season it has been....where did the time go? I am now nearing the end of my captaincy. Officially it finishes on August 31st but, our regular golf season really wraps up by mid-June. Competitions continue throughout the summer but numbers are far fewer at that time when we hit high temperatures of 45 plus.

Good luck to all those who brave that heat because it is really too much for me and I have to seek some cooler temperatures elsewhere in the world.

Congratulations to all prize-winners in our Club Championship and special congratulations to our new Club Champion Rayhan Thomas. What a wonderful display of golf by this young man. I think we will be seeing his name in the headlights a lot more in the near future.

Waite Wins Monthly MedalThe Mashreq Medal for March, in association with BMW and Ruth’s Chris Steak House Dubai, was a closely contested affair with four players tied on the overall winning score of 70 on the Majlis course.

Thanks to some very consistent golf on the back nine holes, it was David Waite who took the overall spoils along with the A Division honours (handicap 0-10). Waite made seven gross pars and one birdie over the last nine holes of the Majlis course to secure victory. Also in A Division with net scores of 70 were Qamar Rasheed and Imran Qayyum. Rasheed claimed second place after a card count-back with Qayyum settling for third place.

B Division (handicap 11-20) was won by Rajesh Verma, again with a score of two under par net 70, closely followed by the runner-up Ishu Rupani who scored a net 71. In third place, a further two shots adrift with a net 73, was Tej Chhabra.

Christian Klynge was the winner of C Division (handicap 21-28) with a level par net score of 72.

The honour for the lowest gross of the day went to young Bradley Mogire who scored a superb score of 75. Bradley is a product of the Club’s Elite Junior Programme who meet on a weekly basis under the watchful eye of our academy team led by Head Professional Stephen Deane.

This month’s Mashreq Medal was also a

qualifying round for the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup. Two places were available for the best net scores, the first being secured by David Waite and the second by Rajesh Verma. Both Waite and Verma will now play on home soil of the Majlis course in the regional finals on April 7th when they will compete for a place in the world finals being held in Istanbul.

Historic Hat-trick for Young RayhanYoung Dubai Golf member Rayhan Thomas again produced some outstanding final day golf on the Majlis course to add the 2015 Emirates Club Championship to his list of honours. Rayhan has already won the Emirates Amateur Open, the Emirates Junior Club Championship along with the Dubai Creek Club Championship over the past few months. Rayhan becomes the first player on record to win them all in one season, a fantastic achievement by the talented 15 year old.

Rayhan had to come from behind after posting a 75 on day one over the Faldo course. Playing in the penultimate group on the final day, he showed his class over the Majlis by scoring an impressive five under par 67 to record a tally of 142 to win by six strokes.

Pontus Fredriksson had a successful attempt to defend the title that he has won five times in the past six years. Pontus carded rounds of 73 and 75 to finish runner-up on a total of 148. A further shot adrift with scores of

75 and 74 to sign for a 149 total was Vice-Captain Johnny Aldridge who birdied the par five 18th hole to secure third place alone.

In the net prizes, Division A (handicap 0-12) was closely contended with Kooros Daneshvar producing two level par 72s. Also with a net total of 144 was Tom Luig; however the 72 on day two for Daneshvar was good enough to secure victory over Luig who finished in second place. B division (handicap 13-24) was won by Anil Shivanna who signed for a net 70 followed by a net 68 to tally 138 and to claim top spot by three strokes. The runner-up was Christian Klynge with net scores of 70 and 71 totalling 141.

LADIES’ CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

LADIES’ MEDAL

LADY CAPTAIN’S CHARITY EVENT IN AID OF DUBAI CARES

Sponsored by

Our Ladies’ Club Championship was held last month on 1st and 2nd March

and this year’s champion is Jayshree Gupta who played very steadily both days to win her first Championship. Congratulations Jayshree!

Another big event last month was the Ladies’ Charity Golf Day when we raised a total of AED 31,910 for ‘Dubai Cares’, supporting children’s education and wellbeing. Last year, in the early part of the season the Pink Ball Charity raised AED 42,680. I would like to say many thanks to all who bought raffle

tickets and also to everyone who kindly donated raffle prizes, and thanks to everyone who supported these events.

