Coconut Boules

Our well travelled CPC couple of Jean and

Barry enjoying a game of 'Coconut Boules'

on Nanuya Island - Fiji. In this image Jean

is about to throw not a metal boule but a furry coconut into what looks like a

quicksand piste. When you are desperate for a game of petanque some improvisation

is required. Jean tells me it was more of a

plop, plop, lob game with no rolling of the

coconuts at all.....

Now that Spring is in full bloom ladies can take advantage of Weston Park at its best on

Wednesday mornings. Deciduous trees are budding into verdant greens and the bluebells can be seen in the neighbouring woodland. The

park is peaceful and serene in the morning light. Players agree this is a particularly special

location for morning play.

Ladies, if you have not previously joined us, you are most welcome to turn up from 9:30 am

(9:00 am summertime) for a few games followed by late morning coffee at the Yacht

Club.

I know, you hear about it, and you see it, but it doesn't

quite register. You need to start thinking seriously about putting some teams together folks. I am looking for a minimum of 5 Female and 5 Male teams to make this a roaring success, anything above that is a bonus. We have the numbers in the club so no excuses. So far I have only a few teams locked in. The deadline for teams to register is the 15th and the tournament is on the 22nd. Talk to a likely partner NOW, lock them in and then register with Donna or Ivo OSTYN and let's get this thing 'Crakin'

Thanks

Thanks Jean and Barry for

participating in the Don's Doubles at Randwick, Sydney, and by doing so supporting our friend, Gary Hosie in his efforts to promote grass roots petanque. Politically and morally it was a good thing that the CPC was involved all be it with just you 2. We must try to participate in more interstate events if we possibly can, but let's face it folks we have so much going on locally plus we are such a travelling mob it's a wonder we have time for anything else.

FSM First Sunday of the Month 2017

~ This competition has concluded and here are the winners;

~ The Girls ~

Catherine was the winner with Adele in second position

~ The Boys ~

Sebastian was winner with Mark C. in second position

Special thanks to

Rhys for looking after the score sheets.

This event will recommence in 2018

Tuggeranong picking up a tad! It's the usual culprits of Heike, Hanan, Antoine and Ivo that

form the 'hardcore' at Tuggers, but lately we are receiving a sprinkling of others sampling the delights of this beautiful venue. I guess a dose of warmer weather and a refusal to let this venue slide has done the trick. Gary, Annette, Jean and Bazza have all dropped by for a pick me up game Saturday arvo! Antoine tells me he will start play at 3:00pm in summer, so hats on and sunscreen. Anyway, we shall carry on!

Wollongong 2018 is just around the corner. Start thinking partners, start playing together, use the OGD as a try out!

Trophies presented at the AGM

Capital Petanque gain place in Community Rewards Program 2018

Great News!

Your Committee has received some very welcome news! We were advised mid-year that all participants in the Community

Rewards Program would need to reapply. A detailed submission was required demonstrating how previous monies were used, benefits to the community/members of our current activities and what we would spend any future monies gained under the program. This would be assessed against a number of criteria. Last week your Committee was delighted to receive correspondence from Ian Mackay, CEO of the Canberra Southern Cross Club, advising that CPC’s application was successful! A huge thank you to the Canberra Southern Cross Club for their generous inclusion of our Club in the 2017/18 Community Rewards Program.

What will we do with the money?

As you know, when you present your Canberra Southern Cross membership card for swiping when purchasing any food or beverages our Club receives 10% back to the club paid quarterly. To date CPC has received $2,278, which has been greatly beneficial as we establish ourselves in Weston Park. Going into the future, the activities that will be supported under the Community Rewards Program are:

- membership affordability

- new equipment and replacement of worn equipment

- coaching and training

- paint and storage in the new storeroom

- A- frame poster printing and lamination to welcome people to come and try

- maintenance of the petanque ground with any required upgrade of fine gravel

- savings to establish seating, shade and a water bubbler at the petanque ground

Members Action Please

So, what does our participation in the Community Rewards Program mean for you our loyal members? NEW MEMBERS especially please take note. Follow these steps:

- ensure that your Canberra Southern Cross Club membership is current

- register your card against the Capital Petanque Club under the Community Rewards Program. This can now be done electronically at the Canberra Yacht Club office.

