Modbus capable sensors and controllers from S+S save energy and costs
Driven by rapidly rising energy costs, there is a growing need for central acquisition,
monitoring and control of power consumption also in buildings. In the automated
“Smart Building” of the future, heating, venting, air-conditioning and further functions
are networked in a bus system that transmits their data to higher control and facility
management levels and vice versa provides for a downstream of control signals to
the devices on demand and on time.
This results in optimised energy efficiency and cost savings. Today, buildings still
account for approximately 40% of all the end-use energy consumed. At the same
time, consumption control regulations are being tightened, e.g. by means of
domestic Energy Performance Certificates introduced in line with European Directive
2010/31/EU.
Intelligent control technology can cut
power consumption by up to 70%.
Nearly 30% of the energy
used by companies is wasted.
Buildings account for approx. 40%
of all end-use energy consumed.
As a pioneer in bus capable sensors and controllers
for facility automation, S+S has long been offering
various THERMASGARD® and THERMASREG® tem-
perature sensors and controllers with Modbus RTU
connection. The portfolio is continuously being ex-
panded. Added devices also include first Modbus ca-
pable HYGRASGARD® humidity and PREMASGARD®
pressure sensors.
Innovation in technology and design
Like all control technology from S+S, these devices are
characterized by a consistent design with several innova-
tive features – such as our patented quick lock for ease of
assembly and splash-proof protection. All products are
manufactured in Germany to our acknowledged standards
of sensible precision and highest quality.
Available now: Sensors from S+S in new Tyr II design
Galvanic isolation
Bus cable and device are electrically isolated from each other to minimise interferences
A key advantage of all Modbus capable devices from S+S:
In housings of our Tyr I design, the display rests under a transparent cover in a bracket with an integrated film hinge to swing out.
MasterModbus
Rugged functional principleIn its specification for the non-proprietary Remote Terminal Units (RTU) com-
munications protocol, which is based on the master-slave principle, Modbus
has become one of the most widely used standards of facility automation.
Each device on the bus has a unique address. Commands are initiated by the
master (PLV or PC). The sensor or controller (slave) on the bus responds to
these commands by setting or changing functional parameters in its registers
and returning e.g. requested measured values, including its address so that
the master can allocate the response correctly. Address and function codes
each comprise 8 bits. By means of a cyclic redundancy check (CRC), a 16 bit
checksum is generated to ensure that commands arrive undamaged. Even
if several controllers or sensors should receive the same command, only the
one that has actually been addressed will act on it.

Modbus systems with sensors and controllers from S+S permit powerful as well as
cost-effective and sustainable solutions for an energy-efficient facility management:
✚ Energy savings through demand and time control of heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning
✚ Central acquisition, surveillance and optimisation of consumption data
✚ Remote monitoring and control intervention over mobile phone and internet
SUSTAINABLE BENEFITS
Thanks to its openness and simple implementation, Modbus meets with
increased acceptance as a bus system for building technology. Even complex
installations do not require much time and labour. Typical examples can be
found from industry to residential housing, including the wide segment of office
and public buildings.
More than 7 million Modbus nodes have been installed in Europe and
North America alone. The devices that “speak” Modbus RTU today are legion.
Hundreds of manufacturers are supporting the protocol.
Fast and simple implementation
Designed for clear views
The Modbus capable wall-mount
sensors from S+S are available
with a two-line display that is freely
configurable over the Modbus port
and provides measured readings on
site. Valid or faulty bus messages
are signalled by a green or red LED,
respectively.
Bus parameters and bus address are
set with DIP switches in the housing.
The display indicates changes for 30
seconds.
