Three weeks have passed since The Reminder went to Self-Psych's Stop Smoking Clinic. What are the results? Did th~ clinic really work?

For Chuck Renchik, sales representative for Nitelife the clinic was a success.

"I think I've kicked it," he said. "I have no urge to smoke at all, I don't even think about it." JI

At first it was quite difficult. Chuck said he would watch anyone and everyone that was smoking, it's dangerous for someone trying to 'kick the habit.'

During the first week after attending the clinic Chuck admits to having had one cigarette. Then again the next week, he took -a drag off a friend's cigarette, only this ti.me r~acted differently. His body rejected the cigarette and he gagged on that one puff.

To help get him through these awful days Chuck took the advice of the hypnotist, Sue Weinga'rden, and cut down on the coffee and pop. Wherr a craving occured he inhales deeply. (Sue recommended taking a walk, but cold weather steered Chuck off that path.)

Fonfaine felt slJe was looking for an easy ·way to quit smoking and was not really willing to put forth the effort at this time· to work with th~ hypnotism. "I got right in the car after the clinic and started smoking" she admitte·d.

However,'both Fontaine.and Chuck would recommend the clinic to other people, but only if they were willing to work at it and had already determined to give up smoking. .

Though he doubts whether he was truly hypnotized, Chuck felt that the program and the literature got him off to a good start.

"Nobody can make you quit,'.' Chuck said. "you really have to want it."

When "Ghost Story" lights up Clarkston Cinema's motion picture screen this Friday night, it will be the first time in thre~ years that an "R" rated movie has been shown at the family oriented movie house.

,When Dan Daniel, bought the 266-seat theater in October 1978 he vowed never to show an "R" rated' movie. "The Clarkston'

Daniel claims the movie studios cater to , the 17.34 age groop because surveys show theym~e up th~ vast majorJty ot the movie going'pubJic. His dilemma is further compUcated by the fact tha1 he normally shows second run movies. Thus it is very critical Ulat'tHe movie has been popular the first time around if a good audience is to be expected.

For example, two weeks ,ago 'Daniel booked "The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, a "PG',' movie that was mildly' successful the first time around. But at the Clarkston Cinema it attracted only small audiences, despite the $1.50 admission price.. . . " . Daniel reasons a "Neighbors" or "Sharky's Machine", both "R" rated, would have attracted full houses. -

"My only other alternative would have been to raise my prices," said Daniel. "But I wouldn't want to do that. It would be defeating my purpose. The '1.50 is a magiC numb~r."

Daniel would also like to make it clear that "My family far~ will still be my mainfilre." At the most, 25 percent ,oJ the movies' shoWn ' will be "R" rated. And those "R"s that are

In ad­dition; Michigan General Court Rule 727.2(5) requires the Friend of the Court to regularly check the payments to see if enforcement 'is necessary. This can only be done if paymen­ts are made through the office. If payments are made directly, the Friend of the Court will have no record of them, and enforcement ac­tion will be taken.

A parent 'making direct support payments may not receive credit for these payments. Oakland County Circuit Court Ad­ministrative Order 78-2 prohibits the Friend of Court from ,giving any support credit without a court order allowing credit. Even if the custodial parent stipulates in writing that a payment has been made directly, an order must be obtained for credit.

To obtain a credit by stipulation, the Friend of the Couftattorney, or private coun­sel, must prepare the order. This must be typed by the secretary, signed by the custodial parent, and sent to the Court for entry. The Judge's clerk will review the proposed order, and submit it to the Judge for signature. It will then be sent to the Cir­cuit Court clerk, who will file the order, have it entered on the computer, and return copies to the Friend of the Court. The Friend of the Court must then enter the order on its recor­ds, give credit on the computer'records, and mail copies of the order to the parties.

Obviously, each dlrec't payment credit results II) an extreme amount of unnecessary work for the gourt employees, and un­necessary taxpayer ,costs. For this reason, the Courfwill of tan Impose costs of '50.00 to '100.00 for processing a Qredlt order, , ~. ,

He can continue to demand his near '20 an hour wages and most likely have a large hand in bringing about the demise of the domestic automaker and his job.

A more sensible course would be to. take concessions' and, by doing so, helping your employer get back on his feet.

especially since simple compliance with the order requiring payments through the Friend' of the Court would have avoided this expen-se. .

If you and your former spouse want to make direct support, payments, and to avoid the Frlend'of the Court, contact your attorney to obtain"an order permitting this. Most, but not all, Judges .will grant such an order. Be advised, however, that if there is a problem wi~h payments~nd they are being rflade directly, the Frlend·of the Court WI'! have' no records to rely on. tall, 'and he weighs less than a hundred pounds.

When I first met him, in 1961, he was heavier, but still nbt very big. He wore a ' Panama--a straw hat that shielded his face from the afternoon sun. It was June.

