The Gift That Keeps On Giving No holiday playlist would be complete without Vince Vance & the Valiants' "All I Want For Christmas Is You." Written by Vance (aka Andy Stone) and Troy Powers and sung by "Valiantette" Lisa Layne, the 1989 classic might never have made it to Country

radio if not for the unusual single artwork. WPOC/Baltimore's then-PD Bob Moody tells Country Aircheck he and then-MD Greg Cole and a few others were in their weekly music meeting when Vance's cone-shaped hair caught their attention. "Just from the way it looked, we all thought it was a heavy metal band," Moody says. "So we played it as a joke, expecting it to be terrible. It turned out to be one of the best songs we've ever heard. I don't think anybody believed it at first. We just sat there and it got real quiet in the room. I said, 'Greg, would you play that again?' We were a pretty big station to be going outside of the box on this act nobody had ever heard of, that probably wasn't even country. We took it into the control room to the afternoon drive guy, Todd Grimsted. I said, 'Todd I just want you to play this in a segue. No intro, no back-sell. Just play it and see if we get any reaction.' He came into my office a couple

hours later and said, 'I'm still getting calls from people wanting to know what that song was.' Everything about it was outstanding, starting with the song itself. And Lisa Layne's vocal is one of the best performances ever recorded. She's incredible." Layne first heard the song when Stone and Powers were writing it. "I wasn't thinking in terms of 'this might be a hit' because it was

just a song we were going to sing at Christmas shows," she remembers. "What you hear on the radio was a scratch vocal. I began to think it was maybe a big deal when the musicians on

the recording – all really in-demand Nashville musicians – stuck around after their job had been done. They don't usually do that." Moody knew he had a hit on his hands. "One of our clues was when we started getting calls from retailers who were annoyed," he recalls. "They said, 'We've got people asking for this song and it's not on the Top 100. We don't even know what label it is. The

rack jobber doesn't know anything about it.' We posted a list in the control room of local stores that had it in stock, because we were getting so many calls. "Around '92, we realized it was so big that instead of putting it on the Christmas playlist, we added it to our current playlist at Christmas," Moody adds. "We'd put it in as a medium the day after Thanksgiving, and a couple of weeks before Christmas, we'd put it in heavy. People would call and say, 'When are you going to start playing that song?'" Moody acknowledges 'POC wasn't the first station to play it, but probably the first in a major market. Stone even sent Moody printed sheet music to thank him (Stone had copy No. 1; Moody No. 2). "It was a little easier in those days," Moody says. "We had the latitude to take a chance on it. And that has to do with stations being programmed locally. If you're making decisions for a hundred radio stations, you can't put other people's careers in jeopardy. But it was a song that couldn't be denied. If your station wasn't going to play it, [your listeners] would go somewhere that

would." Moody thinks the song's Cinderella moment could happen today – but on YouTube. "Radio people are not in a position to take those chances now." Layne attributes the song's longevity to "that magical combination that doesn't happen often. The song, musicians, producer and the singer all came together at the right time for a timeless piece of music." The tune brought Layne more than just a hit song. "I ended up marrying the first DJ in the country to play the song," she says of then-KISX/Tyler, TX PD and air personality Ted Stewart, who played the demo before the single was released. "He was the love of my life. He passed away in 2008 from a heart attack." "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has been covered by country artists Sammy Kershaw (1994) and LeAnn Rimes (2004). Layne still performs the song in her solo shows and is touring again with Vance, who was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010. "It is still so much fun," she says. "Every show has to end with that song." Reach Moody here; Layne here. –Wendy Newcomer

UPDATE

Brandon Lancaster from Arista’s LanCo discusses his most influential music:1. Randy Travis’ “Three Wooden crosses:” The first time I heard that song, it completely changed my perspective on songwriting. I knew I wanted to use music to tell stories. 2. Eric Church: In 2012 I saw Church

at the Tivoli theater in Chattanooga. I had been to concerts my whole life, but I had never felt anything as electric as that night. I sang every word to every song and held a boot high in the air during “These Boots.” 3. Alabama: We are obviously huge fans of bands who’ve come before us and laid the foundation. Alabama’s anthemic songs and harmonies are definitely a huge influence on us. 4. Brad Paisley’s “Whiskey Lullaby:” I’ve always been a big folk and bluegrass fan, so combining Alison Krauss’ pure voice with Paisley’s ability to tell a story, it’s the ultimate musical combination for me. I still get chill bumps every time I listen to this haunting song. 5. Alan Jackson: All the guys in LANco go through his catalogue like crazy on the road. “Chattahoochee,” “Remember When,” “Drive,” “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow” ... His songs have gotten us through many late-night drives.• Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Beyoncé. I know her older stuff, but it seems I’ve heard more buzz about her last two records. I’ve missed the boat on those.• “Important” music you just don’t get: K-Pop. I know it’s an absolutely huge genre but other than “Gangnam Style” I just can’t get through more than 10 seconds of it. Maybe if I lived in Korea for a time.• An album you listened to incessantly: Jason Isbell’s Southeastern. For the past year and a half it’s been the album I can thrown on vinyl and just let it take me to a special place. • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Jon Bellion’s new record The Human Condition. Music should speak truth. To me this album is an hour-long think piece on the current generation, yet it mixes incredible insight with addicting melodies and hooks.• Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I have no shame when it comes to music, but I might not shout at the top of a mountain admitting I think One Direction’s latest album is incredible.