- swipe your membership card at the cash register every time you purchase food or beverage at any of the Southern Cross Clubs across the ACT. This will provide us with a 10% of spend grant back to CPC.

- come to social drinks and debrief following play on Sunday afternoon or Wednesday morning. Your Committee also uses the club for committee meetings and dinners and for organised dinners when other clubs visit. We are most fortunate to be able to use the Canberra Yacht Club as an alternative to the great cost of establishing and maintaining club rooms, in addition to

Want to do more?

1. Ask family and friends to register their Canberra Southern Cross membership cards against Capital Petanque. They too can benefit our club.

2. Take any opportunity to use the Canberra Yacht Club (or other Southern Cross Club) when entertaining friends, meeting friends for drinks or organising dinner or meeting events for your other interests. Such events can provide a good boost to our coffers.

Don’t forget that all members are invited (ongoing) to drinks at the Canberra Yacht Club following play on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday mornings. And SWIPE, SWIPE, SWIPE!

Should you have any enquiries about the Community Rewards Program please contact Robyn Cooper.

Boulebelles on the loose Capital Petanque AGM & 3rd Birthday Celebration!

It is hard to believe it is now 3 years since Capital Petanque established a home ground at Weston Park! Time to celebrate!

As with the successful events held over the past two years, we will be holding an AGM and CPC birthday celebration lunch prior to club play.

~ Details as follows ~

Date: Sunday, 5 November 2018

Location: Weston Park (under the shade tree adjacent to the piste)

Time: 12:00 pm (AGM is expected to be a short meeting followed immediately by a shared lunch)

Committee nominations: You will receive by email an agenda for the AGM and a nomination form for committee membership. All positions are declared vacant and a couple of existing committee members have already indicated they will not be nominating - so please consider working as part of an effective and fun team to take our Club forward. Nominations must be provided to the Secretary (Sebastian) seven (7) days prior to the AGM. Organisation: Heike and Robyn will be organising your contributions for the shared lunch. They have again developed a spreadsheet and will now start speaking to you about your contribution. Please consider whether it will be savoury, salad or sweet and register with Heike or Robyn. As in the past we will seek to organise a well-balanced lunch. Jim will again be the ‘music man’ providing delightfully appropriate French tunes to really set the mood. What to bring: Please bring your own folding chair, drinks, hat, sunscreen and smile. If you have special medical dietary requirements please bring something you can eat. Enquiries or registration of contributions for lunch can be made to Heike or Robyn. Enquiries regarding nominations to Seb. Article; CPC member Robyn

The Wollongong Tournament Explained! You may have begun to sense building excitement or hear members mention “Wollongong”. They are indeed referring to the

Wollongong Petanque Tournament held annually in late January. Now is the time to start planning. For new members or those who have not participated in competition outside of Weston Park, your committee thought it could be useful to provide you with the ‘low down’. What?

The Wollongong Tournament is a two day event hosted by the Petanque Club of Wollongong. The competition is held over a weekend - Saturday afternoon from the outcome of which teams are graded in the first league ‘Principale’ and the remainder of team the ‘Consulante’. Play on Sunday is therefore played in these two grades with prizes for both competitions. The play is also divided into Mens and Womens, noting that a mixed couple will play in the Mens competition (don’t worry this is acceptable and common). Where? The Wollongong German Club located at 636A Northcliffe Drive, Kembla Grange NSW on the southern end of Wollongong. When? The weekend closest to Australia Day. To be confirmed by the Wollongong Petanque Club shortly. How?

