Club Development Planning

Planning ahead helps the club develop. A development plan provides a framework for

this development. A development plan can open up potential

funding opportunities to allow you to secure finances to put the plan into action.

A development plan can engage many member of the club as well as parents, spouses, friends, etc.

Club Development Planning

It’s not essential but…

A planned and co-ordinated approach to club development ensures:1.Everyone knows the starting point, where they are going and how they are going to get there.2.It brings together everyone in the club with an interest and a role to play.3.The best use of resources, avoiding duplication of effort.

What? How? When?

Keep it simple! It should NOT be long and complicated.

Simply answer these questions:

1.Where are we now?2.Where do we want to be?3.How are we going to get there?

Club Development Planning

Know your starting point! Have a clear, agreed vision of your future

destination. Break the vision down into specific aims or

goals. Set achievable timescales. Keep it simple! Involve the right people and encourage

everyone to get involved and own the plan.

Planning Principles

Use the plan as a management tool to guide its implementation – don’t create a long boring document that is going to gather dust on a shelf!

Check progress to ensure you are on course, but don’t be afraid to make changes to the plan as it comes to life – some things may happen more quickly than you had originally planned (or vice versa).

There are 6 simple steps to consider when developing a plan:

The Planning Process – Step 1

The fastest way is often for one person to write it – this almost always leads to failure!

Its success depends on many people bringing it to life!

Involve those with specific expertise. Who else might need to be involved?

NGB? Local sports DO? Schools?

Carry out an audit of your club: How many coaches do we have and at what

level? How many volunteers do we have? What is our capacity and can we increase

this? How close to capacity are we? What is the future potential of the club?

Step 3Where are you going?Agreeing a shared vision of the future.

Step 4How are you going to get there?Setting aims and objectives.

Develop a clear vision, for example:“Our vision is that by the end of 2016 the club will provide quality sport sessions for young children through a progressive programme that provides recreational sport or develops a level of performance for entry into a Centre of Excellence”

The rest of the plan unfolds from this vision so it is important that everyone shares it.