This year, as is often the case, we have been saying good-bye to some friends who are leaving Dubai, which is very sad, but it’s something we get used to doing and we have to accept this inevitability. However, every year we get to meet new people too, and I am sure friends will be back in Dubai some time for their holidays. The most important thing is that we have met in Dubai and we have made good memories.

So, what’s happening in April? Well, we have many events taking place before it gets too hot so please keep your eyes on the tournament calendar. 14th April is the EGC Members’ party when we can all get together and have a good excuse to dress up! The annual Curtisy Cup (Europe v Rest of the World) takes place on 22nd April. 27th April is Lady Captain’s Day. This will be a totally fun golf day followed by a long lunch after the game so don’t forget to sign-up.

EMIRATESAMATEUR OPEN Thursday 5th Friday 6th March 2015

Rayhan Follows Rory with Emirates Victory

Representing the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, young Rayhan Thomas followed in the footsteps of Rory Mcilroy on the Majlis course and triumphed in the 26th Omega Emirates Amateur Open.

Rayhan headed into the final round six shots adrift of the overnight leader, Jack Davis, following an opening 75 on the Faldo course. Rayhan, playing in the penultimate group on the final day, began steadily before producing five birdies in six holes, including four

consecutive birdies from the 10th hole to put him at the top of the leaderboard. Even with a dropped shot at the par three 15th, victory was never in doubt as he finished in style with a birdie at the famous 18th hole. Signing for a final round 68 (-4) Rayhan secured a six stroke winning margin.

Bayhaan Lakdawala (Dubai Creek) and Petr Dedek (Emirates Golf Club) both finished on five over par for the championship but Lakdawala’s 73 in the final round granted him runners-up place for the second consecutive year. Three players ended up on six over for the event and it was Christofer Rahm of the Swedish Golf Federation who went home with fourth place following a level par 72 on the final day.

The top four prize-winners were all rewarded with Omega hospitality for the 2015 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the end of the year and Rayhan also secured a place in the Pro-Am.

The net competition was also keenly contested with Lee White (Frilford Heath, UK) clinching top prize with net rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 total (six over par). He took a two shot victory over the Dubai Creek duo of Miki Mirza and Kabir Nanda both on a 152 net total. Mirza claimed the runner-up place with a better net score of 77 on the final day.

UK based Jack Davies (Aston Wood GC) was disappointed with his final round but won best gross on day one with a three under par 69 on the Faldo course, a fabulous effort from the championship tees. Zihao Su (Al Badia) carded a 73 in the final round to pick up best gross on day two. Also in the prizes were Martin Zika (Golf Club Praha) and Jai Bhalla (Dubai Creek) for best net on day one and day two respectively.

Start the Downswing correctly A simple tip for all levels of golfer is to be aware of how their shoulders work during the start of the downswing. What we want is to prevent is the trail shoulder coming out and around (external rotation) towards the ball or target as we initiate the downswing. The simple drill as shown will help promote the correct feeling and shoulder motion required to initiate and develop a consistent downswing movement. Part 1: Drill: starting position with split hand grip and club shaft matching feet and shoulder line

Part 2: Set the club half way back by letting the hands work up and the trail elbow fold.

Part 3: Solidly fire or punch the trail shoulder, hands and arms down returning and matching the shaft to its original starting position. You will sense that the trail shoulder works down rather than out and around. You will also start to understand the feeling of down force and pressure on the ball and how this can dramatically improve your ball striking and distance. You will feel more centred and grounded as you approach your shots. The club head will also return with limited rotation or manipulation improving the consistency of your ball flights starting direction.

For more information on how to develop this further and build solid mechanics please get in contact with Head Professional Stephen Deane via email [email protected]

CARE OF YOUR COURSE

BuNkERS

Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others using the rakes provided.

REPAIR Of DIVOTS, BALL-MARkS AND DAMAGE BY SHOES

Players should carefully repair any divots made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.

PREVENTING uNNECESSARY DAMAGE

Players should ensure that no damage is done to the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick.

