A natural ridge that forms the North-South axis in Ortigia.
Ortigia’s orthogonal planning created important connections that were based on natural features of the land. The street network was also influenced by the placement of buildings and plazzos by designing street layouts with these important features in mind as well as applying Hippodamus theories, Ortigia now has a clearly defined North and South axis with many East and West streets. These allowed for Siracusa to grow into one of the most powerful areas of the Magna Greca for some time.
