countryside and across busy modern road-ways – to Sullivan Station at 152 Street and 64 Avenue in Surrey and back again.

For safety reasons, the car must stop at every crossing so the conductor can get out to physically verify that all motor traffic is stopped.

“It’s just to be sure nobody in a car is going to ignore the signals and drive on through,” Aubert said.

The City of Surrey is installing signs alert-ing motorists at crossings, including on Highway 10 and at the 152 Street intersec-tion.

This past Sunday, the crew members who are operating the weekend passenger ser-vice took a number of training runs between Cloverdale and Sullivan to ensure everything will run smoothly once operations begin.

The official opening of Cloverdale Station

is this Saturday, June 22. The station platform will be filled with dignitaries including May-or Dianne Watts and Surrey city councillors, Frank Butzelaar, president of the Southern Railway of B.C., and Steven Higginbottom from B.C. Hydro will help officially open the replica station and the line, followed by the ceremonial inaugural passenger run.

The first full day of operations is the fol-lowing day, with the electric-powered rail car leaving Cloverdale Station on the hour, starting at 10 a.m. The last train will leave Cloverdale at 3 p.m. It’s about 45 minutes round-trip. (Note: There are no stops at Sul-livan this summer.)

The Re-enactors – professional actors por-traying personalities from Surrey’s past – will be on hand, lending an air of authenticity to the festivities.

From here on, the line will operate passen-ger service Saturdays, Sundays and holidays to Thanksgiving.

The car seats 56. There are no reservations; it’s first-come, first-serve. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under.

Aubert said he expects between 300 to 400 visitors to turn out on June 23, but admits it’s difficult to know precisely.

“We don’t know what the demand is. It’s just like any other train – you turn up at the station!”

Launching the demonstration passenger project is not the end of the journey – the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society wants to one day extend the service all the way to the Skytrain station at Scott Road, opening up a world of heritage tourism potential.

The original Cloverdale Station was a hub for the BCER, or Interurban, an electric rail-way that operated for more than 40 years. In its heyday, three trains a day ran between Chilliwack and Vancouver, through Clover-dale, offering rapid transit to a growing sub-urban population.

The FVHRS formed with the dream of re-turning a working BCER Interurban to the original track, still used to transport freight.

The society’s push for a heritage rail re-vival gained momentum this summer when the FVHRS moved its operations from Sul-livan Station to Cloverdale, and launched a sponsorship campaign and volunteer drive for new members to work on the opera-tional side as ticket takers, conductors and more. The sponsorship campaign to build Cloverdale Station attracted nearly 30 spon-sors to the construction project, which broke ground in November.

The entire project is in partnership with the City of Surrey and the Southern Railway of B.C., with the assistance of B.C. Hydro. For more information, visit fvhrs.org.– The Cloverdale Reporter has created an interactive

timeline. You’ll find it online at www.cloverdalere-porter.com.

Hillcrest Elementary is hosting its annual Family Fun Night this Friday, and organizers are asking everyone to bring along gently-used shoes.

Fun night activities include a petting zoo, pony rides, a giant slide, concession and barbecue. A silent auc-tion and raffle are also planned.

Admission is free, but wristbands for games and activities will be on sale at $12 for school-aged children and $7 for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Proceeds will go towards a new play-ground for Hillcrest

Elementary. The school’s Parent Advi-sory Council hopes a new playground can be installed over the summer.

“It’s a huge event that seems to get more exciting each year,” says Kim Baker, Hillcrest Elementary PAC fund-raising chair.

Shoes for adults and children are being collected as part of the event. The donations are for Ruben’s Shoes, a project that sends foot-wear to people in devel-oping nations. Ruben’s Shoes was started by Kelly Strongitharm, co-founder of Three Sixty Financial Group. It’s

named after a boy who lives in the Dominican Republic whom she’d sponsored through World Vision.

Her goal is to collect 10,000 shoes by fall.

So far, parent Jennifer Orchiston has collected more than 300 shoes towards the project. She’s working to have a truckload more in time for Hillcrest’s Family Fun Night.

