What is Impressionism? A 19th century type of art that

originated with a group of Paris artists

Impressionist characteristics include relatively small, thin, but still visible, brush strokes.

Impressionists put emphasis on the angle of light in the painting. They use certain colors to highlight the light in the painting.

The name for impressionism was chosen from Claude Monet’s painting “Impression-Sunrise,” created in 1872

What is Impressionism? In an impressionism painting,

colors are applied side-by-side with as little mixing as possible, creating a vibrant surface.

The types of paintings are outside sceneries, and people.

Early Impressionists violated the rules of academic painting. They constructed their pictures from freely brushed colors. They also painted realistic scenes of modern life, and often painted outdoors.

What is the Impact of French Impressionism in America?

After the end of the Civil War in 1865, the United States gained unprecedented international political and economic status. Americans who were fortunate after the war, traveled abroad and learned about European culture.

Impressionism imported from France in the late 19th-century was the first injection into mainstream American art.

Aspiring American artists studied in Europe, especially Paris.

During the mid 1800’s American’s began to value the style of painting, and more American’s began to experiment with the type of art by making their own techniques out of it and trying different things.

By the early 1890s, Impressionism was firmly established as a valid style of painting for American artists.

What is the Impact of French Impressionism in America?

While some American artists only developed the main points of Impressionism from the French, others took much time to pronounce the same things as the French did in their work. They wanted their work to look extremely similar to the French paintings.

In 1886, with a series of brilliant images of New York's new public parks, William Merritt Chase became the first major American painter to create Impressionist canvases in the United States.Eleanor Holding A Shell
