Watching leaves turn bril-liant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful dis-plays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country.

While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Un-derstanding certain incon-veniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves.

STAININGLeaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals

that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extend-ed period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint.

It’s important to manually pick leaves off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle.

Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or auto-motive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.

CLOGGINGLeaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding fl ow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the wind-shield wipers should be re-moved. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting.

Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear ex-haust pipe.

SLIPPERY SURFACESThe Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the sur-face of roadways can be haz-ardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers

should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off -ramps more carefully.

Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to

accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fi ll potholes, giving the false impression that a road is

smooth and causing dam-age to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them.

Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they

can complicate driving

and fall car care. Motorists

should keep their cars clear

of leaves and use caution on

roadways.

AUTO INSURANCE DISCOUNTS

There is seemingly no end in sight with regard to the rising costs of owning an au-tomobile. From the cost of the car or truck itself to the high prices of fuel, drivers increasingly are on the hunt for ways to curtail the costs of owning an automobile. One way to save some cash is to take advantage of auto insurance discounts you may be eligible for.

Auto insurance company fulfi llment is at record high. However, many discounts may still be available, even if drivers or their agents may overlook them. Fierce competition among insur-ance providers continually adds to the bevy of new dis-counts many are willing to off er to woo new customers.

According to Bankrate.com, which looked at the discounts off ered by auto insurance companies, many companies now off er new discounts to remain com-petitive. If you haven’t shopped around for auto in-surance recently or have not revisited your current policy, you may be missing out on substantial savings.

• Daytime running lights: Four out of the 10 largest auto insurance companies now off er discounts if your vehicle has daytime running lights.

• Low mileage: Don’t take the car out often? Such hab-its may earn you a reward. Around 80 percent of the major insurance companies off er discounts for low mile-age. The insurance com-pany may provide a mile-age tracking device that will report back the actual miles driven to the company.

• Grades: Check with your insurance company if you have a student on the policy.

His or her good grades may qualify you for a discount.

• Occupation: Your occupa-tion also may entitle you to a discount on insurance. In-surance companies believe that people in certain occu-pations or those who spend a lot of time on the road may be less likely to take risks. Find out if your occupation qualifi es.

• Alumni associations and clubs: Certain organizations have teamed with insurance providers to off er discounts to members. Therefore, if you are in a fraternal group, a credit union, an alumni as-sociation, or some other or-ganization, you may eligible for certain discounts. Check with your insurance compa-ny for their affi liate groups, or contact the organization to which you belong for more information.

• Multiple policies: Many in-surance companies will of-fer a discount if you group your policies together into a bundle. Having homeowner insurance, auto insurance and life insurance through one company, for example, can earn you a substantial discount.

Insurance companies have many other discounts avail-able if you ask. For example, if your vehicle has an anti-theft system or environmen-tally friendly components, you may be eligible for a discount. Customer loyalty, paperless billing, paying all your bill at once, being a current or former member of the military or if your ve-hicle is a new model year also may make you eligible for discounts that can drasti-cally reduce the cost of your policy.

Winter Car Care Coupon Specials

WINTER PREP CHECKLISTFall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now.• Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinfl ated, you lose fuel effi ciency, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.• Those who live in particu-larly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to pro-vide more traction and pro-tection than sneakers, so should you equip your vehi-cle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.• Check on the status of your battery and its start-ing power. Cold weather can

put more strain on a car bat-tery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most.• Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to a windshield fl uid that is rated for subzero temperatures. Each of these items will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt.• Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if cou-pled with low coolant levels, can make it diffi cult for the engine to turn over. • Keep jumper cables, a bat-tery booster pack and warn-ing cones in your vehicle. These can come to the res-cue if your battery dies and you’re stranded on the side of the road.

• While you’re stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter, a fl ashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a blanket. These are good emergency items to have in the event your car breaks down in the winter. You can dig your tires out of a snow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increase traction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for a while awaiting roadside service.• Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completely change the defensive tac-tics needed to navigate the roads. A prepared driver is one who is more likely to avoid accidents and make it home safely.

TEENS ARE A BIG DRIVING RISK ON THE ROAD Sharing the road with other drivers means being aware of the abilities of fellow mo-torists. Whenever a person gets behind the wheel of a car, he or she is placed in the direct path of others who may not be as good behind the wheel.

Drivers with the highest rates of crashes and highway fatalities include seniors and teenagers. Although many people are quick to believe elderly drivers are the most dangerous on the road, this isn’t entirely true.

The U.S. Census Bureau pre-dicts there will be 9.6 million people 85 and older by 2030, many of whom may still be on the country’s roadways. Fatality rates for drivers in-crease after age 65, accord-ing to a study by Carnegie Mellon University and the AAA Foundation for Traffi c Safety. For drivers 85 and older, the fatality rate jumps considerably, to about four times higher than the fatal-

ity rate for teenagers. How-ever, some say these rates may be unfairly skewed for seniors. An elderly person’s body is more frail than that of a teenager, and a crash of a similar severity is more likely to kill a senior as op-posed to a teenager, which can unfairly drive up fatality rates for seniors.

The National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration says accident rates for 16- to 19-year old drivers are actually higher than for any other age group. Various factors contribute to the elevated teenager traffi c risk.

• Lower perception of risks: Teens are less likely than other drivers to notice a po-tential threat and to handle it accordingly. It can take time for information gather-ing and experience to devel-op in younger drivers.

• Underdeveloped skills: Teens have had consider-ably less time behind the wheel than others, which

can hamper their ability to maneuver the vehicle and address hazards.

• Taking more risks: Younger drivers tend to speed, vio-late traffi c signals, make il-legal turns, and violate other rules of the road more so than other drivers. This may be to show off to friends or due to overconfi dence in driving abilities.

• Substance abuse: Teenag-ers may have a higher pro-pensity to drink alcohol or use drugs in social settings, which can compromise their ability to drive.

• Distractions: Having mul-tiple passengers in the car, using mobile phones and texting are distractions that can increase the risk of a fa-tal crash.

• Night driving: Many seniors get off the road in the eve-ning because of poor night-time vision. However, teen drivers may be more active at night, increasing the risk for accidents.

While teenage drivers pres-ent the biggest road risks, seniors are not too far be-hind them. Age-related conditions can impede their driving ability, and, should a crash occur, fragility can compound the aff ects of an accident. Teens and seniors are two demographics that may need more driver train-ing and monitoring to keep roads safer.

Lack of experience and confi dence behind the wheel is one factor that contributes to teenagers’ higher rate of driving accidents.

Many Halloween images are depicted with a full moon in the background. Full moons

evoke visions of werewolves baying or vampire bats flut-tering by. But a full moon on

Halloween is actually quite rare. A full moon that occurs on Halloween is actually most often a “blue moon,” or the second full moon of the month. On average, a full moon appears once every 28 days, or the time it takes for the Moon to orbit around Earth and be on the other

side of the Sun. Very rarely a blue moon can occur when the full moon appears twice in one month. The last time a full moon appeared on Halloween was in 2001. The next time Halloween revel-ers will be treated to a full moon on Halloween is Sat-urday, October 31, 2020.

Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. P. P.