Rugged sandals, running shoes, rain or gum boots, and dress shoes (without heels) are all needed. Drop off donations at Hillcrest Elemetary, located at 18599 65 Avenue.

The event runs from

4 to 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

To the editor;Violence against women is a worldwide

problem. Within some cultures, it is the ac-cepted and unquestioned norm. A er immi-grating to Canada, many women remain iso-lated; unaware of their rights and the services available to protect them.

Last month I was getting my hair done. During the laughter and gossip characteristic of us African women, I questioned one wom-an about her bruised face. She chuckled, as if it should have been obvious, “My husband did it.’’ My hairdresser laughingly responded, “Well that is nothing, when I was pregnant,

my boyfriend broke my nose, kicked me in the stomach and then had sex with me.”

is was greeted with knowing laughter. e conversation continued with a sense of joking competitiveness as to who had been most se-verely beaten. It broke my heart.

In studying to become a new Canadian, I was proud that my new country was a place where, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights; therefore should act towards one another in a spirit of broth-erhood,” as declared by the Universal Declara-tion of Human Rights.

But because of cultural isolation, many im-

migrant women are unaware of their Canadian rights or are fearful of the inevitable reprisals should they choose to claim these rights.

Living in Canada has not decreased or elim-inated the violence heaped upon these women. It begs the question: In Canada, is violence against immigrant women the accepted and unquestioned norm?

Until we all are ready to acknowledge its ex-istence and stand on guard for these women, the answer is a shamefully resounding, “Yes!”

COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Fi een years ago, Ken Kras-niko of the Cloverdale Com-munity Association was asked by the City of Surrey’s Parks and Recreation department to be part of a steering committee on how Mound Farm, a unique mound south of Highway 10 between 168 and 178 Streets, might be used for public use.

He made the following presen-tation to the city’s parks and recre-ation committee earlier this spring and shared it with e Reporter in response to our June 6 story, “Grant helps Mound Farm Park Prepare for Visitors.”

e mound itself is an island of green surrounded by at agricul-tural lands. Due to its interesting geological formation and signi -cant tree cover, it is considered

a landmark in the surrounding Cloverdale area. It is covered by a stand of about 1,000 mature trees, including Douglas rs, western red cedars and big leaf maples. e views both to and from the Mound are equally spectacular.

I said “yes” to being part of this steering committee and a er several committee meetings and three public meetings at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School, a preferred master plan option was selected and nalized.

While protecting the existing stand of trees, it shows pedes-trian/bicycle trails on and around the 14-hectare mound. Picnicking facilities would be created, tak-ing advantage of views from the mound.

 e at agricultural land would

remain as farmland. To work with the steering committee, a consulting rm was hired and was responsible for preparing the Mound Farm Park Master Plan.

With the master plan in place and the city o -cially dedicating the mound as a park in 1996, I thought that the city would de-velop the trail sys-tem in short order. In fact, I felt that there had been some urgency to gather a steer-ing committee and complete this master plan. at was not the case, and a er 15 years without any development, we the CCA are here asking this commit-tee to dust o this report and to develop Mound Farm Park. is

would create a city-wide amenity providing passive recreational activities for all ages.

As you know, Cloverdale and area has seen tremendous growth that will continue for many years.

So, it’s time that the-Mound be developed for park use, not just for Cloverdale, but for all Surrey com-munities to enjoy. I hope we don’t have to

wait very long for this to become a reality and therefore are asking this committee to establish a time-line as to when the mound will be opened for public use.

Points of view

Grateful to the ReidsWe will sadly miss Bill Reid.  We so loved and admired Bill and Marion Reid that we chose

them as Godparents to our daughter. Our daughter was unable to attend the

funeral because she lives in California and the passing was so sudden.

She sent me a note today and said she was so very happy that we chose Bill as her godfather and she is saddened that she cannot be there with the family.

She is so very grateful that he was in her life and we too are grateful.

We wish Marion and the family peace to bring them comfort and courage to face the days ahead.

Trophy memorializes boxing officialBy Jennifer LangAn amateur boxing official, former

coach and long-time member of the Cloverdale Legion is being remem-bered through the establishment of a new trophy being awarded for the first time at this Sunday’s tournament at Branch 6.