Capital Petanque Club does not formally organise a team to attend. However, detailed advice will be provided in the Boulesheet as soon as it is available. Also, Ivo is a Wollongong tournament veteran, so have a chat to him. It is individual members responsibility to ask around for a playing partner, organise travel and accommodation and ensure they take their boules and playing equipment, CPC club shirt, wide brimmed hat, comfortable sport shoes, sunscreen and water bottle. Food and drink is available for purchase in the German Club, as well as a dinner organised by Wollongong Petanque (optional) on Saturday night and an awards ceremony is held in the German Club to close the tournament on Sunday. You are encouraged to stay for the awards ceremony, as it is a lovely way to cheer on winners from our club and others, and socialise with new friends made over the weekend. Words of Advice; Everyone is welcome!

The Wollongong tournament provides for players of all standards. There is no need for any anxiety about this being ‘competition'. People are friendly and encouraging and you will make friends that you will encounter at other competitions or can visit at their home clubs on your travels. Canberra usually fields a large contingent of both experienced and lesser experienced players, who attend for the fun and challenge of playing with players outside our club. Those that have attended would agree that it is a lovely opportunity to meet others who enjoy the sport and it provides a goal to work towards. Yes, some of us spring into action a month or two in advance seeking someone to play with and practice more frequently and with more gusto than usual. How to get a partner.

Just ask around the club members for anyone looking for a partner for Wollongong. This is a common activity as we all start out without a partner and need to secure one. If you need assistance finding a partner please speak to Ivo or another a committee member, who will assist. A Canberra presence.

While the Club leaves it to individuals to organise the details of their attendance as outlined above, we do have a strong presence with good attendance, a club marquee and banner at the event, and our blue and white t-shirts making a definite splash. We are easily identifiable and the host club really appreciates our efforts to attend. CPC players enjoy a good reputation as fair and fun to play against and as friendly, sociable people. Other activities The weekend provides opportunities outside of the tournament for enjoyment with fellow club members. People usually stay either close to the German Club or on the beach in the central Wollongong area, where an early morning beach front walk or swim can be enjoyed. In organising your accommodation you may wish to book a hotel or organise to share an apartment with other Canberra players. Members also informally catch up to share meals or a drink in the evening, usually depending on location of stay - so ask about this with others attending. If you have a partner, who doesn’t play petanque, they too can come along and enjoy some of the local attractions and time spent socialising. Consider coming the day before the event to make a true mini-break of the weekend. Who else is going?

Once the tournament dates are confirmed, Ivo will ask for a list of teams intending to play in the tournament and will share this with those attending. This assists with any planning discussions. Warning

As the tournament is held around a public holiday and it is usually the last weekend of the school holidays, it is advisable to book your accommodation early. If you make your bookings soon after dates are confirmed, this will allow you to have choices in accommodation and it may also allow you to secure an early bird discount. Article; CPC member Robyn

You need a club shirt Our Club Shirts can be ordered from,

'Working Gear', in Fyshwick, 51 - 55 - Kembla St. (Shop 5 Kembla Court)

The shop orders the shirts. Women need to remember that the sizes are Men sizes in large, medium and small. The embroidery is done in the shop. They have our club templates stored on their computer. It may help to take a club shirt along.

Cost depends on the extent of embroidery. Hanan has only the front of the shirt embroidered not the back. Waiting time around 2 weeks.

Funky dude yo bro!

Issa ALKATEB, the CPC's youngest member, no kidding, Ahmed insisted in joining up his first born son + wifey to the CPC club, and who am I to say NO to that! If Issa junior takes after his dad then he will have a devastating attacking game in only a few years time. Wish you were still in Canberra Ahmed, hope things are going well for you up North, Cheers from all your CPC mates!

At long Last......... The CPC has taken over the storage area of the new sunshade structure - ex. toilet block refurbishment. The committee is now in the process of fitting out this space with some necessary wall patching, a lick of paint and then placing our purpose built (Simplicity Kitchens) boule storage cabinet. Still some way to go but we should have this space up and running in the next weeks. Thanks to Jim, Richard & Ivo for kicking this thing along!

