BIA sees signs of promise

By Jennifer LangFrom the arrival of desirable new business-

es to the launch of heritage rail operations, the past year has been an eventful one, according to the executive director of the Cloverdale Business Improvement Associa-tion – and there’s a de nite buzz of economic optimism in the historic town centre.

Members gathered for their An-nual General Meeting July 11 at the Cloverdale Legion, where Paul Orazietti presented an overview of various projects and initiatives.

Over the past year, Cloverdale has seen a number of businesses opening up, along with existing businesses that have undertaken renovations and other improve-ments.

“Cloverdale has really grown and changed,” he said, pointing to new addi-tions to 176 Street such as Timeless Treasures, a new business specializing in antiques and collectibles that has relocated from Fort Lang-ley to downtown Cloverdale.

CBSA PHOTOCBSA border services officers discovered 56 bricks of suspected cocaine in five card-board boxes on two pallets at the Pacific Highway crossing.

Canada Border Service Agency officers discov-ered 62 kilos of suspected cocaine inside a com-mercial food shipment arriving from California last month at the Pacific Border.

The agency announced July 11 it seized 56 bricks hidden inside cardboard boxes packaged on two pallets. The discovery took place June 26. The driv-er of the truck had been referred for secondary in-spection after failing to satisfy the officer about the contents of his load as described in the bill lading.

The bricks were discovered inside five cardboard boxes sitting on two pallets.

The driver was arrested and the incident is now being investigated by the RCMP.

It’s the largest interception of cocaine in B.C. in two years. In July 2011, officers seized 115 kilos of cocaine, also at the Pacific Highway crossing.

CorrectionA photo accompanying last week’s story, “Bose

Farm development receives council nod,” (July 11), incorrectly identified the property and trees in-volved. The photograph showed a parcel of the his-toric Bose Farm immediately to the east at 16390 64 Avenue that is being developed by Rempel Devel-opment Group. The heritage barn and dairy shed are being restored as part of the development.

The land is adjacent to a parcel located at 16420 64 Avenue referred to in the story, and which is the focus of residential development plans by Platinum Enterprises. The developer has agreed to preserve the Henry Bose farmhouse, milk cooling shed, and calf barn on the property, along with creating 44 single family lots, 249 townhomes, and a park that will retain 122 significant trees.

Another coal termi-nal expansion handling metallurgical coal has been approved by the port authority in North

Vancouver, but work is not yet underway.

The regional district has opposed the Fraser Surrey Docks proposal and medical health of-ficers want a health im-pact assessment prior to an approval decision by Port Metro Vancouver.

All hail heritage rail Federal Conservative race heats upThe proposed new federal riding of Cloverdale-West Langley has attract-

ed another Conservative party hopeful.Businessman Paul Brar is the latest candidate to declare his intent to run

under the Conservative banner. That makes two officially-declared hopefuls vying for the Conservative

party’s nod for the next federal election in October 2015. Brar planned to make his formal announcement yester-

day (July 17) at the Cloverdale Library, after the Reporter’s deadline. In a press release, Brar said he decided to pursue the nomination as a candidate in the proposed riding of Clo-verdale-West Langley after “much discussion with his family, several community members, and considerable deliberation.

He joined the party in 2006 and has been approached many times to seek a seat as MP, he said, because of his stance for Conservative and family values, and his success in business.

Last month, former B.C. Liberal MLA Dave Hayer announced at the Clo-verdale Rec Centre he intends to seek the federal Conservative party nomi-nation for the proposed new riding of Cloverale-West Langley.

Hayer was the MLA for Surrey-Tynehead for 12 years, from 2001 to 2013. His Langley connections include serving on the Kwantlen Polytechnic Uni-versity’s board of governors and was Langley-Vancouver district director for the B.C. Chamber of Commerce.

By Jennifer LangOne month after

its launch, the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway passenger project in Cloverdale is proving to be a hit.

Cloverdale Station – a replica of the original 1910 B.C. Electric Railway hub – and the return of a working 1912 interurban car to the original Chilli-wack line are attracting railway buffs of all ages eager to take a ride.

The newly-opened station was a recently backdrop for its first wedding photo shoot.

As well, one of the passengers hopping aboard Car 1225 for the 50-minute run to Sul-livan Station and back, was a ventriloquist who

brought her mannequin along for the ride, to the amusement of the other riders.

And last weekend, the railway hit the 1,000-passenger mark.

