4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH

4-H Records & Awards Applications Due Sept. 21 by 4:30 PM

All individual and club 4-H records and award applica-tions are due to the Madison County Extension Office no later than Friday, September 21 at 4:30 PM. Each family should have received a 2012 Recognition Booklet via email or the mail, detailing the 4-H Record Keeping system and explaining the criteria for youth and adult awards. Record keeping is an ongoing process that helps docu-ment what you wanted to learn throughout the year (your goals), what you learned, and how you plan to improve next year. Every 4-Her should have some form of a record keep-ing system for livestock or static exhibits. Three-ring binders are a good way to stay organized—4-H binders are available at the Extension Office at a cost of $3. Not sure how to get started? Look through the Recog-nition Booklet you received, pick up FREE information, award application and nomination forms at the Exten-sion Office or visit www.extension.edu/madison for more information, applications and helpful tips. Record keeping makes a scrapbook of your 4-H experi-ences, helps you learn a skill you will use the rest of your life, and is a lot of fun to look at years later! With all the record book pages, it can be confusing to know where they all go. If you would like help, you are welcome to come into the Extension Office and I can help you with your book. If you have questions or would like help getting start-ed, contact your club leader, a member of the Youth & 4-H Committee or the Extension Office!

Iowa Farmers Can Plant the Seed to Help Grow Local 4-H Clubs

Farmers in all 99 Iowa Counties have the opportunity to plant the seed that helps grow their commu-nities. Through America’s Farmers Grow CommunitiesSM, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, farmers can win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit organization.

The program is part of a broad commitment by the Monsan-to Fund to invest in farm communities, in order to highlight the important contributions farmers make every day to our society. Farmers can apply online at www.growcommunities.com or call 1.877.267.3332 to apply by phone.

Farmers, age 21 and over, who are actively engaged in farm-ing a minimum of 250 acres of corn, cotton, or soybeans, or 40 acres of open field vegetables, or at least 10 acres of to-matoes, peppers and/or cucumbers grown in protected cul-ture are eligible. Farmers can enter now through Nov. 30, 2012. The program is open to all qualifying farmers, and no purchase is necessary in order to enter or win. Farmers who meet the eligibility requirements may enter regardless of previous participation. One winner will be drawn from each of the participating counties, and the Monsanto Fund will announce winning farmers and recipient organizations in December 2012.

4-H Volunteer Training—September 27 Effective 4-H Clubs are Active 4-H groups. We want clubs to engage in a variety of activities and events. That's what makes 4-H fun, educational, and keeps youth excited about 4-H. We simply need to plan and conduct those activities in a safe manner. We need to ensure that risks to the the 4-H program, the county extension districts, and Iowa State Uni-versity are minimized and properly managed. Most importantly, we need to ensure that our most critical assets - our 4-H members - are protected. This training will include newly updated 4-H risk management resources and will be held on Thursday, September 27 at 6 PM at Madison County Extension Office. A benefit of participating in the face-to-face volunteer training is the interaction and sharing. If you are not able to attend the training, please contact the Extension Office to learn about participating through other training options.
