WELCOME TO BLACKHEATH… 2013 was a hugely busy and successful year for the club both on and off the pitch, and this year promises to be equally exciting.

Having challenged strongly for the I’Anson Cup Division 1 title last season, our 1st XI is again shaping up well, with new captain Pete Melhuish just one of the young players who have come through our junior system over the past few years and now form the majority of the team. Meanwhile our 2nd and 3rd XIs, who also had excellent seasons in 2013, are also being strengthened by our former colts and will be looking for promotion from Divisions 3 and 6 respectively.

Sunday cricket also continues to thrive, with Ben Hodges taking on most of the captaincy duties this summer in the absence of Harry Giles. Aside from the usual wide range of fixtures to suit all abilities, this year sees us return to the National Village Knock-Out competition. We will also be hosting a major charity match against a team from the Royal National Children’s Foundation including at least a couple of former England players.

Our junior section continues to go from strength to strength, as we field no fewer than12 league teams this summer, including for the first time an U8 league side, and a girls’ section. Our head coach Chris Poil and club professional Louis Lynch will be supported by the usual team of club coaches and young players including this year 20 year old Australian Paul McRae, whom we welcome from Western Suburbs District CC in Sydney – one of the leading clubs in Australia. Paul will also be adding a very useful leg-spin option to our 1st XI attack.

The committee has been busy over the winter months and you will notice a few other changes this season – including various improvements to the ground and pavilion, such as new run-ups in the nets. There will also be a greatly improved catering operation under the supervision of Pavilion Manager Terry Marter, including regular evening meals on Saturdays through June and July.

You will find more details of all this and more in the pages of this handbook, as well as full fixture lists for all our teams. I’ll look forward to seeing you in the course of what I’m sure will be another fantastic season.

Nick Harrison

SENIOR CRICKET

SATURDAY CRICKET

Blackheath will again be fielding 3 teams in the I’Anson League this season: the 1st XI in Division 1, the 2nd XI in Division 3 and the 3rd XI in Division 6.

Founded in Grayshott, Hampshire in January 1901, the league draws its member clubs from Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex. It is believed to be the oldest continuously-operating village cricket league in England. Many of its members have fine village grounds – all are within 45 minutes drive of Blackheath.

League matches are on Saturday afternoons between April and September. They generally start at 1pm and under competition rules last up to 90 overs, of which the team batting first may take up to 48. Full information about the league may be found on the league website at http://ia.play-cricket.com.

SUNDAY CRICKET

Aside from league cricket on Saturdays, Blackheath fields at least one and sometimes two teams every Sunday during the season. On Sundays when two teams are fielded, and depending on the opposition, one of the teams may be designated a development team, giving the opportunity for some of our older colts to have a taste of adult cricket.

The standard of opposition on Sundays varies considerably, from relaxed and entertaining matches against friendly local rivals, to highly competitive fixtures against very strong wandering sides. This means that on Sundays we are able to accommodate cricketers of almost any standard; we take pride in the fact that everyone is welcome at Blackheath.

EVENING AND MIDWEEK CRICKET

Aside from our regular weekend fixtures, we play short knock-out matches on some Tuesday evenings and occasional longer midweek fixtures. In addition, we play every day during our cricket week (the first full week in August).

SENIOR MEMBERSHIP

Various categories of senior membership are available at different rates, with a very substantial discount for players under 21. Social membership is also available. For full details please visit the club website (www.blackheathcc.co.uk), or contact our senior membership secretary, Graham Webb, on 01483 892801.

JUNIOR CRICKET

LEAGUE CRICKET

In 2014 we will be running junior league teams at all age groups from U8s to U15s (for the first time there is a structured league programme for the U8 age group). There will be 12 teams in all: 7 in the West Surrey Youth Cricket League and 5 in the friendly Gladys Chitty League, giving the opportunity for everyone to play in matches of the appropriate standard. There is no league cricket for our youngest squad (U7s), however we generally arrange one or two friendly matches for this age group. Matches are generally played on Sunday mornings.

