All the world’s a stage and mostof us are desperately unrehearsed.“We started to work with Steve when we were lookingtowards a more stable life - buying a home, dealing withdebt - (grown-up things). We now own our home, and aremore reasonable about our debts. Steve is very patient(at least outwardly) towards our fairly lackadaisicalapproach to our finances. He keeps us on top of our choices, and our investments slowly grow.”

GATEWAY THEATRE 5
I first became acquainted with Closer Than Ever as a young theatre artist. I immediately connected with the exuberant melodies and the masterful storytelling within every song. Each individual number is a
perfectly-crafted short story.Although I have loved Closer Than Ever for
more than twenty years, I don’t think I truly understood its full significance until recently. These days, my friends and I are living through what the characters in this musical experience: aging parents; empty nest syndrome; divorce, remarriage; and asking the questions “how did I get here?” and “where do I go next?”
In Crossing to Avalon, Jean Shinoda Bolen writes, “The midlife passage is, at bottom, a quest to find one’s soul, and it is not uncommon to find people at this stage of life
embarking on all sorts of physical and spiritual pilgrimages in an effort to find an ineffable something, a symbolical Holy Grail.”
This is an apt description of the themes of this play. Each character in the show is in search of something—not exactly sure what will bring fulfillment. It’s a precarious time but also one filled with hope and possibility.
So now that my enthusiasm for the show is tempered with a little wisdom, I am delighted to be directing Closer Than Ever. And I feel so honoured to be collaborating with a gifted cast, a wonderful design team, and my brilliant co-directors Caitlin Hayes and Dawn Ewen. We hope you enjoy the show.

Brad is a Vancouver sound designer who specializes in musical theatre. The question of what exactly that means is the subject of debate and mystery, but since you asked, he’s pretty
sure it’s something like “presenting everything you hear and the manner in which you hear it.” Although, he claims no knowledge of the whispers in your ear telling you to come see more Gateway shows. You’ll also hear Brad’s work at Arts Club and Patrick Street Productions shows throughout the year. In the meantime, he’s probably on his bike with some sound equipment strapped to the rack.

Mistress and mayhem, served with a twist.
With his wife out of town, a foolproof alibi from his best friend, the perfect location outside of Paris, and a Cordon Bleu chef serving up a gourmet taste of passion, Bernard has it all figured out…or does he?
One missed phone call rapidly escalates a simply pleasurable evening with his mistress into a complicated night of mistaken identities, confused alibis, double adultery, and a “Suzette” as well as a “Suzanne,” the
perfect recipe for a frisson of hilarity—who wouldn’t want dinner with a dollop of hysterical hijinks?
This bawdy bedroom farce from the playwright of Boeing-Boeing will have you laughing
and crying (of laughter, of course). Gut-bustingly translated from the French by popular British comedic playwright Robin Hawdon.
“Hurtling along at the speed of light, [this] breathtaking farce is a near faultless piece of theatrical invention.”–The Guardian