The Jim Gallagher Memorial Tro-phy has been established to honour the many contributions the late Clo-verdale resident made to amateur box-ing in B.C. and acrosss Canada.

Gallagher, who passed away last year at 78, is a 2013 inductee to the B.C. Amateur Boxing Hall of Fame, and he was named Boxing B.C.’s Official of the Year in 2011,

says John O’Shea, one of the organiz-ers of this Sunday’s tournament and past president of Boxing Canada.

A founding partner of Gallagher Bros. Contracting Ltd., Gallagher was a long-serving coach at the Clover-dale Boxing Club.

“He was one of the small band of people who brought a Liverpool box-ing team here in 1976, and the inter-national relationship has continued ever since,” said O’Shea, who, like Gallagher, originally hailed from Liv-erpool.

Gallagher was an important boxing official both nationally, and provincially.

“He was a true volunteer,” said O’Shea. He was

a judge at amateur boxing events for more than 40 years.

“He’s judged at thousands and thousands of am-ateur boxing shows,” he said. “He’s been a judge at every amateur ring in the Lower Mainland.”

His community contributions include serving as a past volunteer with the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association.

The inaugural recipient of the Jim Gallagher Memorial Trophy is Carol Skanks, who’s remained a tireless volunteer with the Maple Ridge Boxing Club into her 80s.

“She’s an unsung hero,” O’Shea said. The amateur boxing tournament starts at 1:30

p.m. at the Cloverdale Legion, at 17567 57 Avenue, on June 23.

Eight bouts are expected.

Hayer set to jump into federal politicsBy Brenda AndersonA former Surrey

MLA is hoping to rep-resent Cloverdale and the City of Langley in Ottawa in 2015.

Dave Hayer, who represented Surrey-Tynehead for 12 years, from 2001-13, will seek the Conservative nomination for the proposed new riding of Cloverdale-West Lang-ley, ahead of the next federal election.

Hayer told a packed room at the Cloverdale

Recreation Centre June 10 that he has been approached many times over the years to seek a seat as a member of Parliament.

“I have considered those suggestions care-fully and, after having discussed this with family, friends and community members, have decided that I will pursue the nomination as a candidate in the new proposed Clover-dale – West Langley riding,” he said.

The crowd included former Surrey MPs Dona Cadman and Benno Friesen. Hayer’s run has also been endorsed by outgoing City of Langley Mayor, Peter Fassbender, the new Liberal MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood.

Hayer announced in July, 2012 that he wouldn’t run in the provincial election held last month.

“Part of that decision was that if (I was) re-elected as MLA in May

2013, and then left to run as an MP in 2015, I would have triggered an expensive by-election which would be costly for my constituents. I believe this would have been the wrong thing to do for my community,” he said.

Hayer decided to make the announce-ment more than two years ahead of the next election, he said, because he wants to use the time to build relationships and help increase Conservative Party membership in the new riding.

“It’s a chance to get to know the community,” he said. “It’s a large rid-ing. I wanted to make sure I have enough time.”

Although he served Surrey-Tynehead as MLA, Hayer does have a connection to Langley, he said, that includes having sat on the Kwantlen Polytech-nic University Board of Governors and serving as District Director of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce Langley-Vancouver Region.

Hayer’s jump from provincial to federal politics comes not only at the urging of friends and constituents, but from his own desire to work for a justice system that better serves victims and their families, he explained.

“One of the closest issues to my heart is a fair justice system,” he said.

Hayer’s father, Tara Singh Hayer, a jour-nalist, was murdered in his Surrey home in 1998, 10 years after a failed attempt on his life that left him in a wheelchair.

After his father’s death, Hayer focused on justice reform, entering provincial politics in 2001.

“There wasn’t much we could do provin-cially, although we did what we could,” he said.

A married father of four, Hayer has two daughters and two sons, ranging in age from 23 to 29 years old.

If elected, Hayer said, he will continue his practice of hosting

coffee meetings once a month, where con-stituents are welcome to drop by without an appointment to discuss any concerns they might have.

“There is much that I can bring to the federal government in terms of issues that are on the minds of Brit-ish Columbians,” said Hayer.

