Change isimminenton ratesFROM April 1, there isgoing to be a significantchange to the businessrate liability for emptyproperties, writes SteveJohnson of Fraser Wood.
Currently, empty prop-erties with a rateablevalue of below £18,000are exempt from payingbusiness rates.
However, from April 1,property with a rateablevalue over £2,600 that hasbeen empty for morethan three months (sixmonths for industrialproperty) will be liablefor 100 per cent businessrates.
If you own an emptyproperty and this changewill affect you then itmight be a good time tosell or let the propertyand consider making anappeal against your cur-rent assessment.
