Introduction:

When you travel to a new location, one of the first things that you want to know about the place is the weather. Will the weather be nice? Will it be warm or cool? Rainy or clear? Climate graphs provide people with information about the average weather condi-tions of a location. A climate graph (also called a “climograph”) is a graph that shows the average monthly temperatures and precipitation for a given location. Usually, temperature is represented as a line graph. Sometimes average high and low temperatures are shown as two separate lines. Precipitation is represented using a bar graph. A climate graph is created using basic graphing skills, except for one main exception. The months of the year are located on the x-axis of a climate graph. A climate graph has two different y-axes, and this is what makes them interesting from a graphing perspec-tive. Temperature (in ºC or ºF) is located on one y-axis, and precipi-tation (in centimeters or inches) is located on the other y-axis. To construct the temperature line graph, one uses the temperature y-axis, and the construct the precipitation bar graph, one uses the pre-cipitation y-axis.

1111. The type of biome associated with the place.

2222. The place where the temperature and precipitation were measured.

3333. A scale used to indicate inches of precipitation.

4444. The months of the year. The letters J, F, M, etc., stand for January, February, March, etc.

5555. The temperature scale in degrees Fahrenheit.

6666. A bar graph showing the average precipitation for each month. In this example, the average to-tal precipitation is about 1 inch in January and nearly 4 inches in August. (Note: Values for this

graph are found on the left-hand scale.)

7777. A line graph showing monthly temperature during the year. In this example, the lowest tem-perature is about -5°F in January and the highest is about 45°F in July. (Note: Values for this

graph are found on the right-hand scale.)

Weather vs. Climate The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time. When we talk about climate change, we talk about changes in long-term aver-ages of daily weather. Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. Children today in most areas of the country haven't experienced those kinds of dreadful snow-packed winters, except for the Northeastern U.S. in January 2005. The change in recent winter snows indicate that the climate has changed since their parents were young. If summers seem hotter lately, then the recent climate may have changed. In various parts of the world, some people have even noticed that springtime comes earlier now than it did 30 years ago. An earlier springtime is indicative of a possible change in the climate. There are really a lot of components to weather. Weather includes sunshine, rain, cloud cover, winds, hail, snow, sleet, freezing rain, flooding, blizzards, ice storms, thunderstorms, steady rains from a cold front or warm front, excessive heat, heat waves and more. In short, climate is the description of the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area. Some scientists define climate as the average weather for a par-ticular region and time period, usually taken over 30-years. It's really an average pattern of weather for a particular region. When scientists talk about climate, they're looking at averages of precipita-tion, temperature, humidity, sunshine, wind velocity, phenomena such as fog, frost, and hail storms, and other measures of the weather that occur over a long period in a particular place. For example, after looking at rain gauge data, lake and reservoir levels, and satellite data, scientists can tell if during a summer, an area was drier than average. If it continues to be drier than normal over the course of many summers, than it would likely indicate a change in the climate.

Create a Climate Graph

Choose a data table of a city from around the world. Using the infor-mation from your city’s data table, construct a climate graph for your city. After you have created your climate graph, answer the following analysis questions on a separate sheet of paper. FORMULASFORMULASFORMULASFORMULAS: : : :

ºF = (9/5) ºC + 32 ºC = (5/9) x (ºF - 32) 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters 1 cm = 0.39 inches ANALYSIS QUESTIONSANALYSIS QUESTIONSANALYSIS QUESTIONSANALYSIS QUESTIONS:::: 1. What is the name of your city? 2. In what country andandandand on what continent is your city located? 3. Find the approximate latitude and longitude coordinates for your city. 4. In what hemispheres is your city located? 5. In what climate zone is your city located? 6. What would you expect the climate to be like in this climate zone? 7. What is the hottest month in your city? The coolest month? 8. What month gets the most precipitation? The least precipitation? 9. What is your city’s average yearly high temperature? What is the average yearly low temperature? 10. Make a new data table for your city using degrees Celsius and centimeters. Convert the numbers using the given formulas.

Activity:

It’s a cold and snowy January in St. Louis, Mis-souri, and Christopher is tired of his job. It’s time for a vacation. When Christopher got home from work, he googled “cheap vacations” and went to the first web-site from the search results. The site was called Too Good To Be True Travel. After searching TGTBTT for a few minutes, Christo-pher found several potential trips. Using climate data tables and climate graphs, determine the best climate best climate best climate best climate choicechoicechoicechoice and the worst climate choice worst climate choice worst climate choice worst climate choice for Christopher’s vacation destination. Explain your choices using rele-vant information form the data tables and/or climate graphs. Option #1: Fargo, North Dakota Option #2: Destin, Florida Option #3: Hilo, Hawaii Option #4: New York, New York Option #5: Seattle, Washington