“During my three terms as MLA for Surrey-Tynehead, I listened and worked on constituent issues that encompassed all three levels of govern-ment and also had my personal experi-ence in dealing with many issues including the justice system, a strong economy, jobs, increasing interna-tional trade, seniors issues and long-term prosperity for every-one.”

Anyone who would like to speak with Hayer is invited to contact him at 604-833-4000 or by email at [email protected].

Congratulations to El Fedewich

35 years as a Notary Public in

Cloverdale

El became a BC notary in 1978 and opened up his offi ce in downtown Cloverdale. After a hectic 17 year career in the fi nance business, which took him away from his young family having to travel to many offi ces across Western Canada (before fax, cell phones, etc.) El found Cloverdale to be ideal as it reminded him of the small town of Strathmore, Alberta, where he spent his childhood. For 35 years, El has provided the community with legal services for real estate transfers, preparing mortgages (previous mortgage lending experience proved very helpful), wills, power of attorney, and a host of other legal services. El’s strong involvement in the affairs of Cloverdale made him well known. Some of his community involvement included, Secretary-Clerk of the Surrey Dyking District, Director of Zion Park Manor, Kinsmen Club; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ducks Unlimited (conservation), Director of the BC Notary Society, and more.El is a people person and his love of his work and the community make it diffi cult to quit. El works alongside his daughter, Trish Fedewich and her husband, Norman Witt, who are also BC notaries.

Active moms meet up for outdoor funBy Jennifer LangWhen Samantha

Gernhart was getting the hang of being a first-time mom, she realized she needed to connect with other new moms.

She wanted to social-ize with other women who could relate – but she didn’t really want to chat over coffee while the kids “monkeyed around.”

“Which is fine,” she says, “but it’s not my style.”

Gernhart wanted to do something active – like go for a walk or a hike, and share tips and advice.

So she turned to an online resource called Meetup.com, where she found several “mom-oriented” groups, and headed out to a few local meet-ups, groups and classes for new moms.

Last September, she ended up taking over as volunteer organizer of one of the meet up groups, renaming it the Surrey and Langley Ac-tive Moms group. Her aim was to offer women a free, healthy, social outlet – and a way to meet other moms in a safe, fun environment.

Taking the helm of the group was a way for the 2013 Surrey Wom-en in Business Awards finalist to socialize, get out of the house, and, above all, be active.

Son Logan, 17 months, is very active – as is Gernhart and her husband.

“We love to camp, hike, go canoeing, ski-ing and snowboarding.”

When she took over the meet-up group, there were 24 active members. Now there are 300 and growing, as word about the group spreads.

Gernhart, a busy business owner – just 26, she owns a market-ing company called Clarity Marketing & Design – organizes one to three events a week.

Newcomers and members keep up to date about the goings-on at www.meetup.com/surrey-langley-active-moms, and on Face-book.

They go hiking, visit local parks, and swap parenting tips.

She’s encouraging more women to get involved – and plan events.

“Last week we did a walk in Bear Creek Park, in the rain, and I fell in love with the park. Everything you

could possibly need is there,” she says, adding she’s trying her best to plan more events in

Surrey and Langley.“I recently asked the

moms on Facebook what park we should

meet up next. I want to make sure we do differ-ent areas to allow more moms to come out.”

Members find moral support, and can ask other moms questions, says Kimberly Gleave, who’s learned about baby time, swimming lessons, swap meets, mom co-ops and more since joining.

“This group is best thing I have stumbled upon since becoming a mom,” she adds, admit-ting she tells any new mother she meets to join the group.

All mothers are welcome, from parents with newborns to those chasing after toddlers and older kids.

Women who are expecting are welcome, too, letting them form friendships before their babies arrive.

The biggest ongoing event is a weekly hike on Fridays called Hike Our Butts Off! at Derby

Reach Park in Fort Langley. An average of 10 to 15 members attend.

Any of the members to schedule an activ-

ity – there just has to be another member in their area who can join the outing. Women RSVP through the meetup.com group.

Gernhart has set up a Facebook page for the group, too, and a web-site: Westcoastactive-moms.com.