Some of the hap-piest passengers have been children, many of whom have never ridden a train before, reports Allen Aubert, secretary of the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society, the volunteer organization running the heritage railway on weekends to Thanks-giving.

“Little kids have been dreaming about it the night before,” he says.

Adult passengers, too, say they trip exceeds their expecta-tions, and that they’d

take another ride if given the chance.

Six trains a day leave Cloverdale Station at the top of the hour on Saturdays and Sundays, with the first train leaving at 10 a.m. and the last run of the day starting out at 3 p.m.

Passengers seem to know to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes ahead of time, says Aubert, noting, “It’s settling into a rhythm.”

So far, there’s been one unanticipated hitch: on July 6, the so-ciety was forced to tem-porarily halt operations for the day. The South-ern Railway of British Columbia needed the line to transport freight on a Saturday, an un-foreseen circumstance

related to flooding in Alberta. (Aubert notes the FVHRS passenger schedule is subject to track availability.)

Full operations resumed the next day, but were delayed again due to track availability the following Saturday, July 13, when the first train didn’t leave until 11 a.m., again because of freight requirements on the track.

Visitors are encour-aged to consult the latest schedule infor-mation online at www.fvhrs.org.

It’s not until you sit down at a banquet or party that the mem-ory of some kind of entertain-

ment performed at a convention or gathering, comes to your mind and you think, “Why don’t we have entertainment like that any more?”

What people fail to realize is that those entertainers or musi-cians are senior citizens now, and like you, wonder what they will do with their retirement.

In the last couple of years com-ments like, “I wondered what you were doing?” or “I thought you were dead,” kept cropping up when meeting performers from a few years ago.

A lot of us had to go out and get a “regular job” to feed the family. When Disco and DJs came along with all the di erent sounds and songs, and the fact that you didn’t have to pay for a whole band, things changed.

We all became mechanics and salesmen, or women, just to make a living. Some of us managed to keep going with the occasional “gig” but unknowingly a whole style of en-tertainment was being lost.

I still liked the feeling of per-forming in front of a live audi-ence and so with some of my retired friends, started up a vol-unteer performance group called the Versatiles, and we went out and put on full variety shows and sang and danced and made peo-ple laugh as we had in the past.

Since the Versatiles were formed

in 2005, we have had any num-ber of people join and leave and come back again because of the fun we have and the joy that we see on the faces of our audiences.

Festivals, hospitals, senior resi-dences and elementary schools have bene ted and enjoyed the old style of entertainment. Our oldest member is now going on

92 years and we take anyone that is retired and over the age of 55.

Do you have music, dance or acting in your own history? May-be you juggle or ride a unicycle. Maybe you just like working with sound and lights or costumes and props.

We need some new people for the next season of shows. (We already have four shows booked this fall). As long as you like to have fun and want to join a crazy group of people, come on down. Every Mon-day starting Aug. 5 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 6, at 17567 57 Avenue, at 12 p.m., come and see us, or you can e-mail Susie Francis (Hall) at [email protected] to nd out more about the new Society of Versatile Entertainers.

Don’t become one of the for-gotten ones and let your talent go to waste. Always keep a smile on your face and people wonder what you’re getting up to, you’re only as young as your imagination.

– Susie Francis is director of the Versatiles

Mounties ride for Block WatchBy Jennifer LangThe RCMP Musical

Ride is trotting into Cloverdale for four performances over two days at the Stetson Bowl later this month.

The popular, patriotic ride is presented July 27 and 28 (at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day) by the Block Watch Society of B.C.

The Surrey Food Bank will be doing a 50/50 draw at each show.

The Musical Ride is performed by a troop of 32 riders and horses who execute a variety

of intricate figures and cavalry drills to music.

The movements demand control, timing and coordination.

The riders are all full-time members of the RCMP, and they apply to be chosen for the program.

The Musical Ride was developed in 1876 by early members of the North-West Mounted Police to display their riding ability and entertain the local com-munity.

It has evolved over the decades into a uniquely Canadian

performance enjoyed by tens of thousands of spectators every year.

They perform from May to October, tour-ing across Canada.

Tickets for the Stet-son Bowl performances are available at Ticket-master.ca. Tickets are $12 (general admission seating) or $8 )standing room only).

The Cloverdale Fair-grounds won’t be your only chance to catch the spectacle close to home.

The RCMP Musical Ride is also being per-formed at Semiahmoo Park in White Rock next Friday, on July 26. Tickets for that event are available online through the Surrey Arts Centre (tickets.surrey.ca).

