DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH CULTURAL INCLUSION DAY
At Clovelly Park Primary School we celebrate our diversity in many different ways every day. But last Wednesday we came together as a community to celebrate our cultural diversity. Did you know? The population of Australia is over 24 million people and
almost 50% of Australians were born overseas or have a parent who was
At Clovelly Park we have 365 students and 62% of our students are EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect)
In Australia more than 200 countries make up our
Australian community At Clovelly Park there are 57 different cultures
represented in our community In Australia, 300 languages are spoken At Clovelly Park we have 35 language groups of which
Arabic is the most common language other than English. So you can see how unique we are here at Clovelly Park and our Cultural Inclusion Day was about celebrating our uniqueness, our inclusiveness, respect and sense of belonging for everyone. We know that a sense of belonging and a strong cultural identity supports the development of children’s identity and self-esteem. We also know that strong relationships and secure, caring environments at home and at school help to provide a sense of stability and belonging. Our relationships at Clovelly Park are based on and reinforced everyday through our school values of tolerance, persistence, cooperation, responsibility and respect. The activities on Wednesday were just another way to help us all understand how Australians of different backgrounds live together. It provided a great opportunity for students to learn that not only do they share common ground with other cultures, but also that our differences make Australia a special place to live. Thanks you to Lynnette Mawby and her team of helpers for organizing such a fantastic day enjoyed by everyone.

Students acting together for reconciliation
Addressing, preventing and building
resilience against racism On Friday 23 September, Year 7 students had the opportunity to
attend a student congress that included students from all over
Adelaide in year 7-9. People presented from many organisations
such as Amnesty International, Reconciliation SA and the ActNow
Theatre. There were many students from all over Adelaide.
The theme was responding to racism and the workshop was held
at the Ascot Park Bowling Club. The people from Clovelly Park
Primary School that went were Sophie (Y7), Lara (Y7), Gemma
(Y7), Molly (Y7), Lucas (Y7), Ahmad (Y7), Abdulhay (Y6), Brayden
(Y6), Nyajima (Y6), Tahleia (Y6), Mrs Faulkner and Sophie Tree
(Y7 pre-service teacher).
Some of the things we did included listening to stories of people’s
experiences with racism and responding to these experiences in
small groups. We also partnered up with someone from another
school and introduced ourselves and shared our own stories about
times when racism has come into our lives.
A highlight was when we heard Ellie Lovegrove, an X-Factor
contestant, sing a song she wrote about her own life and how
racism affected her.
Interactive theatre was used to help us learn how to deal with
racism effectively and appropriately. This opportunity also taught
us that racism can take place anywhere.
It is important that all racism is dealt with as soon it is happens.
Racism is a global problem that can be solved when people
understand that the smallest actions can affect someone for life.
