AFFORDABLE SAT PREP COURSE

CLIFTON PARK - Captain is proud to offer SAT Prep with Capital District Consulting, a c o m p a n y

whose mission is self-im-provement.  Thirty percent of the course fee will be do-nated to CAPTAIN programs and services.  SAT Prep spe-cializes in strategies and techniques that all students should know before taking the SAT.  The stated goal of the course is to prevent test anxiety and to fully prepare students to perform at their best on both the math and English portions of the exam.  Colleges often base scholarships on a combination of grades and SAT scores, so underperforming on the test can cost you and your family thousands of dollars in lost scholarships.  Most colleg-es use the SAT scores in admission decisions, so don’t sell yourself short!  Get into the college you want by earning the score you are capable of achieving. Please go to www.capital-districtconsulting.com and register today.  The course fee is $225.00 and classes will run from 7:00-9:00 pm on March 10, 13, 17, 20, 24 and 27th.  Classes will be held in the conference room of CAPTAIN Youth and Family Services in Clifton Park, located at 5 Municipal Plaza—Suite 3. Remember The Heart This February

This month we think of hearts, both literally and figu-ratively, so let’s start with symbols of love. As cham-ber of commerce leader, I am so inspired by the couples who own businesses both large and small within our communities. A so-called “mom-and-pop” store implies that there is a couple working together, running the business (or multiple businesses!), man-aging employees, being involved in the community, yet finding time to raise a family and have a strong relationship with each other. For example, Gregg and Karen McGowan of Capital Interiorscapes have quietly built a strong business for over 22 years, yet volunteer to help at organizations such as the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County or the Malta Business and Professional Association. Also, attendees at the chamber’s Executive Institute program last fall got to see firsthand the re-ally great love story of Neil and Jane Golub, owners of Price Chopper Super-markets. They are known for their philanthropy throughout the capital region community, and it really was a blessing to spend over an hour with them as they shared insights into running a business and keeping the fire burning in their relationship. Happy Valentine’s Day to all the couples out there! But this February is also the time to think literally about hearts – its Heart Month,

a time to remember that Heart Disease is still the #1 killer of men and women, meaning it’s also the leading reason couples’ relationships are suddenly torn asun-der. My wife learned this all too well when she found herself rushing her husband to the emergency room some seven years ago. I came literally millimeters from death at the age of 39, of a very preventable and con-trollable disease. Diet, exercise, and genetics all play a role in curbing heart disease, but the key is to take action. If not for yourself, do it for the one who loves you.

that be you?

HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS WINTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this winter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costel-lo, “The Winter Fund Drive was conceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visitation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the winter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their donations got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLATER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is supported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, including Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only pub-lic funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum memberships begin at $25. Members receive the Museum’s quarterly newsletter “Trim But Deadly,” which fea-tures historic articles, photos and updates on the volunteer’s progress, as well as free admission to the ship. Donations may be mailed to USS SLATER, P.O. Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK

CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have got-ten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned in-come falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depend-ing on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

This ongoing group meets for video based curriculum and discussion each week for 13 weeks. New visitors are welcome, and you can start anytime.