Whilst all squads get the opportunity to play at least some matches at our main ground, for reasons of space many of our junior home matches are played elsewhere: this season games will be played at Wonersh, Duke of Kent School and Urnfield as well as Blackheath: see page 14.

GIRLS’ CRICKET

For the first time this year, we will be running a separate girls’ section, which will be led by Sharon Eyers (formerly of Surrey Cricket and now of Middlesex CCC). This will be open to girls in school years 2 and 3 (U7s and U8s) and will train at the same time as the boys’ U7s and U8s squads – i.e. from 5.30pm to 6.30pm each Friday. There will also be one or two friendly matches if possible.

COACHING SESSIONS

Weekly indoor coaching sessions have been running since January, however the main coaching in the summer takes place on Friday evenings from 5pm onwards. There are 2 main coaching sessions: the first session is for the U10s and younger (U10s and U9s from 5pm to 6.30pm; U8s and U7s from 5.30pm -6.30pm); the second session is for the U11s and older (from 6.30pm to 8pm). These are very popular and busy evenings: for further details of arrangements see page 10.

All our coaching sessions will be run by qualified coaches. We currently have around 20 qualified club coaches, including 8 UKCC level 2 coaches and one level 3 coach - our head coach, Chris Poil. We will also be assisted this year not only by our regular professional, Louis Lynch, but also by our overseas player Paul McRae, from Western Suburbs District CC in Sydney. In addition, there will be a team of our home grown young players helping with coaching sessions.

Each Friday the bar will be open from 5pm there will be a BBQ from 6pm, for which we will be seeking volunteers for assistance.

Aside from the main Friday evening session, there will be squad coaching on other weekday nights: for further details, please ask your squad manager. There will also be the opportunity for juniors to have individual professional coaching. If you are interested in this, contact Nick Harrison at [email protected].

JUNIOR DISABILITY SECTION

For several years now Blackheath has been running a junior disability section in partnership with Gosden House School in Bramley and Surrey Cricket. In the coming season this will be running on Wednesday afternoons. We hope also to be running a separate disability session on Thursday evenings. Further details of this will follow shortly.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Aside from our regular activities, we are intending to arrange a repeat of last year’s “junior cricket week” at the end of July – further details to follow. In addition, we will again be organising a trip for our junior section to a T20 game at the Oval. If the opportunity arises, we will also take a party to demonstrate their Kwik cricket skills on the outfield at lunch during the Oval test match, as in 2013 (when they also provided the guard of honour for the England and Australia teams).

MEMBERSHIP

At the time of writing, most squads are already full for this season. There are still a few places left in some age groups, but please check with our junior membership secretary, Sue Brocksom, before attempting to register.

This year all registration must be done online via the members’ section on the club’s website: http://www.blackheathcc.co.uk/. Subscriptions this year are £90 for U9s and above (£60 for second and subsequent siblings) and £60 for the U8 and U7 age groups, including the girls’ section (£40 for second and subsequent siblings).

FRIDAY EVENINGS

Friday evenings can be very busy at Blackheath and to ensure things work properly we ask everyone to follow a few simple rules …

Please make sure your child is signed in with the appropriate coach at the start of the practice sessions.

Unless your child is aged 12 or older, we ask you either to remain at the club during the practice sessions or to find another adult who is willing to take responsibility for your child if necessary, and to ensure that the relevant squad manager is told who that adult is.

Please keep any children you bring to the club who are not being coached under close supervision and out of the areas where coaching is taking place. If an unsupervised child wanders into a practice area they can easily be hurt by a stray cricket ball.

Please do not temporarily extract your child from a coaching session, for example to feed them. If necessary, please give your child a snack and a drink before the coaching starts.

Please do not leave litter and ensure that your children do not do so either.

Generally, please be patient and bear in mind that the club is run largely by volunteers who put in an enormous amount of time and effort to make things work. If you have time to lend a hand yourself, it will always be much appreciated!

TRAFFIC AND PARKING

Blackheath is a quiet residential village with single track roads and limited parking. When visiting the club either for matches or on Friday evenings ...

