Strengths – ELA- Grade 10

• CHS tied or surpassed the state’s percentage of correct answers in 17 out of 36 categories

• On the 4 open response questions, CHS raised its average and exceeded the state’s average on 3 questions and was only 1 tenth of a percentage point lower than the state on the 4th question.

Weaknesses – ELA - Grade 10

• Nonfiction – identifying, analyzing, and applying knowledge of the purpose, structure, and elements of nonfiction or informational materials and provide evidence from the text to support understanding (1 question below 70%)

• Fiction - identifying, analyzing, and applying knowledge of the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support understanding (3 questions below 70%)

• Genre - identifying, analyzing, and applying knowledge of the characteristics of different genres (1 question below 70%)

• Figurative Language – identifying and analyzing how an author appeals to senses, creates imagery, suggests mood, and sets tone (2 questions below 70%)

• Structure and Origins of Modern English – analyzing standard English grammar and usage, and recognize how its vocabulary has developed and been influenced by other languages (1 question below 70%)

ELA Department Action Steps

• Continue increasing student exposure to nonfiction and fiction selections and analysis

• Increase student exposure to genre, figurative language and the structure and origins of modern English grammar and vocabulary

• Continue increasing MCAS focus and exposure in Freshman Seminar course

Math Department Action Steps

• If a student receives less than a 70 in Algebra 1 they will be required to retake the course.

• Algebra I study nights each Thursday Night at CHS for Grade 8, 9, 10 students.

• Math Department trialing on-line software to supplement curriculum.

• All students who received Warning or Needs Improvement Status on previous MCAS exam or who are new to the district are offered tutoring services through Academic Support Grant.

• Math department has reviewed test results and will address Geometry area of weakness prior to this year’s exam.

Budget issues that may negatively impact future MATH scores.

• No Department Head to guide curriculum priorities.

• Shortage of Graphing Calculators and in turn classroom technology use across all courses.

• Textbooks are from 2001 and aside from being out of publication and in poor condition, they do not reflect the current push towards acceptance of Common Core Standards.