All aboard for everyoneBy Jennifer LangWhen Cloverdale’s

heritage rail project pulls out of the station carrying its first pas-sengers in half a century this Saturday, people with mobility problems will climb aboard with ease.

The platform at the replica Cloverdale sta-tion has been fitted with an electric lift, allowing passengers in wheel-chairs, people who use canes, or those who simply wish to avoid hiking up the rail car’s steep steps to take a ride on the heritage railway, thanks to a donation from a Surrey credit union that was ap-proved in record time.

On June 22, more than 50 years after she made her last run, the restored interurban car 1225 will shuttle its first passengers along the original line between Cloverdale and Sullivan Station.

It’s a day the Fraser Valley Heritage Rail-way Society, volunteers, their supporters and sponsors, have long worked towards.

In late 2012, after a move to the new car

barn in Cloverdale, the society launched a sponsorship campaign to support the building project for Cloverdale Station, a replica of the original that once stood just metres away.

More than two dozen came forward, ensuring the building was sol-idly built, but also has historically-accurate ex-tras, from double hung windows and heritage paint colours to just-

for-show chimneys and wood stove.

While wheelchair ac-cessibility for the train was not required to cer-tify as a Transport Can-ada-approved passenger service, it was an impor-tant consideration.

The society has more than 300 active mem-bers – many of them se-niors and retirees with the expertise and expe-rience needed to refur-bish the old electric rail

cars. Additionally, vari-ous seniors groups and other rail enthusiasts have made inquiries about taking a ride on the Interurban again.

“They still have mem-ories of going on it but now they can’t climb the steps,” society secretary Allen Aubert said. “It was going to be bitter sweet.”

The Savaria multi lift, its installation, and a folding wheelchair have been made possible thanks to the G & F Fi-nancial Group Founda-tion.

“We were just blown away by the scale and scope of what this is and what this will be,” recalled Thomas To-masovszky, financial services manager of the Cloverdale branch. He approached approached the G&F Financial Group Foundation to consider supporting the project.

The board’s approval came in record time, convening on an emer-gency basis to consider the application.

“We really felt that this was something big – and different, too,” To-masovszky said. “This is a grand project.”

Added financial ser-vices officer Shannon Smith: “We just think it’s a great project and we’d like to continue to be a part of it.”

Aubert said without the lift, there would be many potential passen-gers – in addition to vol-unteers who’ve helped see the project through to this stage – who would otherwise be left watching from the plat-form as the heritage rail revival pulls out from Cloverdale Station on weekends to Thanksgiv-ing. “We will now have an accessible Interur-ban,” Aubert said.

JENNIFER LANG PHOTOAccessible dream: Allan Pope of CHIMO Lifts Inc., Allen Aubert, FVHRS, Shannon Smith and Thomas Tomasovszky and of G&F Financial Group, Cloverdale, pose with the new lift.

Students rack up salesGeorge Greenaway Elementary was a humming

hive of economic – and charitable – activity earlier this month, when students held an entrepreneur fair.

Presented by students in Grade 5, along with some kids in Grades 6 and 7, children from in other classes and parents were invited to drop by the fair, where students sold ev-erything from duct tape rings, bird houses and jewellery to piggy banks, key chains, flower pots and paper weights.

The students sold merchandise they had researched, developed, created and marketed themselves.

The young entrepre-neurs donated as much as 10 per cent of their profits to charity, while Grade 7

members of the Me to We Club also took part, col-lecting donations for a water pump for a village in Kenya.

The following is a time-line of recent milestones along the journey to the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society’s launch of the heritage rail dem-onstration project.April 2009BCER 1304, the Royal car “Con-naught,” returned to Canada in April, 2009, landing at Sullivan Station. BCER 1304 was built in New Westminster in 1911, and caught re near Cloverdale in 1945, and was nearly completely rebuilt in ‘46. She returned to service, making one last run to Chilliwack in 1955. Restoration efforts are still underway in 2013.

June 2011Work is underway at the new home in Cloverdale of the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society, in an-ticipation of a move from Sullivan in the fall. The project suffers a delay when unexpected organics are discovered on the site, result-ing in soil remediation before it can go ahead.

