CLIMTECHBackground information on Finland

- energy intensive industry- cold climate, long distances- few domestic energy sources- 70 % of energy imported

- responsediversified and effective energy systemresearch and development

Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)

1999-2002Objectives of the programme

to support mitigation of climate change, and attainment of the national climate change mitigation objectives

by contributing to technological choices, research, development, commercialisation and implementation.

The time scale for the technologies studied extends to about 2030

The programme will be implemented from 1999 to 2002 and funding from National Technology Agency (Tekes) is EUR 3 million out of the total budget of EUR 4 million

CLIMTECH

Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)

1999-2002

CLIMTECH projects (28) have been roughly divided to six subject fields:

1. Renewable energy sources and distributed energy production (5)

2. Energy efficiency and industry (6)

3. Non-CO2 greenhouse gases (2)

4. Capture and utilisation of CO2 (2)

5. Models and systems (10)

6. Commercialisation (3)

8 companies and 7 research institutes carry out research work in the CLIMTECH projects. Additionally, several companies participate in financing and/or in executive group working of the research projects.

CLIMTECH

Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)

1999-2002Results

The demand of new technologies will grow strongly due to the restriction of greenhouse gas emissions

Finland has already high-grade energy technologies, e.g. utilisation of biomass fuels, gasification of waste, wind energy technology, diesel engines, power electronics etc.

Export possibilities are expected to grow strongly

New Finnish technology can accordingly be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not only in Finland but all over the world

Technology and Climate Change Programme (CLIMTECH)

1999-2002

The results of the CLIMTECH programme are published in many different ways because of the communicative role of the programme: project reports (mainly in Finnish with English abstracts, some

reports in English; see Internet pages) printed result brochures of individual projects (also in English,

pdf documents from Internet pages) technical final report of the programme (in English) edited CLIMTECH book in Finnish printed English summary of the CLIMTECH book (about 30

pages)

The final reports of the programme will be completed by the final seminar of the CLIMTECH programme (February 2003)

Some example results - Wind Energy

global capacity is 24 000 MW in 2001, 25 % installed in 2001 global market in 2010 is estimated to be 15 000 - 25 000 MW/a present market share of the Finnish industry is about 5 %

in some components higher:

gears 10 - 15 %

generators 20 - 30 %

blade materials ~30 %

ice prevention systems ~100 %

Some example results - Energy use of biomass

modern clean and effective burning techniques available large global potential fuels can base on side-products from agriculture, forestry,

industry and households distributed fuel base fits to distributed generation of heat

and electricity need for expensive infrastructure limited short construction times

SUMMARY

The task of the Climtech programme is to help in the identification of the most significant technological development fields

The results of the Climtech programme can be used in companies in the selection of long term strategies for technology development for domestic and export markets

Technology can offer win-win alternatives to control greenhouse gas emissions