He and his wife Irene and children had just traveled by car all the way from Massachusetts, and were now wa,iting at Lenard's Gas station three blocks from my house.

It was his first time in Michigan, and of all places, he was at a gas station on Superior Street on the industrial §ide of Alma. Right across the street was Lobdell's, a long low grimy building that stretched a full block, and even on this sunny day, it looked sooty and broken down and old.

Somehow, it's all mixed together in my mind, like random bits of cloth--the small man in the Panama, who for some reason made me think on Ernest Hemingway, or a movie producer, at least; the grime and boredom of that small midwestern town where I grew up; the' warm sun. It was the hat that's what I imagined movie producers wore, I guess. The hat was like a prop out of South Pacific.

Both he and his wife looked so cosmopolitan, so knowing. I don't remem­ber much of what was said as we exchanged what must have been somewhat awkward hellos. But I remember how fascinated I was by the clipped and elegant New England ac­cent. In my mind, right then and there, I decided here was a mal) who was very wise.

I was right. Throughout the years, we have exchanged

hundreds of letters. His letters to are chronicles·-of joy, of anger, bemusement, frustration, and always that silly humor period. They are a journal otone man's

Several years ago, he and Irene packed father-in-law. their bags and moved to California. His Loveya,pop. health was failing fast and the doctors said move to a warmer climate--or else. With great regret, he left Massachusetts town where he had lived all his life, and moved to the desert. In the letters that followed, he nipped at the heels of fate for making him go. He truly is a Yankee at heart, and with its dry raspy winds, fitful torrential rains, the brownish lan-­dscape and empty skies, the desert to a die· hard New Englander is anathema.

But beneath the bloody little battles he has fought with Fate, I suspect he knows the decision to "go West" probably saved his life.

Despite the stream of invectives he took so much relish in using to describe his great dislike for the desert-·mudhole, dry gulch haven (he said it didn't deserve to be capitalized), Palmdale-on-the·Bulge· he has had some pretty productive years out there. For a long while he worked in a clock shop, fixing clocks. And he has made many good and loyal friends.

Unfortunately, due to a chronic vascular condition, over the past few years he has had to endure many painful and gruelling operations. He has been in and out of the hospital so often, he says he feels he belongs. Through it all, haltingly, but un· failingly, the letters have continued to come.

This would' provide for two lanes In each direction plus a center left turn lane for vehicles entering into the private drives and assisting them in exiting from those driveways."

In a letter to Waterford Township, Riley in­dicated "We have not programmed actual construction funds, only preliminary engineering. This is due both to funding problems within the department and other areas of the state that are also experiencing rapid growth and critical congestion

working on Dixie Highway south of Ander­sonville Road have begun a drive to get a traf­fic light installed where the busy 4-lane highway meets traffiC from Waterfall and Harvard Plazas.

Michigan State police statistics show that Dixie Highway in Waterford Township had more accidents (554) than any other stretch of highway In the state of Michigan last year. The stretch from Andersonville:Road to Hat- . chery Road had 486 accidents alone in 1979 and 1980.

In the vicinity where residents are asking for the traffic light there are two shopping centers, Our Lady of the Lakes Church and School and the Waterford Post Office. All have indicated a desire for the traffic light.

But this isn't the first time a drive for better traWc control in that vicinity has taken place. As early as 1976- the Department of State Highways and Transportation has noted correspondence on the matter.-

Before Waterfall Plaza was even built, the owners of Harvard Plaza campaigned to clear the conge§tion on ,Dixie Highway in front of their shopping center,

Unfortunately for the shopping center owners the request never got off the drawing board.

In 1977, state representative Claude Trim indicated his support for a fifth lane. In a let­ter to Waterford Township Supervisor James Seeterlin in January of 1977 Trim said, "I per­'son ally believe that the five-lane highway is the way to go ... I am commited to that, but I am also concerned as to the amount of lights that will be needed.

"At the present time, there could feasibly be one at the K-mart mall, one in front of the mini-mall (Waterfall and Harvard), the already existing light at Andersonville, and I have received a package of over 500 names asking for a signal at Rockcroft Street (at the base' of Waterford Hill In Independence Township), as well as a light at the new (district) court location." .

In 1978, Riley again reiterated the depar-tment's plans to widen Dixie Highway to five lanes.

He said Our Lady of the Lakes has requested two hun­dered letters, the Post Office many more, and several merchants in Waterfall, enough to display on their countertops.

Metzger said the purpose of the letters was only to get the ball rolling. We're not sure what is the proper course so we decided to get a letter campaign going in hopes that the. township or whomever would take the ball tnrough the proper channels.

The Clarkston Varsity Basketball i team seems to have slipped a little in the past week. Tuesday they squeaked past Bloom· field Hills Andover and Friday they lost a tough game to league rivals Rochester. Both games were away.

