We are very pleased to welcome you to engelbert strauss. In this latest issue of our REDWHITE magazine you will find new product developments as well as exclusive insights into our company. Furthermore, we will endeavour to update you about new plans and introduce you to some of the people behind our brand and the red white ostrich logo.

A completely new generation of workwear is the foundation for our collection e.s.dynashield. Outstanding flexibility combined with the highest comfort and extreme robustness, we have developed the fabric specifically for this clothing line and we are presenting it here.

“Make fashion work”, we endorse the working world. This is why we utilize the input of young graduates with regards to our products and cooperate with the most renowned fashion schools throughout Germany. We would like to promote young talent and spark enthusiasm for the workwear industry.

We aspire to actively shape the advancement of new technologies within the working world. Currently we are working with a research team from the Technical University of Dresden to develop intelligent clothing for robots. Together we hope to create smart solutions for the future.

Ultimate flexibility, pleasant to wear, now women can benefit from the collection. We are launching the e.s.dynashield ladies range in spring/summer 2017.

In addition to the trousers, the e.s.dynashield will be expanded to include cargo trousers, functional shorts and jackets for men and women. The products are all made of bXeric® double weave, a material specially developed by engelbert strauss.

Fresh colours and casual styles – at our customers' request all garments are now available in cement/graphite, cobalt/pacific and hazelnut/chestnut. This means that the products can be combined easily with existing collections.

Before they are actually used, the products are put through their paces by our test wearers. Reinhard is one of the testers. “These products are just right for my line of work, because I am constantly on my knees and up again all day long. The trousers are very durable especially in those areas that are subject to a lot of wear, like the knees. And despite their durability, they are still very comfortable. I have never had products that were so pleasant to wear," says the tiler.

Over the past few months our development team has been working intensively on designing a material that is abrasion resistant, offers flexibility of movement and is very pleasant to wear. The result is the material bXeric® double weave fabric used to make the products of our new e.s.dynashield collection.

Hard on the outside, soft on the inside - the special mix of polyamide and elastane plus the unique double weave

technology are the secret ingredients of the bXeric® double weave material. The outside of the material is extremely durable whilst the inside is pleasantly soft on the skin. The products of the e.s.dynashield collection are ideally suited to tradesmen and women who move a lot and are constantly up and down on their knees.

The fabric is characterized by extremely good levels of moisture absorption, is quick drying, water repellent and breathable. The special yarn within the fabric is extremely lightweight and offers a unique level of flexibility.

Textile finishing team

Personalisation of workwear has been one of our core fields of competence for the past 30 years. We use high quality textile finishing equipment to embroider, print and laser logos onto company outfits, turning them into unique items. We have more than 120 embroidery machines in-house to cope with large, medium and small orders. Our experienced internal team of advisors are perfectly familiar with the different personalisation processes.

More than two thirds of the engelbert strauss workwear is produced in South East Asia: in Laos, Bangladesh, and Vietnam. Some of the local production facilities, which employ more than 10,000 people manufacture exclusively for engelbert strauss. They specialise in handling our robust fabrics and attaching a multitude of pockets. They have in-depth technical know-how and are among the best in their respective countries.

We manufacture products in Europe, Africa and Asia, currently 31 countries in total. We have long standing business relationships with most of our production partners and suppliers.

We have selected production facilities in Asia that manufacture exclusively for engelbert strauss. We work with our partners on-site to directly coordinate the pro-duction processes for our products, from the production of the materials through to sizing and sewing.

Every well made product starts with high-quality raw materials. Our work materials need to satisfy very high technical performance values. We attach great importance to the durability and comfort properties of our products which is why we often arrange for our materials to be produced uniquely to our specifications.

In addition to the choice of raw materials and the right thread composition, colour stability is very important for engelbert strauss workwear.

Due to the use of various materials, natural fluctuations in the properties of the cotton and colour changes as a re-sult of UV, colour management plays a central role in this process. To guarantee that colours remain the same for many years, we have developed our own colour formulas.

engelbert strauss dyes the yarns first, then the special patterns are woven. For instance this is how engelbert strauss checked pattern for the e.s.fusion gastronomy collection is created.

The woven raw material is wound onto large reels, then sent for cutting. Supported by large plotters, the material strip is cut in several layers and the parts are then bundled. Experienced seamstresses create our garments in several steps on various production lines.

Our work trousers in particular are very detailed with many pockets, thus requiring expert and experienced employees in our sewing department. In addition to the yarns specified by engelbert strauss, the use of the correct machines as well as their configuration is crucial.

State-of-the-art technologies and trained staff help us to implement our ideas. We set ourselves high standards in terms of the design and function of our products. Every step within the production process has been carefully coordinated. Extensive checks are conducted during the entire production process.

RIGHT AT THE FOREFRONTWe were awarded the 'Most popular family company' prize two years running. We took place 22 in the overall ranking which means we are one of the top 100 family-run companies in Germany. We improved our ranking by eleven places compared to last year. We also received the 'Top National Employer' for the second time. We were also nominated for the 'German Brand Award 2017'.

e.s. wins business awards once again

engelbert strauss is one of the top 100 most popular family-run companies in Germany. This is the result of the latest Germany-wide survey by Deutschland Test, Focus-Money and a reputed research institute. More than 106,000 people were asked to grade 229 selected family companies on a scale from 1 (excellent) to 5 (poor). The objective was to identify family companies and brands that were particularly respected by the consumers.

