Agenda

• Terminology

• Major Players

• What’s different about cloud based systems?

• Migration Preparation

Page 4: Cloud lms

What are we really talking about?

• Discovery Layer – An alternative interface/search engine to a library’s

OPAC, although some do search digital content as well

• Web-scale Discovery Service – An alternative interface/search engine that

simultaneously searches BIB records, journal articles, digital content

– Major differentiator is central index, although some also use Z39.50

• Library Management System (aka ILS) – Total replacement for locally installed system

What’s different than your current ILS? • No local server(s)

• No up-front license or hardware costs – Annual subscription pricing

• Upgrades/patches applied centrally with little or no downtime

• Back-end (ACQ, CAT, CIRC) is de-coupled from public interface – possible to mix and match

• Heavy emphasis on e-resource management

• Central depository of shared records (print and e)

Page 9: Cloud lms

Preparing to migrate • Clean up your records!

• Identify all sources of records/data regarding e-resources and local digital collections

• Ask lots of questions about what can be migrated/imported and how

• How will authentication be handled?

• Possibilities for exchange of data between ILS and finance system

• Focus on workflow change from the get-go