Pat Keeping, left, Poppy Committee Chairperson, presents a $3,000 cheque to Yolanda Bouwman of the Surrey Hospital Foundation. Another $1,000 was donated that same evening to Andrea Coogan, development officer of the B.C. Cancer Foundation’s Fraser Valley Centre.

CMHC forecastA small increase in

new home construction is being forecast for 2014 in Metro Vancouver.

The Canada Mort-gage and Housing Corp. projects 18,200 homes will be started in the region this year and 18,700 in 2014, an in-crease next year of 2.7 per cent.

Senior CMHC ana-lyst Lance Jakubec said new construction will essentially hold steady this year, but rental apartment construction will take a larger share of multi-family housing starts.

Existing home sales in Metro Vancouver are projected to be roughly the same this year as in 2012, and then grow about 10 per cent in 2014.

The CMHC projects about a seven per cent increase in Fraser Valley home starts next year.

Have a cup of coffee with Dave HayerDave is a Conservative Party of Canada candidate for MP Nomination in the new proposed riding of Cloverdale - West Langley. He will be holding coffee meetings in Cloverdale - West Langley on the second Saturday of each month, starting in September 2013 at the Ricky’s Restaurant, 17830 - #10 Hwy, Cloverdale. Time is: 3:15pm to 4:30 pm.

He will also be holding another coffee meeting on the fourth Saturday of each month start-ing in September 2013 at the Pantry Restaurant located in Willowbrook Mall, 130 - 19705 Fraser Hwy., Langley. Time is also: 3:15pm to 4:30 pm.

As an MLA, Dave had held regular monthly coffee meetings for the last 12 years, which any of his constituents were welcome to attend without an appointment. These new cof-fee meeting locations are meant to reach out to constituents in Cloverdale - West Langley so that they can become familiar with him and he can hear what they have to say about Federal issues that concern them. Dave always buys everyone’s rst cup of coffee and looks forward to hearing their points of view.

Mr. Hayer says, “I rmly believe in being accessible to constituents and I want to hear from those in the new proposed riding of Cloverdale - West Langley. I have found that by holding these community meetings I was able to reach many constituents who were not able to make it to my of ce for one reason or another. I would like to extend that same practice of accessibility and listening to constituent concerns to the new proposed riding of Cloverdale - West Langley.

In fact, my commitment to the community also includes the fact that I am moving into the riding. I have sold my current home in Fraser Heights and am moving into the Clayton Heights community near 69 Avenue and 193 Street. I look forward to having the opportu-nity of working hard for my constituents and if elected, advocating for them in govern-ment.”

You can contact Dave S. Hayer at 604 833 4000.

An owl-ful lot going onBy Jennifer LangMeet the mastermind behind

B.C.’s famed eagle cams, and check out live, rescued owls up close this Saturday at the Surrey Museum’s Owl Investigation, next up in the Discovery Saturday series.

The museum is currently home to Birds of Prey, an exhibit featur-ing specimens of more than 40 hawks, owls, eagles and falcons, on loan from the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria.

Owl Investigation runs from 1 to 4 p.m. July 20. Meet live, res-cued owls and make owl crafts. The event is open to all ages. Ad-mission is by donation.

In the morning, there’s a fact-filled, fun session for preschool-ers: Tot Tour: Whootie the Owl. That’s happening from 10:30 a.m. to noon. (It’s $10.25 and is for children aged three to six years).

In the afternoon, David Han-cock, creator of the original eagle camera, is giving a lecture from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Cost is $5. The Hancock Wildlife Foundation’s live streaming video from B.C. eagle nests have captivated view-ers across the world.

The museum is also offering Birds of Prey summer day camps throughout July and August. The camps are for children aged six to nine years old. Call 604-592-6956 for more information on all these programs and to pre-register.

On August 24, the museum hosts Fine Feathers Make Fine

Birds, presented by fashion his-torian Ivan Sayers, who will share slides, examples and entertaining information on the use of feath-ers in 20th Century fashion.

The Surrey Museum is located

at 17710 56A Avenue in Surrey. Admission in 2013 is sponsored by the Friends of the Surrey Mu-seum and Archives Society.

The area is transforming

By Jeff NagelMetro Vancouver di-

rectors have rejected a proposal to let stock cars race once again at a long-closed speedway in Campbell Valley Re-gional Park.

Metro’s environment and parks committee voted 8-3 June 11 to halt further study of the idea after passionate presen-tations from defenders of the park.