They play five to seven songs and we play 11 or 12 per hour. I am also of the belief that television has taken over the morning. When I was a kid, the radio was on when I got up every

morning. Now it’s the TV, and what is it? Talking heads sitting at a desk offering weather, traffic, inane entertainment news. By the time people get in the car they’ve had people talking to them for 45 minutes to an hour. So just play me a song. The other factor is [Nash Icon morning host] Marty McFly, who is a really likable talent and does a good job blending music with information. Those are the major factors. Are you concerned listeners will tire of hearing that great blast from the ‘90s the third or fifth time they hear it? I think about it every single day. It keeps me up, quite frankly. The fact is, a hit is a hit for a long time. No question you can go from “oh wow” to “oh no” very quickly. But ask the Classic Hits or Classic Rock stations if they’re making any new gold. They’re not. One of the keys is shuffling songs in and out. And we also play currents that have established themselves. The combination of currents and recurrents that differ month to month and keeping the gold fresh is a mix that works well. We’ve played Thomas Rhett’s “Die A Happy Man” 1,345 times since Dec. 2, 2015 and it still scores a +2.7 in M Score. It’s a top 15 song on the station [because] good songs are embraced by listeners. No gold plays that much, and they were all hits. Are you replicating Icon’s success elsewhere? Not to the extent we’ve seen in Nashville. In some markets, Icon stations have been relegated to poor signals, or they may be in a situation where the PD isn’t giving it the attention we are in Nashville. Maybe it’s not as sexy and that could be part of the reason it isn’t No. 1 other places around the country. But I still think it has a place in markets where there are one or two newer Country stations if proper care is given. And it does take a little more care. I really have to look at each hour and say, this current goes with this gold, or it doesn’t. What’s the predominant tempo of the hour? The other beautiful thing about Icon relative to a contemporary station is we have a lot more female music to select from. We can create a better variety of gender and tempo. I called this the summer of ballads in terms of current Country music. With Icon, we have more flexibility to moderate whatever the trend is with new music. Does Nashville have too many Country stations? Just like Rome is Catholic, Nashville is Country. People want to stay in touch with what’s happening in their hometown. So maybe they’re not P1s, but there’s that allegiance to put it on the dial someplace. Are you feeling the iHeart “Big Legend” translator at all? No, and I can’t figure out why they didn’t take it AC. There’s only one in the market and they could create some audience. Plus, Nash Icon is out doing things. We’re part of the fabric of the town and you need to be that, too [to compete]. You can’t just play back-to-back music. Do you see any parallels between Nashville and what’s happening with KPLX (The Wolf) & KSCS/Dallas? The Wolf plays a lot more current music, but they also play gold that KSCS doesn’t. And The Wolf isn’t just the No. 1 Country station, it’s the No. 1 station in the market. So maybe the audience does have interest in a wider variety of country. What does that say about current country music? Just look at the [PPM ratings] charts you publish every month and show me five markets where listening is up from a year ago. I don’t think you can. That answers the question. Turning to Nash-FM WKDF, how is the new makeup of the morning show working thus far? The audience is warming up to the combo of the three and we’ve seen that in the ratings. It’s not exploding because other stations in the market are doing things, including WSM-FM. iHeart is aggressively marketing their morning show. We are seeing TSL and share increasing and the show is doing well in other markets including Detroit. And it’s stabilizing and growing in New York, too. We’re very confident we have good people, they’re a good team and 2017 will be very positive. –Chuck Aly

American Soul LLC’s Phil Vassar puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WLVA/Lynchburg, VA. It’s now WYYD, a Country station. The first time I heard myself on the radio was on WYYD. My single “Carlene” had just come out and I was doing their morning show. When my alarm went off to wake me up, my song was on the radio. I thought I was dreaming. You never get tired

of hearing your songs on the radio. I’ve been interviewed by people who had absolutely no idea who I was. In radio, guys will sometimes come over to country from pop, and not know I’m a piano player and a songwriter. One time a guy asked, “Do you write songs?” and I’d had 10 No. 1 songs at that point. And then he said, “Well I didn’t know you wrote, but I hear you’re a whale of a guitar player!” The PD called me later to apologize. But most of the guys in radio are really fun. It’s always hard to travel with your kids. Mine are grown now, but I see it all the time – parents lugging baby seats through airports, with that look on their faces. I know that look. I’ve been that guy. (laughs) You just want to help them! Every time I’m at a truck stop I pick up honey buns. It’s the worst food in the whole wide world for you. And I’m such a workout fanatic and try to stay healthy. But there’s something about those honey buns and those freaking apple pies. I would love to have sushi with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the two living Beatles. I haven’t done a new album in seven years. I’ve got a lot to say. It’s fun to have new material (American Soul) after so long. I’m going to try to do as many records as I can now. I think I’m on a roll. The most redneck thing I’ve done lately is probably pee outside. I’ve got 10 bathrooms, but sometimes I’ll just go outside and pee off the back porch. I wish I had written “Yesterday” by The Beatles or George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman). They’re both really cool, melodically and lyrically. My least favorite interview question is “Boxers or briefs?” I’m like, “Seriously? Who wears underwear anymore?” I would love to be stuck in Chicago. I love the energy, the people. There’s something about that Chicago/Milwaukee/Midwest area. I got to be in Chicago when the Cubs won the World Series. That’s hard to beat.