We also won the 'Top National Employer 2017' in the category 'Clothing, shoes and sports equipment' again. This means we are one of the best employers in the country. More than 100,000 employees from various industries evaluated companies in Germany with workforces in excess of 500.

The survey, which is one of the largest of its kind in Germany, was conducted by Focus in cooperation with Xing and kununu. Survey participants were asked for instance how satisfied they are with the management style of their line manager or what career prospects they have. Also, they were asked if they would recommend the company.

As a specialist supplier in the workwear sector, we are known to many people, but not everybody. Which is why it is doubly pleasing that we were awarded these two prizes," says Steffen Strauss.

The Rat der Formgebung and the German Brand Institute have nominated us for the ‘German Brand Award 2017’ in two of its categories ‘Fashion’ and ‘Employer Branding’.

There are so many possibilities in the workwear world. Lead designer Claudia explains why the potential in the sector is so large and what opportunities there are for young talented persons.

What distinguishes the workwear world?Claudia: workwear is an inexhaustible range. We merge the know-how we have from various sectors to interpret our task in a completely new way. This starts with the function and material, through to the design.

Fashion and workwear. How does that go together?Claudia: really well in fact. Our motto in the design department at engelbert strauss is 'Make fashion work'. We focus just as much on design and creativeness as we do on function and quality.

The e.s.vision cross line is a real innovation in the market. What makes this collection so special?Claudia: The cut protection trousers from the collection are made up of seven layers and are extremely comfortable to wear. We have a registered patent for this development. The entire collection combines all functions, such as dirt

protection, pockets and durability. The design is also given a new meaning here. The prints make the products unique.

engelbert strauss would like to develop lots of unique products. Which is why the company is searching for new employees. What qualities do new staff require?Claudia: There is plenty of room for creativeness in our company. That is why we are looking forward to creative people who bring with them a breath of fresh air and the motivation to apply their previous know-how, even from other sectors, into the workwear world.

Is that why we recruit in the fashion schools?Claudia: We have cooperated with reput-ed fashion schools throughout Germany for many years. To highlight the potential of workwear, we are currently cooperating with the fashion schools on several projects. Here, too, there are no limitsas far as creativeness is concerned.

In regards to our products we are proud to utilize the input of young graduates. In order to attract creative and talented people for future products, we are working with the most renowned fashion schools throughout Germany.

At first, the task presented to the fashion schools seems unusual for a workwear supplier, this is exact-ly our aim. “We want to show that there is a lot more to workwear than just durable and strong materials. Workwear is cool, casual and offers a lot of creative potential. That is why it is important for us to show young designers the entire scope of the sector,” says Steffen Strauss.

Various teams from throughout Germany each work on different projects. “We firmly believe that the workwear sector offers a wealth of individual opportunities for further development. There is also huge potential in particular in terms of colours, forms and technical materials,” says Steffen Strauss.

engelbert strauss is the first company in Europe to use robots to pick orders and has integrated made-to-measure workflows into its IT infrastructure.

European logistics prize 2016

In our newly created returns warehouse in Frankfurt we and our logistics partners focus on innovative solutions: our employees no longer go to the shelves, the shelves with the goods come to the employees, fully automated. There are 75 robots available to transport 800 shelves. They replenish stocks by bringing products to the employees at their permanently installed work stations. The robots align themselves on the QR codes attached to the floor and the intelligent software in the background. We were awarded the ‘German Logistics Prize 2015’ and also the ‘European Logistics Prize 2016’ for this innovative solution. Every year the European Logistic Association (ELA) presents this award in Brussels to honour those companies in Europe that produce the best logistic concepts.

Our new system shows that man and machine can work hand-in-hand. When checking returned goods human evaluation is paramount and robots are used to move the goods. This helps to make our employees’ work less arduous and hopefully more pleasant.

"In addition to fast dispatch, the immediate exchange of the goods is hugely important for us. As the company focuses on size-related production, such as clothes and shoes, it is important to have efficient processes when dealing with returned goods," says Steffen Strauss.

MAKE IT WORKHand in hand with 'e.s.robotics'

We want to play an active part in designing the further development of new technologies in the world of work. Our goal is to provide support for difficult decisions and to find clever solutions. At the moment we are working with a research group from the Technical University of Dresden to develop intelligent clothing for robots.

In cooperation with the Software Technology Group of the Technical University of Dresden and under the name 'e.s.robotics', we will design intelligent clothing for robots into which fine sensors and state-of-the-art high-tech are installed that measure and replicate human movements.

The human movement is saved and transferred to the robot. This allows the robot to copy certain movements and assume work tasks. For example, it can lift and put down heavy packages or objects. In this way, humans and robots work hand-in-hand. This is a huge help to people at work.

Replenishment always at hand!

As tall as a four story building and as wide as a premier division football goal. The 5,500 most popular items are kept stocked in our fully automated replenishment warehouse at our workwearstore® in Oberhausen. The so-called paternoster is integrated into the retail floor. If you require a product that is not on the shop floor, we can dispense it via the paternoster. “The paternoster gives us a high quality presentation and at the same time functions as a compact small parts storage” says Steffen Strauss.

Our proven ‘click and collect’ principal in our workwearstore® near Frankfurt am Main shows how we also focus on multichannel solutions. Customers can simply order their goods via the internet and then pick them up in the store. Availability of goods can also be called up via the online portal.