Most committee members agreed racing would be an incompat-ible use at odds with the enjoyment of tranquil nature and the use of the area by horse riders.

Most also said the proposal faced multiple high hurdles, including potential reviews over fishery or environmen-tal risks and needed approval from the Agri-cultural Land Commis-sion.

“From my perspec-tive, the challenges are just too great,” said Langley Township Coun. Bob Long.

Richmond Coun. Harold Steves said it would inappropriately alter the long-standing theme of nature and equestrian use at Camp-bell Valley.

The society proposed racing at a restored speedway on a maxi-mum of 14 days a year, with the facility act-ing as a multi-purpose venue for concerts and other events as well – potentially becoming a money maker for the Metro parks depart-ment.

“People say it will

be the ruination of the park,” said Langley City Coun. Gayle Martin, one of three directors who wanted more study on the racing option. “It’s two per cent of the park, one per cent of the time.”

The debate pitted two different sets of horse-power fans against each other – equestrians and car racers. It also left Metro directors in an uncomfortable posi-tion – many wanted to explore broader uses of parks and the potential revenue it could bring, but were reluctant to alienate regular park-goers and some found exhaust-belching motor sports an inherent con-flict with regional envi-ronmental goals.

Langley Speedway Historical Society mem-bers haven’t given up all hope.

“We’re not going to flog a dead horse,” Dan Olson said. “However, in politics things can change and they can change suddenly. We will be looking for re-sponsible opportunities. I still don’t rule out, in spite of what happened here today, the return of racing one day to Campbell Valley Re-gional Park.”

Several directors said there’s clearly demand for a racing venue in Metro Vancouver and were hopeful a more suitable site might be found.

Delegations to the committee all opposed restoring the track, which last hosted races

in 1984.“Shame on you for

even thinking of put-ting racing in the park,” said Carla Robin of the Langley Horse and Farm Federation.

Also opposed was Pa-cific Riding for Devel-oping Abilities, a neigh-bouring non-profit that uses therapy horses to assist mainly autistic clients.

The decision must still be ratified at the next full Metro board meeting.

Metro board nixes speedway revival

along with other initiatives, from hanging baskets and graffiti re-moval to partnering with the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and others to orga-nize events like the upcoming Cloverdale Blueberry Festival (Aug. 10), the Halloween Cos-tume Parade, and Surrey’s Santa Parade of Lights.

Features like the hanging bas-kets, the addition of new busi-nesses, and renovations like the Frontline Real Estate building at 56A and 176 Street, and the Lang Building have helped make the downtown seem more desirable to new businesses and shoppers.

“The area is transforming,” Orazietti told the Reporter earlier this week.

“There’s a consistent flow of people who are buying into the vision,” he added. “There’s that sense of buzz. It’s critical mass – you become a desirable area.”

The past year also saw the

opening of Brick Yard Station, the new commercial plaza at the long-vacant corner of Highway 10 and the Cloverdale bypass.

Priorities for 2013/14 include stepping up pressure on the city and the developer in hopes of speeding up the Cloverdale West Village proposal and working on gateway signage welcoming visi-tors to the historic town centre.

Orazietti said the pie-shaped vacant lot at 58 Avenue and the Cloverdale Bypass is the subject of a development proposal that could see the addition of land-mark gateway signage if the proj-ect – in this case, an unnamed bank – goes ahead.

“These particular landmarks are really important for people to get a sense of arrival,” Orazietti said.

“We have such travel flowing through the area, they want to get a sense that they’ve come to a community. This is the front door.”

The BIA is putting money

aside for another gateway feature at the south end of 176 Street near Highway 10 that would help identify the historic part of downtown Cloverdale.

The Cloverdale BIA also works with other groups, including the Surrey Heritage Society, which recently opened up the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum on the southwest corner of the Clover-dale Fairgrounds.

Continuing to market the area as a heritage tourism destination is another goal for 2013.

The launch of weekend pas-senger runs by the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society out of Cloverdale Station has been an-other highlight of the past year, he said.

“There’s a really large dedi-cated group of volunteers that make this railway happen, very much like the BIA, and again, a lot of what you see going on here is generous time donation by people who care about their community.”

JENNIFER LANG PHOTOThese hanging baskets are the pride of 176 Street in Cloverdale. The baskets are paid for by the City of Sur-rey and the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association. They are the number-one com-ment the BIA receives from visitors and members.