In order to avoid damaging the hole, players and caddies should not stand too close to the hole and should take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. The head of a club should not be used to remove a ball from the hole.

Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green, particularly when removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green.

With The Masters just around the corner, I thought I would include this

interesting article that I received from Past Captain, Mike Gerbich, which was written by a friend of

his, Tom Roydhouse who lives at Reynolds Plantation, an hour away from Augusta!

There has always been an attraction for golfers towards the hallowed grounds of Augusta National. The Masters is one of the most unusual events in sport; it is all about tradition, and it is defined by a set of old rules and customs that just do not exist in other tournaments.

1. In the BeginningThe Masters as we know it would never have been, if the USGA had not turned down Bobby Jones’ request to host the 1934 US Open. Angry at the rebuff, Jones and Clifford Roberts decided to stage their own event.

2. Bitter SweetCourse architect, Alistair McKenzie, never saw his famous course completed. He died January 6th 1934, just two months before the Inaugural Masters Tournament.

3. The LanguageYou should never hear the word ‘championship’ on the telecast. The US Open, The Open, and The PGA are championships held by the major ruling and organising bodies of the sport (or a vestige thereof in the case of the PGA).The Masters is an invitational

tournament held at a very pretty golf course, given prestige by the involvement of Bobby Jones. The winner is not the champion of anything. Other words you should not hear: ‘fans’, ‘bleachers’, ‘sand traps’, ‘front/back nine’, The officially preferred words are ‘patrons’, ‘observation stands’, ‘bunkers’ and ‘first/second nine’. That last distinction

is aimed at avoiding use of the phrase ‘front side’ for the first nine holes, leading inevitably to the so, so vulgar ‘back side for the next nine.

4. RespectSome amateurs have always been invited to the Masters, out of respect for the career of club founder Bobby Jones but Jones himself was no longer considered an

amateur by the USGA by the time Augusta National opened. He never competed for prize money, but his equipment deals and Hollywood instructional short films made him a professional in the eyes of all, except for the eyes of the Masters hierarchy, of which he was a part.

5. Ahhh.the Green JacketIf you just happen to be the winner of the Masters, you get the honour of topping off the standard ensemble with a shamrock

green blazer. Professional golf’s version of a beauty queen crowning ceremony, the presenting of the green jacket by the previous year’s champion to the current champion at the conclusion of the tournament dates back to 1949, when Sam Snead won the Masters. However, the signature jackets started appearing at Augusta National 12 years prior, when

members started sporting them during the tournament so that they would be easily identifiable by patrons in need of assistance or directions. Also, when a member hosts guests in the clubhouse, the green jacket designates who gets the bill. The Masters website has more on the sartorial back story: “The club purchased the jackets from the Brooks Uniform Company in New York and urged members to buy and wear them at the Masters. Initially, the idea met a lukewarm

reception from the membership, for the heft of the coats made them warm to wear during a typical April in Augusta.

Within a few years, the Club introduced a lighter-weight version more suited to the season. Today’s single-breasted, single-vent jacket bears the Club’s logo on the left chest pocket and on the brass buttons adorning the front of the coat and each sleeve. The unmistakable colour is known, simply, as Masters Green.”

So does the Masters winner get to take home that fetching piece of outerwear? He sure does. After the presentation ceremony, a custom version of the green jacket is tailored to the champion’s exact measurements and he gets to call it his own for an entire year. So, to be clear, a single jacket isn’t passed on from winner to winner. During the following year’s tournament, he must return to Augusta National and relinquish the green jacket, at which point it is placed in a locker but

available any time he returns to play at the club. Seve Ballesteros famously challenged the decision by saying to the Augusta committee: “If they want it, they can fly to Spain and come and get it.”

6. The TemplateThe Masters invented the template for what we know as tournament golf. It was the first 72-hole four-day event and the first to use the over/under par system. The Masters also saw the first grandstands for viewers.

7. Strict but PoliteThe level of respect that the patrons

of the Masters have is only surpassed by their understanding of the game. It is awesome to witness. It is as if everyone has collectively agreed to be on their best behaviour. There is no need for marshalls to hold “Quiet Please” signs because everyone respects the tournament so much.