August, 2011Surface drainage is installed on the site, a job that requires exten-sive infrastructure.

March 2012The City of Surrey issues a building permit, allowing The Lark Group and RDM to begin construction on the Cloverdale Car Barn.

May 2012The walls go up at the car barn.

July 2012The addition of green vinyl siding means the exterior is mostly com-plete, while work continues inside.

August 2012BCER cars 1225 and 1304, plus the Clover Belle trolley, are lifted, and loaded onto transport trucks for the move to Cloverdale.

October 2012FVHRS hosts its rst open house at the Cloverdale car barn, wel-coming hundreds of visitors to its new digs.

November, 2012Construction begins on the replica Cloverdale Station at the foot of 176A Street, just south of Hwy 10, and only steps from where the original B.C. Electric Railway station stood.

December 2012The walls go up on the heritage rail station, and the roof trusses are in place by the end of the year. Meanwhile, a campaign for sponsors to contribute material, labour and cash for Cloverdale Station is in full swing, as well as a volunteer drive.

January 2013Roo ng is completed, shingles are installed, and concrete ooring is poured indoors.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEBy Addison Hubert, Cloverdale Chamber President

Bill Reid was the heart and soul of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce and worked tirelessly for 12 years as Executive Director.

Around the board table and particularly at the microphone, Bill’s upbeat attitude and constant smile was an inspiration to us all.

He believed in community involvement and tirelessly and constantly involved his many friends and acquaintances in Cloverdale events and Sur-rey fundraisers. His enthusiasm and generosity was legend and everyone enjoyed work-ing with him simply because he was fun to be around.

As Surrey’s Citizen of the year in 2013 and a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award Bill was very proud of the honors, but he was proudest of his achievements in the Cloverdale Business community by uniting those who believed that a supportive business organization that gets involved in the community can make a big difference in the economic prosperity of that community.

Bill was a leader, a mentor, and a very good friend to all of us. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his wife Marion, his four daughters and their families.

It is with heartfelt sadness we face the loss of our friend and Executive Director.

Farewell Bill. Rest in Peace.

Addison Hubert: President Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce.

The society is planning to open the museum to the public on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the year. Reid’s tenacity and passion commendedSurrey’s Good Citizen of the Year two months ago – a distinction he earned in recognition of more than 50 years of community service.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts called Reid “a truly extraordinary human being” who was passionate, kind, and hard working.

“He really set an exemplary example of service and leadership for all of us to follow,” Watts said, speaking from a podium decorated with a large poster of a smiling Reid draped in a Canadian flag poncho.

Reid’s tenacity, she noted, “usually meant he end-ed up getting what he wanted.” Watts was among those on Reid’s distribution list for deliveries of freshly-caught crab – straight from the briny waters of Birch Bay, where the Reids keep a holiday home, a treasure trove of memories for family and friends.

“His legacy was everything he touched in the community and in our hearts,” she added.

Other speakers included former MP John Reyn-olds and former B.C. MLAs Kevin Falcon and Grace McCarthy, who spoke of Reid’s days as a member of the Social Credit government.

“He was a remarkable MLA,” she said, as the auditorium – festooned with red, white and blue balloons, colours that recalled his years as a Social Credit MLA (1983 to 1991) exploded with applause.

Falcon, who entered provincial politics as a re-sult of Reid’s encouragement, said Reid would have loved the tribute.

To Dave Woods, past commander of the Surrey RCMP’s Cloverdale/Port Kells District Office, Reid was a role model and friend whose influence was

such that he managed to orchestrate an unofficial stop in Cloverdale by the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay.

“We bent the rules frequently for Bill,” Woods smiled. “I’m going to miss him and I think all of Cloverdale truly will.”

For friend Sherrold Haddad, Reid was simply, “A man whose legacy will be written in the history of our city, our country and our province.”

Welcome to the Grand HotelGrand Hotel: Redesigning

Modern Life, the new Vancouver Art Gallery

exhibit, offers what a good ho-tel should – opportunities to relax, travel, dream and depart refreshed.

