Overview The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the workflow for students to complete the American Red Cross cognitive training for BLS, ALS, or PALS; and complete subsequent skills validation with an hStream certified interactive manikin.

Successful completion of this process will award students their American Red Cross digital certificate for BLS, ALS, or PALS.

Students will complete a curriculum that includes a cognitive eLearning course and a manikin skills validation. The student will have unlimited attempts to take the curriculum assignment until successful.

Enrolling in the content

Students will receive the assignment for BLS, ALS, or PALS from their HealthStream administrator.

Note: Some organizations will have the curriculum available for enrollment through the Catalog within HealthStream. If this is applicable to your organization, follow the policy at your facility for enrolling in an American Red Cross curriculum using the Catalog self-enrollment option.

Curriculum Components

The American Red Cross BLS, ALS, and PALS certification curriculums each contain Learning Activities, which must be completed in sequential order. The student will be required to complete the American Red Cross BLS, ALS, or PALS program through the following process:

• hStream ID Creation • Verify Profile Information • Cognitive Course • Cognitive Course Evaluation • Resuscitation Skills Validation

hStream ID Creation

The first learning activity in a BLS, ALS, or PALS curriculum is to create a hStream ID. The hStream ID provides secure cloud-based storage and portability of the student’s digital certificate(s), even if the student leaves the organization. Additionally, the credentials created during the hStream ID learning activity are used to log into the Resuscitation Skills app on the iPad and perform the manikin led skills validation.

Select the Start button for the learning activity: Create hStream ID, to create your hStream ID.

Scoring Dashboard

After you have completed the required number of compressions, ventilations, and/or CPR cycles, your performance will be calculated automatically, and the scoring dashboard will appear as shown below.

Note: You can end the skills check early by tapping the End Skills Check button; however, you will not obtain a score.

The scoring dashboard shows your overall score, the radar chart, and text feedback on your performance.

The radar chart is a graphical representation of your performance according to the individual key CPR metrics in a particular skill. The goal is to have as much coloration in the radar chart as possible. The fuller the chart, the higher the score.

In the example below, the student performed well with ventilation rate, chest compression depth, chest compression release and the required number of chest compressions, as noted by the extension of the coloration to the outside border. Metrics that lowered the student’s overall score were the ventilation volume, compression rate and the Chest Compression Fraction (CCF), or time off the chest, represented by lack of coloration to the outside border.

Compression Matrix

Compressions that are too fast will appear as dots in the right column. Compressions that are too slow will appear as dots in the left column. Compressions that are too deep will appear in the bottom row. Compressions that are too shallow will appear in the top row. Hollow dots along the top of the matrix represent compressions with poor chest recoil. The goal is to keep the dots within the center square.

Chest Compression Fraction Indicator

The compression indicator converts to a timer between compression cycles. The number in the center represents seconds off the chest and will correspond to the Chest Compression Fraction (CCF) calculation on the scoring dashboard. When performing CPR, the goal is to minimize interruptions between cycles to less than 10 seconds.

Ventilation Indicator

Ventilation volume is represented by a change in coloration of the lung symbol. Proper ventilation volume is shown as green, while overinflating the lungs is shown as red coloration. If the lung symbol changes to grey, the ventilation volume was too low.

An audio tone also indicates if the ventilation was performed correctly.

Ventilation force is represented by a change in the coloration of the lung outline. When a ventilation is delivered with too much force, the lung is outlined in bold red.
