Schedule for review, 18 Feb 2005Thursday afternoon (Len only): hour with land people as per availability

FRIDAY

9:00 to 11:00: Reporting on Year 1.5 by DJC & cluster leaders (Qi-Lusch, Brent/Nathan (also for Declan/Clair, Magezi, Nganga), Jeff/ Alagarswamy (also for Ruth), Bryan, Jenny, Marianne). Presentations will focus on initial results, methods, problems, plans for next year, and list of drafted & planned pubs. Discuss land/atmosphere boundary issues.

11-3: Len & Dan meet with land groups (Dan for Bryan, Qi, Lusch, students; Len for DJC, JMO & students) . Questions to discuss: how to include changing biomass within LU classes (e.g., with changing rainfall, fuelwood harvesting, grazing intensity), incorporating case studies, multi-agents etc .

12: Lunch (Sindhu)

3-5: Meet as whole group. Hear back from Len, Dan & Jean (her report). Discuss in terms of planning next year or two. Also discuss other projects, post-biocomplexity possibilities (e.g., climate/health).

Update on regional climate stuff

• Purdue going, will benchmark; • Incorporating a higher resolution 4 km2 box (Mt.

Kenya to Mt. Kili). Processing takes 3x longer;• NCAR data available, need to decide on time

period (2035-2045?) for the 4 “corners” (controls & sensitivity);

• After the initial corners, will do land / climate iterative (decadal?) runs;

• Sent data to Nganga (6 months of data)

Crop-Climate (Jeff & Alagarswamy)

• Welcome to Alagarswamy• Had a good visit with Phil Thornton, • Doing first runs on CERES-Maize, • Looking for yield data and technology info for

validation. • Will send someone from ILRI to the field to get info on

farming systems including technology used in case study areas (also look for info AHI, KARI)

• Soils data: Phil shared a database based on FAO but with pedons, higher resolution & more complete. Will create a suitability index (will be used in LTM as well).

Land• Jing (analyzing MODIS): question of how to create functions for pixels without a land cover

class. Maybe go with latitude bands? Degree or ¼ degree? • Land cover: Nate working on new Africover/GLC hybrid. We found a problem with

Africover’s regional cover in northern Kenya, so using Africover’s agricultural class distributions and GLC’s natural cover distributions.

• Sigismond: looking at possibilities of research: resilience of Maasai, impact on LU of conflict in northern Kenya/Uganda, impact of transition of economic reforms in Tanzania on agricultural system and land use.

• Sarah (welcome!): interested in how to apply spatial statistics to Clip issues, e.g., analyzing data not collected randomly, space/time interaction model (e.g., RS data), up-scaling from site to regional scale.

• Ben: wrote reports on urban trends, fuelwood. Now looking at possible climatic effects on land use, e.g., LUC on ecological gradient on Mt. Kili: where is the rainfall limit of cropping, how does this change over time, what will be the effect of climate change on the crop/pastoral boundary?

• Jianjun: evaluating land cover data sets (IGBP, GLC, Africover, …) against NDVI & MODIS. Written up, may submit soon. Will use Nate’s LEAF2 translation to run first analyses.

Other• David: would like to bring MSU Deans and others who have contributed

(Dietz, Leroi, Klomparens, Baba, Gray, Gift) to CLIP to show them what we’re doing. April.

• Tom Baerward, the NSF Biocomplexity program director and our program officer, will be coming to MSU around March 25. David is trying to get 1.5 hours of his time to visit with us at CLIP (show him what we’re doing).

• Fred Semazzi: was at the NSF Africa-US meeting a few weeks ago and repeated several times that he would like to get involved in CLIP again. Nathan & Brent will follow up.

• Sharon Nicholson was also at NSF meeting. She will visit CLIP this spring. David sent her an email asking if she would be one of the scientific advisors.