As mentioned earlier, they are not fans, they are not a crowd or even a gallery. They are patrons. You will hear it often during the CBS broadcast. Also, while on the grounds, patrons are told not to run. Walking only.

If you watch any pro tournament, behind the golfers you’ll see a cadre of sign-bearers, reporters, photographers, broadcast personnel and cameramen. Not at Augusta. Between the ropes there are competitors, caddies and rules officials only.

Patrons who show up early and place their chairs and leave will find their chairs waiting for them when they return. Try that at any other PGA event and let me know what happens!

More than 40 years ago, during one tense moment, CBS commentator Jack Whitaker used the term “mob” to describe the scene around a green. The Masters leadership let his bosses know that he would not be invited back, and he wasn’t.

8. ValueIt’s one of the best-kept numbers in sports - the initiation fee to Augusta National. With Barons like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, among others, as members, it goes without saying that money is not the object. And it isn’t. To join is reportedly under $100,000, which might be one-tenth of other high profile clubs in the country and if you were lucky enough to play the

Masters Week

Nine Holes of Rules...In this month’s article I will answer nine questions that will help to recap and brush up on your basic knowledge for the next time you head out to the course.

1. What does the term “Equity” mean?Equity means to treat like situations alike. Some situations are not covered by the rules of golf, thus the decision must be made according to what is fair under the rules. Equity is NOT a substitute for the proper application of the rules.

2. Can a player place a club on the ground to help alignment?Yes, provided the club is removed before playing the stroke. Otherwise the player is penalised two strokes.

3. If my ball lands in a bunker can I rake it before I play my shot?Yes, provided that it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course. For example, your ball lies on the left hand side and after retrieving the rake you smooth your footprints in order to keep the bunker tidy before moving to your ball. There are no penalties providing that the smoothing does not improve:• the lie of the ball.• the area of your intended stance or swing.• your line of play for a stroke.

4. May a player clean a ball by rubbing it on the putting green?Yes, provided the act is not for the purpose of testing the surface of the putting green. However, It is strongly recommended that a ball be cleaned in other ways to eliminate any questions as to the player’s intentions.

5. A player’s ball is lying on the fairway and in taking a practice swing, he accidentally moves the ball. Does he incur a penalty? The player did not make a stroke, as they had no intention of making a stroke. However, the ball was in play and the player has caused the ball at rest to move. The player incurs a one-stroke penalty and must replace the ball.

6. May stakes defining a water hazard or lateral water hazard be moved?A water hazard stake is an obstruction. Therefore if such a stake is movable it may be removed without penalty. Please note that white OOB posts MUST not be removed!

7. Where can a player deem his ball unplayable?A player can deem his ball unplayable anywhere on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable.

8. Must a player announce that he intends to change his ball between the play of two holes? It is not required by the rules to inform anyone what type of ball he intends to play at a hole. However, such an announcement is highly recommended to avoid any possible confusion.

9. Can I remove sand that lies on the putting green even though my ball lies off the putting green?Sand and loose soils are loose impediments ONLY when they lie on the putting green. Provided that the sand and loose soil lie on the putting green and NOT the surround, it may be removed.

course with a member, you can probably afford it. Guest fees are said to be about $40.

9. The Reagan AppointmentOn October 23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan was playing at Augusta National as a guest of his Secretary of State (and club member) George Schultz, when his round was interrupted at the 16th hole by a disgruntled local named Charles Harris, who had crashed his truck through the gate and was demanding to see the President. Harris held hostages at gunpoint in the pro shop for two hours before Secret Service agents subdued him.

10. Clifford Roberts’ DemiseAugusta National’s co-founder Clifford Roberts, a quiet investor turned autocrat, was at turns beloved and despised. In the fall of 1977, at age 83 and in failing health, Roberts walked to a slope next to Ike’s Pond and ended his own life with a single pistol shot to the temple.

