VALLEY FALLS - The Valley Falls United Methodist Church at 16 State Street in Valley Falls will host a roast beef dinner on Wednesday, April 30. Sittings are at 5 and 6 p.m., with take-outs available at 5:00. The menu will include roast beef and gravy, mashed potatoes, two vegetables, condiments, rolls, and assorted pies. WHERE IN THE WORLD IS

USS SLATER?CAPITAL DISTRICT - A lot of people have been asking this question. To answer, USS SLATER is at Caddell Dry Dock and Repair in Staten Island. Typically, the ship is open to the public in Albany near the beginning of April. This season, after several years of fundraising, the ship has been taken to drydock for repairs to her hull. Drydock-ing is the periodic mainte-nance necessary to maintain the part of USS SLATERs hull that is underwater. Its been over 20 years since the ship has been in drydock, so this project is due. Drydocking is being funded by private individuals and foundations. No government funding is being used for this project. In fact, the Destroyer Es-cort Historical Museum, the non-profit organization that owns and maintains USS SLATER, receives no regu-lar Federal, State, or local government funding. When the drydocking is complete, the USS SLATER will return to Albany and will open to the public. This is expected to be sometime in late May or early June. However, that may change pending un-foreseen circumstances or weather issues. Public hours for the USS SLATER after the return to Albany will be Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ad-mission is charged. SCHEDULE FOR 2014 HALFMOON - The Town of Halfmoon Transfer Station will hold spring cleanup, - April 25, 26, 29, May 2,3. Hours are - Tues-days 8am-12, Fridays 12 5pm, and Satur-

days 8am-3pm. Spring cleanup is limited to town residents only, no contractors. A transfer station permit is required, and can be obtained at the Town Clerks offi ce. You may dump household waste and construction debris free of charge dur-ing the dates above. Metal appliances, electronics and other recyclables can be dumped at no charge all year long. Paint containers must be open and dry, yard waste is accepted. Tires are not free they are charged according to size. No com-bustible or toxic substances allowed. Our Free Shredding Day for Town residents is on May 17th 2014, 9am 11am at the Highway Department, at 322 Rte 146. There is a 3- bag or box limit. SCHAGHTICOKE FAIR 2014 FAIR THEME AND DESIGN CONTEST

SCHAGHTICOKE - Celebrating its 195th year, The Schaghti-coke Fair is very excited to announce the 2014 fair theme as Harvest Your Dreams. The fair will be introducing Harvest Your Dreams into buildings, exhibits, fair entries, and contests dur-ing the week of the fair. Lauren Madigan, a student at Hoosic Valley High School was the winner of last years Whos Your Souper Hero? theme design contest. The contest is open to all currently enrolled high school and college students as well as adults throughout the local area. The selected design will be used on the cover of the 2014 fair brochure, the annual fair t-shirt and for additional marketing purposes. Each student or adult that submits a design entry will receive a one day fair pass to the 2014 Schaghticoke Fair. In addition to having the winners work published, the winner will also receive a one day fair pass with one unlimited ride ticket, a 2014 Harvest Your Dreams t-shirt, a certificate of achievement presented during the week of the fair and will also become an honorary judge for future themed design contests. Participating with Doug is Jean Bakkom, past President of the Sharon Springs Histori-cal Society, a prominent community leader, veteran and to quote Doug an all-around amaz-ing person. At the conclu-sion of the presentation, attendees 18 and over will have the opportunity to win a gift certificate to the dining room at the American Hotel. Registration required.