What's next.....What's next.....What's next.....What's next.....???? The CPC committee continues to talk with local government to further improve our facility at Weston Park. The next things to expect (in the fullness of time!) in other words when funding is available, will be seating and a water bubbler, it's not 'If', but 'when'.....

Standard ACT Parks water bubbler and typical park bench. Incidentally, the bench alone costs about $3000 per unit, we will possibly have 2 or 3

Having Fun On Wednesday 7 Boule Belles played in

glorious weather, then put away their boules for lunch and flowers at Floriade. And of course plenty of talk and laughter. Thinking about it later I reflected that the club is practising what it preaches – the idea is to have fun! Two new Boule Belles, Pru and Margaret's remarks that they really enjoy their Wednesday morning games and coffee with friendly women reinforced what’s so positive about our club. Play is fun, play is friendly. During a game at Don’s Doubles at Randwick I was urged to encourage our club to put on a tournament with prize money large enough to attract a sizable number of interstate players. Yet, during another game I was told that Petanque membership is declining in Sydney and that the Lake Macquarie club will soon close because numbers have dwindled to just 4. Yet our membership is growing. Enough said.

COACHING BACK AGAIN SOON I have just spoken with CPC member, Patrice from Alliance Francaisse

Canberra and when asked if he would do some coaching sessions for us,

his response was, "OUI". We have had Mark S. do some coaching for us

in the past which was beneficial for us all. I am hoping that both Mark S. and Patrice can provide us with a string of coaching sessions when they are free to do so. Not every Sunday but regularly and well advertised. Sessions will be held most likely on a Sunday at 1:00pm leading into social club play which starts at 2:00pm. This is exciting stuff as both Patrice and Mark have years of accumulated petanque knowledge which we can download from these fellows. Carry on chaps and many thanks. I will keep the 'tribe' posted on dates.

Back to school everyone!

G’day members:

• What a difference the warmer weather

makes. The number of members turning up to play is on the rise, and that is on weekdays as well as on weekends, and there is an increase in the walk-by traffic at Weston Park with lots of people stopping to have a look at us playing. Our membership numbers are growing but there is always room for more, so if you have a friend(s) who you think might enjoy pétanque, please bring them along.

• As you will read elsewhere, the inaugural

“First Sunday of the Month” competition has been completed, and a very big congratulations to Sebastian and Catherine who were the champions this year, and to Mark Cooper and Adele who were the second place-getters. Special thanks to the Smith family for their assistance with the FSM competition – Rhys for filling in the score-sheets, and Smitty for doing an audit of the spreadsheet that I used to tally the results. Smitty has come up with a much simpler spreadsheet format for next year. Our final monthly FSM was held on Sunday October 1st, and the top-scoring lady was Annette, and somehow I got lucky and top-scored for the blokes (On that day)

• Thanks to those members who have been

helping with the working bees on our new storeroom in Weston Park, and a special thanks to Richard for co-coordinating the work. The storeroom should be ready for us to move into in under a week. The Alexander’s are looking forward to reclaiming some garage space!!

• Don’t forget that our AGM and our Weston

Park anniversary bash is on November 5th.

• Finally I want to say how much I am looking

forward to playing in the Ostyn Gender Doubles (OGD) competition on October 22nd. Don’t forget to let Ivo and Donna know who you will be playing with, and your team name.

Cheers and have fun on the piste, Jim (CPC President)

Just in case you are not getting enough!

Thanks to Richard we gained access to Simplicity Kitchens, who free of charge provided us with the materials, pre cut, to make our boule cabinet for our store room. I am recommending them to all my clients!

Our neighbour, Jason, has kindly provided prizes for the OGD event. That's mighty neighbourly of him and worth a visit or two to his premises in my book. I am taking my granddaughter for a train ride soon! Lots of new things happening at his place.