11. The Crow’s NestLocated above the main clubhouse at Augusta, this is where the amateurs stay for Masters week. Bobby Jones spawned the idea and the rest is quite literally history, lots of it. Eight youngsters who stayed in this infamous bedroom and went on to win the green jacket are Nicklaus, Aaron, Watson, Crenshaw, Stadler, O’Meara, Mickelson and Woods - that’s quite a list. There are four beds, a bathroom and a living area which is lined with paintings of historical moments at the Masters and books about the history of the game.

12. Sweet Georgia PeachesThe history of Augusta is much more than golf; it was once home to Fruitland Nurseries. Owned and operated by P.J. Berckmans and his family, the nursery was one of the most successful horticultural sites of its time in the south.Located on Washington Road, approximately three miles northwest of downtown Augusta, Fruitland planted millions of peach trees in the 1800s and early 1900s and made Georgia famous for its sweet Georgia peaches. In 1931, the land was purchased and transformed into the most famous golf course in the world, Augusta National. The Berckmans’ family home still remains on the Augusta National property and serves as the clubhouse.

Running Training tips– Return to fitness

by David Baines MSC Sports Physiotherapist, Bespoke Wellness

Congratulations to those who took part in the EGC half marathon on 20th March 2015; it was a great event with growing interest. For those of you

who are runners or would like to get into running, here are some tips which might help you along the way, which will also help avoid becoming injured during those heavy training schedules.

Training PlanThe first step to successful training is to plan! This can be as short or as detailed as you require in order to guide you with your training.Tip: Keep your planning flexible, allow for sufficient rest periods, make sure you listen to your body and balance it with the rest of your life (work/family etc).Tip: Record your sessions so you can see how you have progressed and keep an eye on your overall training volume.

Phases of trainingThe stages of your training programme should be focused around four main principles that can be adapted whether you’re a sprinter or a long-distance runner. These stages are • Endurance• Strength endurance• Strength• Power/speed phase Following this system will allow you to do the following:-• build a good base so you have the conditioning for the faster paced work later on• work different body energy systems• make sure you increase your quality of training towards race/event pace work. footwear and running surfaceBe sure to get good shoes that are fitted correctly. Have adequate cushioning and if needed, offer some level of support. A gait running analysis might help here. This will improve your running efficiency and help to prevent common running injuries. If you’re running in older trainers a rough guide is 400-600 miles before they need replacing.

Try to alternate the type of ground you’re running on, because different surfaces offer different pros and cons in terms of technique, stresses on the body and injury prevention.

Avoid sand if you have a history of ankle sprains or Achilles tendinitis.

Track running can be an ideal place to start running outside as it is flat (no obstacles), traffic-free, and the distance is measured.

Strength ProgrammeIntegrating a strength-training programme into training is very important. Strengthening your legs can increase the power and control of the muscles that control movement at the pelvis, hips, knees and feet during running. This will ultimately help to prevent you from developing muscle imbalances from weak muscle groups that are not emphasised in running, or can stop muscles (that you use again and again while running) from becoming over-dominant.Tip: Alternate between using body weight and weighted exercise (free weights/machines) and don’t forget the core!

Distance/Mileage and IntensityRunners too often get caught in the mileage trap, thinking more is better. Increasing your mileage is better only up to the point where you can achieve your goal and depending on your stage of training. Make sure you don’t build up your miles too quickly or do too many miles in one week as this will make you more susceptible to injury.

Tip; The general rule for guiding your running mileage is to increase no more than 10% or two miles per week.

IntensityVary your training volume and load. The training volume is the frequency and repetition of your workouts and the load relates to how hard your training sessions are and how much time you will need to recover before the next session. By changing either of these you can change your workout intensity and make sure you’re not doing too much of the same thing.

Alternating between hard, moderate and easy days will allow you to work different energy systems, allow you to recover quicker and get more from each session. Whether you’re just starting running, getting back into your running after a short break, or beginning to increase your training intensity (having perhaps set a New Year’s resolution plan), then following these points will help you on your way.

Dear Members,

Last month I discussed motivation and how best to keep yourself motivated to get to the gym and to keep

up your workouts, which I hope was useful for you.