Clarkston won the opening tip-off, but the ball was promptly stolen. Junior Ray Kubani scored Clarkston's only four pOints of the fir­st quarter, and it took him three minutes to make them. For the final five minutes of the first quarter, the Wolfpack could not score and allowed Andover to catch up for a score of 4-4 at the end of the first eight minutes.

The Barons scored first in the second quarter to take the lead. Free throws by Junior Rick Williams and Senior Duane Cahill put the Wolves back on top. Andover .recovered and went ahead. They stayed there until the final seconds of the half. Scott Temple stole the ball allowing Clarkston to score, making the halftime score 18-17 in favor of Clarkston. )

Although Kubani was the first to score in the second half, the Barons soon took the lead. It bounced back and forth until the Wolfpack spurted ahead to a six-point lead 31-25. Thjs caused Andover te call time out. A drive under the basket by-Mike Dearborn provided Clarkston with its largest lead of the game, 33-25. Andover scored three more and the quarter ended with'Clarkston leading 33-28.

Foul shots by the Barons brought the . score within one point, but Junior Mike Mc­Cormick scored to make the margin three. The Barons had a chance to tiei! up .onafree lhr!.:lw, !lut ~.)~n!'l. "ioli:!lion nullified th~ tying .. pOint. Kuban. and McCormick each scored ~ • points to make the tally 43-37. A clear basket by Sophomore Craig Kulazewski with seven seconds left was called off by the refere~. The official thought that a Clarkston player had touched the ball before it had gone through the net. He was mistaken, as it was an Andover player. This left the final score at 43-37.

Kubani was the high scorer with 20 pOints. He scored 10 of his team's 15 field goals. His high mark was largely due to the "Hillsdale" offense that Coach Gary Nustad used. Although that offense had been used quite frequently by last year's team, this has been the first time that it has been successful for

Nustad was somewhat disappointed in the sloppiness of his team's play. He seemed Qlad that it was over and was looking towar­ds Rochester, "we're really pouring for Friday night."

UnforttJri'ately, Nustad's "pouring" wasn't enough to overcome the Falcons of Rochester on Friday. Clarkston got off to an acceptable start, scoring first and preventing Rochester from scoring for almost the first four minutes. At the end of the first quarter Clarkston led 10-6. The Falcons almost caught up, but the Wolfpack still held the lead at the end of the first half ,21-20. .

Rochester scored first in the second half and took the lead for the first time. The lead bounced back and forth for three minutes un­til Temple scored to make it 27-24. The Falcons tied it, but under heavy press, Mc~ Cormick took the ball along the baseline to score the final points of the third quarter. The Wolfpack led 33-31 going into the final eight minutes of play.

Rochester scored ten points to Clarkston's two to make their lead six pOints with only a few minutes in the game. Clarkston then missed some key free throws, but managed to catch up within one with fif­teen seconds on the clock. With 5 seconds left, the Falcons called time out to relieve the full court press of CI~lfkston. Then with three ticks on the board, the Wolves committed an intentional foul to try to get the ball. That failed as the Rochester player sank both his shots icin'g the game~ The finals score was 47.~44.~OC"~$l~r~ . ,t,

Clarksfon actually1scored more field goals than Rochester; 18-1('), but they were beaten at the foul line. The Falcons were 15-25 while the Wolves were only 8,13. Nustad pOinted to four factors that caused the loss, they were out-rebounded for the first time 21-16, they were out"scrapped at key times, they missed important free throws and they committed 20 turnovers. 'According to the coach, if any of these areas had been better, they would have won the game.

It seems that the Wolfpack is now math­matically eliminated from the league cham­pionship. With that in mind, Nustad said his team will have to "set sights on other things." •

Grapplers Prepare for. Key: Matches ,with Matt Shutout

The Clarkston Wrestling team must have had their more difficult' work-outs during practice last week. They were idle in tour­nament play, the first time in three weeks. Their only match was against a Very~ak Waterford Mott team. The grapPler.'s se nd home contest was also their secon shut­out. They won by a score of 76-0. This was made easier by the .fac,t that Mott only produced five' men out of a possible thirteen to wrestle. . '

Four of the five matmen for Clarkston pin­ned their opponents. Jeff Miracle, Andre Gourand, Bruce Burwitz and Mark Karrick took those honors. Todd Thompson won by a 12-1 decision; The win makes Clarkston 4-0 in the Greater Oakland Activities League and undefeated in dual meets.

Coach Rick Detkowski is looking forward to this Thursday's crucial double dual meet. It will be held at Clarkston High School star­ting at 6:30. tt is Parent's Night, and the last meet of the year, so he hopes to have a big crowd. The grapplers will face league rival Lake Orion, which is also 4-0 in GOAL, and Hazel Park, the only team to beat them in the Oakland County Tournament. This meet could hold many possibilities for. the Clarkston pinpack. It should decide the league, and, if they win both, they would be the first Clarkston team to have a perfect season .

"We will finish the year undefeated," said a confident Detkowski of his team, which has moved up to 6th in the state rankings.
