Chipola plays St. John’s River in the opening round the FCSAA/Region VIII State Tournament at 11 a.m. (CST) on Friday, May 1. A win would move the Lady Indians to the 4 p.m. game later that day to play the winner of Indian River and Hillsborough. A loss would put Chipola in the 6 p.m. game. The tournament continues May 2 and 3. The top two Florida teams from the FCSAA Tournament advance to the NJCAA National Tournament May 13-16 in St. George, Utah. The Indians lost to Northwest (13-11) on March 14. Cooley was 3 for 5 with a homerun. Lazaro Rivera, Isiah Gilliam, Andrew DiLacqua and Tyler Biggs all hit doubles. Tevelle Clark (1-1) took the loss for Chipola giving up 2 runs on 1 hit. Culver Lamb started the game giving up 7 runs in 2.1 innings. David Wright and Gunnar McNeill also gave up two runs apiece. Chipola beat Pensacola 12-2 in 8 innings on April 11. The Indians scored a 7-4 win over Northwest on April 10. The FCSAA State Tournament is May 8-12 at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland.

Indians are conference champs The Indians baseball team captured their second straight Panhandle Conference Championship winning 11 of their last 12 league games. The Indians jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring a run in the first and third innings and four more in the fourth. The Eagles pulled to within a run at 6-5 in the seventh and tied the game 6-6 in the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Chipola scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk then added three more for a 10-6 final. Chipola travels to Tallahassee Friday, April 24, for the final regular season game at 4 p.m. The Indians play in the FCSAA State Tournament May 8-13, at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Chipola’s first game is Saturday, May 9, at 9 a.m. (CST) against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. BAILEY AND BRYANT DISCUSS ANIMAL PROTECTION AT CHIPOLA Ecosystems, biodiversity, endangered species, protection and preservation were themes of two recent interactive zoological presentations for Chipola Environmental Science. Billy Bailey, Florida Caverns Park Specialist, presented zoological remains to explain concepts of keystone species, niches, adaption, parasitism, habitat destruction. Bailey stressed the importance, and in some cases the perturbation of the organism to the ecosystem. Examples include: beaver keystone species, found in Caverns Park, creating ponds from creeks, thereby increasing the biodiversity; the armadillo, an exotic invasive species, pushing the skunk out of the ecosystem; the Suwanee River Cooter, hunting crustaceans in the ecosystem. Dianna Sue Bryant, Wildlife Rehabilitator and Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer for “Sacred Earth Wildlife Refuge,” also presented information to the students. Bryant brought an Eastern Screech Owl, a Great Horned Owl and a Red-Tailed Hawk, holding the animals on her arm, and teaching the students about their behavior and care. The animals were hit by vehicles, and now partially blind, which prohibits a return to the wild. Dianna recommends contacting local veterinarians who will refer you to her in the case of wild animal injury. Dianna is a protege of Betsy Knight (founder of the Big Bend Wildlife Sanctuary). Dianna is one of five rehabilitators in Florida, and among 1,500 nationwide.