Fit Lab continues to be busy and I have noticed that there is an increase in the number of people booking personal training sessions

– great news for you and for our trainers. We are always at hand to help; all of our trainers are approachable and you do not need to have booked a session with them to ask for some advice on exercise as everyone is more than happy to help.

This month I am focusing on a simple little piece of equipment which is often overlooked…the foam roller, or as I like to call it, the ‘torturer’…it hurts but it is so beneficial.

uSING THE fOAM ROLLER

Foam rollers are an inexpensive and versatile piece of equipment that can help you with everything, from working out the knots in your muscles to sculpting an incredible set of abs. - if you aren’t already using one, you’re missing out on some serious benefits!

Foam rolling is an easy way to benefit your entire body; while stretching addresses the length of muscle fibre, rolling improves the quality of the tissue which leads to muscles that are tension-free and pain-free, which in turn function better so you perform better.

Using a foam roller is essentially a more affordable way to give yourself a deep tissue massage. By slowly rolling over various areas of your body, you’ll help break up adhesions and scar tissue and speed up the healing and recovery process after your workout.

COMMON AREAS Of TIGHTNESS ARE TYPICALLY THE THIGHS OR uPPER BACk.

Here’s how; position yourself on top of the roller and use the weight of your body to slowly roll back and forth over it, allowing your bodyweight to relax over the roll. As you roll over tight spots the muscle relaxes.

For tightness in the upper back, place the roller under your shoulder blades, bend your knees so your feet are flat on the floor. Lift your hips off the floor and place your hands behind your head, or cross your arms over your chest.

ROLL: keeping your core muscles tight, slowly roll forward and back so that the roller moves up and down between the middle of your back and the top of your shoulder blades

AfTER A LONG RuN, SLIP Off YOuR SHOES AND TRY THIS EASY fOOT STRETCH/MASSAGE: Stand with your foam roller under the arch of one foot. Gently apply pressure to the arch by leaning your weight forward and slowly roll your foot back and forth over the roller.

If you have any questions, or if you would like ten minutes of my time to help you do these exercises, do feel free to approach me.

We trust you are enjoying the great golfing weather at present. Our courses are in good

condition at this time of year with us doing the basics to keep things in shape. The only cultural maintenance underway is our regular light sand applications which remain integral to good ball roll and smoothness of surfaces. These amounts are minimal and usually are not visible the following day.

We did two larger projects on the Faldo recently, around the 10th and 11th green complexes. We have converted the grass species around these greens so that we can gain better control of a particular weed which will greatly enhance our ability to maintain a clean stand of turf for you to enjoy. We appreciate at this time whilst the new sprig is growing in that it can be a pain, however please use the dedicated drop zones provided to play from. We will only move onto other approaches once these two are fully grown in.

Transition on the Majlis is something we will be going through over the months of April through June this year and we anticipate this to be a very gradual process as the Ryegrass begins to stress out due to the heat and we encourage our Bermuda to return from dormancy. We will keep you well informed of what stage we are at throughout this period. To date we are only in the very early stages so nothing of relevance this month.

Good golfing!

BIRDS OF THE EMIRATES

Pied MynaScientific Name: Gracupica contraShot: Dubai Emirates Golf Club (Faldo Course)Date shot: February 2015Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pied_myna

Description:

A common bird at the golf ourse, the Pied Myna is a

species of the Starling family of birds. The bird’s usual habitat is on low flat lands and foothills with access to water. This myna is distinctive with its black and white plumage with the orange beak. The sexes are similar in plumage but young birds have dark brown in place of black. These starlings are usually found in small groups, foraging mainly on the ground but perching on trees and buildings. Birds in a group call frequently with a wide repertoire that includes whistles, trills, buzzes, clicks, and warbling calls. Much like in the picture, they forage in fields, lawns and on open ground feeding on grains, fruit, insects, earthworms and molluscs, usually taken from the ground. Like many other starlings, they often use a prying or gaping action, piercing soil and then opening apart the bill to dislodge hidden food. These birds are generally considered to be beneficial as they eat insects that are otherwise pests.

