Weather and Climate
• Weather: the condition of the air and sky at a certain time• Climate: the average weather of a place over many years• Altitude- as altitude varies, climate varies• 1 factor for weather: the angle of sun rays hitting the earth• Tropics: sun hits directly once a year so this area has a hot
climate• Winds: they bring moisture and produce storms and humidity• Climates change as seasons change
Temperature
• A measure of how hot or cold the air is• Temperature and precipitation: the two main ways to
describe weather• Polar Zones: Cold, high altitudes, sun’s below horizon
mostly • Tropics: Warm, low altitudes, sun hits directly most of
time• SI unit of temperature is the Kelvin– Boiling Point is 373– Freezing Point is 273
Climate Graphs
• Curved Lines: show average temperature• Bars: average monthly precipitation (not just
rain)