If you can share transport, please do so to reduce the number of cars coming to the village.

Please drive slowly and carefully at all times. There is a 20 mph speed limit in the village and a 5mph speed limit on the track up to the club.

When arriving at the ground by car on Friday evenings, please follow the directions of our traffic marshals, and park only where directed. When the club car park is full you will be directed first to the Villagers Pub Car Park, then to the public car park at the top of the village. There is also a further public car park off Littleford Lane within a short walk of the ground.

If you have no alternative but to park on Blackheath Lane, please avoid blocking driveways or damaging verges.

When leaving at the end of the evening, please do so as quietly as possible.

GROUND LOCATIONS

All 1st XI, 2nd XI and Sunday XI home matches are played at the club’s main ground at Blackheath. 3rd XI home matches are played at Urnfield. Junior home matches are played at Blackheath, Urnfield, Wonersh Sports Club, and Duke of Kent School.

DIRECTIONS TO BLACKHEATH (GU4 8RB)

From A3 southbound…leave the A3 just south of the M25, signposted Ockham, Ripley and Send. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit and drive through Ripley. At the next roundabout take the 1st exit on the A247 towards W.Clandon and Dorking. Drive through West Clandon. At the traffic lights go straight on towards Dorking on the A25. After 2 miles you reach dual carriageway. Take the 1st right turn (after 500 yards) onto the A248 towards Godalming and Albury. Drive through Albury to Chilworth, where the railway station is on your left and The Percy Arms is on your right. Turn left here across the level crossing and continue for 1 mile to Blackheath. Turn left at the crossroads and after about 50 yards take the right fork up a small track where you should see a sign marked "cricket".

From central Guildford…take the A281 south out of Guildford towards Horsham. After about 2 miles you cross a railway bridge in Shalford. Immediately after this, turn left towards Dorking on the A248. After 1 mile, ignore the left turn to Albury and Dorking and continue on the B2128 towards Cranleigh. After about ½ mile, just after entering Wonersh, take the next left turn, signposted to Blackheath and ‘Barnett Hill Conference Centre’. Follow the lane up for about 1 mile until you reach Blackheath. At the crossroads carry straight on up the hill and after about 50 yards take the right fork up a small track where you should see a sign marked "cricket".

FACILITIES AND CATERING

THE TANGLEY PAVILION

Blackheath’s new pavilion, known as The Tangley Pavilion, was constructed over the winter of 2012-13 at a cost of around £400,000 and opened in May 2013.

The exterior of the new building is modelled on a sketch dated from 1896 by the Arts & Crafts architect, Charles Harrison Townsend, who designed a number of other houses in Blackheath, as well as the church and the village hall. However, the interior is a fully modern one, with a large clubroom enjoying an elevated view over the magnificent ground. The pavilion’s facilities include a superb bar, fully equipped kitchen, large screen TV, pool table and wifi.

HIRING THE PAVILION

The Tangley Pavilion is not available for general public hire, however members of the club are able to hire it for suitable private functions consistent with planning restrictions. For further information, please contact the club secretary.

CATERING

In 2014, the club’s catering arrangements have been put on a new footing under the supervision of our Pavilion Manager, Terry Marter. Aside from the regular Friday BBQs and Saturday and Sunday teas, there will be hot food served on Saturday evenings from the beginning of June until mid-August (as well as, of course, every evening during cricket week). There will also be coffee and bacon rolls served at all junior matches at Blackheath on Sunday mornings during the season (i.e. until the end of July).

CLUB KIT

Club kit is available from MJM Sports (formerly Island Sports), including club shirts, caps, trousers, training tops and shorts. The kit is good quality and excellent value, and all colts are politely requested to wear a club shirt when playing in representative matches. (All kit other than a club shirt is optional, though caps are also strongly recommended.) Players can have their surname printed on the back of their club shirts for an additional charge of just £2.

Orders should be placed directly with MJM Sports at the club’s online shop: http://www.island-sports.co.uk/club-shops/blackheath-cc.html.