At Emirates Golf Club, these birds are hard to miss on the Faldo course. They are usually found near the pathways in the mornings and evenings, as you drive around in the golf cart. The image was shot soon after the bird pecked out an earthworm from under the ground on the course.

RETAIL NEWSDear Member,

Please be advised that from the 1st April 2015 the Pro Shops at Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club will be managed by Pro Sports International. Pro Sports have been a long standing partner of Dubai Golf and we have been working with them as our preferred supplier for the past five years.Pro Sports carry a wide range of products, including some of the world’s leading golf brands such as Ping, Titleist, Footjoy and Greg Norman; in addition a range of golf apparel, hardware and accessories from other manufacturers will be available within our retail operation, to ensure you, as a member, have a wide range of world class products.

As a Dubai Golf member you will continue to receive your 10% member discount on purchases within the Pro Shops; you can also continue to charge purchases to your membership account on production of a valid membership card. There will essentially be no changes to the operation of the retail outlets from a member or guest perspective.

A thorough review of our retail operation was made prior to making this decision and we are confident that the new arrangement will ensure that our members continue to receive the optimum level of choice and service delivery within our Pro Shops. We have put measures in place to ensure that the transition period is as smooth as possible with minimal disruption to our members and guests.

In taking the decision it was extremely important to us that our current retail team remained within the operation at both Clubs to also ensure that the service, quality and members’ experience remain consistent. As part of the arrangement all existing retail colleagues have been offered positions by Pro Sports.

Following this change we will continue to benchmark our retail operation against customer service levels globally through the 59 Club golf benchmarking criteria as we do with all other operational areas of both clubs.

In order to facilitate the handover of the Pro Shops we will have some early closures for stocktaking over the coming days. At Dubai Creek the Academy Pro Shop will be closed from 08.00 on 28th March (re-opening at approximately 13.00) and the Pro Shop in the main clubhouse will close at 17.00 on the 28th March. Retail operations will continue as normal from 29th March. The Pro Shop at Emirates Golf Club will close from 17.00 on 29th March and will reopen as per the usual timing on 30th March.

Thank you in advance for your co-operation during this period and for your continued support of Dubai Golf.

Yours sincerely,

Christopher MayChief Executive Officer

E WHAT’S COOKINgIn keeping with the seasons, the final recipe I would like to share with you is English Pea and Goat Cheese Ravioli with Parmesan Cream. Spring is a great time of the year as the new produce of the growing season starts to emerge. Depending on where you are in the world these include, but are not limited to, fiddleheads, white and green asparagus, English peas, snap peas and snow peas, chanterelle and morel mushrooms and of course, the white and black spring truffle. This is one of my favourite recipes as I believe it showcases these great ingredients.

Dear Members,

It is with mixed emotion that I have to let you know that this will be my final submission for Club Life magazine here at Emirates Golf Club. My wife and I have decided to leave the UAE after almost four years and will return to Canada where we will live in Victoria, British Columbia.

Working at EGC has been an amazing experience for me as it has given me an opportunity to combine both of my passions…cooking and golfing. I have had a chance to meet many of our amazing members at the Club and I have even been fortunate to be able to play a round with some of you.

La Paz Golf ClubLa Paz Golf Club in Bolivia is considered to be the highest course in the world. The course is located from 3,277 to 3,343 metres above sea level, so bring your oxygen tanks! The course was founded in 1912 and is one of the most prominent institutions in Bolivian Society.

Cape Kidnappers Golf CourseCape Kidnappers Golf Course is located in Hawkes Bay Province in New Zealand and is considered by many as the most intriguing golf course in the world. Not only is it an amazing looking golf course, but it is extremely challenging as well. Players have to deal with deep gullies and cliffs as they navigate through the course. By the looks of it, you had better keep your cart on the path.

The Merapi courseThe Merapi course is located underneath Mount Merapi in Indonesia which is an active volcano and a very active one at that. In June of 2006 the volcano erupted and killed two people. Back in 1930 it had erupted and killed more than 1,300 people. In October of 2010, because of it’s high activity level, the Indonesian Government placed it on a high alert status and ordered people living nearby to evacuate. Four years later and people are still playing golf everyday at the Merapi Golf Course.