Featuring four main themes – travel, design, culture and social impact, Grand Hotel is stimulating, enlightening, and delightfully entertaining.

Historically, authors, musi-cians and film stars have left a little lustre on their favourite accommodations. VAG’s ex-hibit playfully points out that – plush or pathetic, pension or penthouse – hotels, and those who frequent them, stamp their identities on our cities, our histories, and our lives.

Take the Strand Hotel in Yangon, for instance. Located in a former Burmese capital, the hotel was once a favourite with George Orwell, author of Animal Farm. Report-edly based at the Strand while writing Burmese Days, Orwell’s stopover in 1934 played a pivotal part in shaping his affection for the area. It also shaped his criticism of colo-nial prejudice prevalent at the time. Burmese Days reflected this, resulting in it being re-jected by British publishers.

For me, Singapore’s legend-ary Raffles has always con-jured up images of romance, history and mystery. Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling,

Ernest Hemingway and Alfred Hitchcock all stayed there. Joseph Conrad described it as a “straggling building as airy as a birdcage”. Author of The End of The Tether, Conrad frequented the Raffles bar, But, did he actually stay in the hotel? No one is quite certain. Undeterred, Raffles has named a suite after him with a turn-down service which includes a four-page excerpt from the book.

Conrad Hilton’s far-sighted decisions to build hotels in Europe and the Middle East during the Cold War encour-aged travel to previously war-torn regions, and stimulated economies. A picture of Hilton signing a document under a sign proclaiming ‘World Peace through International Trade and Travel’ reminds me that

jet travel brought Europe, the mid-dle East and North America closer. Hilton was deter-mined that Hilton International would profile the American way of life with a com-bination of local architecture, canny American market-ing…and surrepti-

tious secret service surveillance opportunities.

A picture of the rock band, Led Zeppelin, in the West Hollywood’s legendary Cha-teau Marmot is a reminder that Annie Leibovitz, Dorothy Parker and F. Scott Fitzgerald were among the many film folks who favoured this el-

egant property. It is also where John Belushi died of a drug overdose in 1982.

In Vienna, composer Rich-ard Wagner and his family chose the Hotel Imperial in 1875 for its proximity to the Vienna State Opera. Years later it became the Soviet headquarters after World War 11. It was returned to the state in 1955. Throughout the intervening years, assorted diplomats and dignitaries came to stay. It is believed that the Hotel Imperial was the es-sence of what we now call the coffee-house culture.

I fantasize about reclining on a chintz chaise longue at Raffles, or the Waldorf-Asto-ria, surrounded by the rich and famous. But, for now, my trade-off is lunch on the VAG

Gallery Café terrace basking in spring sunshine and clas-sical music. My journey has been worthwhile.

Grand Hotel: Redesigning Modern Life is open until September 15. As a value-added bonus it offers ‘guests’ a subtle walk down memory lane. Check in, and stay a while. I heartily recommend it – and the price is right. Senior admission is $15, or, by dona-tion after 5 p.m on Tuesdays. The Vancouver Art Gallery is located at 750 Hornby Street, Vancouver. Open daily.

CLAYTON HEIGHTS SECONDARYGraduation is a special time for teachers and support sta . On one hand, we will miss our students and the lively interactions we had over the years. On the other, we are so excited to see them embark on the next phase of their lives as they move into the post-secondary world. I hope that they will in some way share our sentiments. Some will continue with studies and others

will choose to go to work. Our grads have already displayed their capacity for extraordinary academic achievement by earning over half a million dollars in academic, athletic and arts awards. e grade 12 females will forever have the bragging rights as the winners of the provincial rugby championship. In addition, our school’s strong service learning program has prepared our graduates to carry on a spirit of community responsibility and philanthropy. My sincere hope is that the knowledge and skills acquired at Clayton Heights will serve them well into the future. I know that the Class of 2013 joins with me in expressing deep appreciation to the teachers, coaches and support sta that helped them achieve their goals. Equally, I know the entire sta at Clayton Heights, along with all your teachers from Kindergarten on, extends their heartfelt congratulations on your graduation and wish you nothing but the best in your future. Here’s to the Class of 2013!
