Home for the Holidays
The Christmas season is here again. For some, that thought alone conjures visions
of sugar plums, wooden soldiers, and overpriced electronics. For me, it’s about
good food, trying to stay away from legions of crazed shoppers and attempting to
coax my significant other out of her multilayered and climate controlled blanket
fort.
This month, Click gears up for the holiday season with a ton of compelling
Christmas content. From an interview with DeSoto County's premier Christmas
décor expert, Emily Layson (page 13), to the grand unveiling of what’s sure to be
the hottest shopping spot this holiday season in Tanger Outlets (page 35).
For those looking for a nice quiet night at home, our drinks and recipe features
this month boast a seasonal selection of winter lagers (page 22) and a perfect
winter cocktail (page 26). In addition, our fashion feature this month, “Winter
Wonderland” (page 72) showcases several cozy and classy looks against the
backdrop of the elaborately decorated Banks House in Hernando.
If that isn’t enough to get you inspired, look no further than this month’s featured
book review of Christmas with Southern Lady, Volume II (page 20). This lengthy tome
packs everything you need to get into the holiday spirit, from dazzling décor to
delicious recipes.
So from all of us to all of you: Happy holidays! We hope this annual injection of
Christmas cheer is enough to carry you into the new year and then some.

FOR EMILY AND MICHAEL LAYSON, owners of the Wooden Door, a 15-
year dream to own a furniture store
became a reality this year when their
Goodman Road location opened its doors.
With an eye for interior design and an
average of four to five trees in the Layson
house every year, Emily's expertise in
holiday décor came in handy this holiday
season when the Laysons hosted several
trim-a-tree parties throughout November
to get local residents in the spirit.
Click Magazine: What goes into your trim-a-tree
parties?
Emily Layson: Everybody is interested in making
their tree look like it does in a magazine or on
television. The trim-a-tree parties were small,
about 20 people. We have hors d’oeuvres and
drinks, and I do demonstrations of how to apply
the ribbon to a tree, how to place the topper,
where to put your ornaments around the tree,
things like that.
CM: Which works best: a real trees or a fake tree?
EL: It’s definitely a personal preference. Fake
trees are easy to work with as far as ribbons
and tying things in because the wires in the
branches help to stabilize things. You have a
much tougher battle trying to decorate a real
tree. I personally love a real tree, though. The
look is worth the effort. I have one in my house.
CM: What’s the perfect size for a tree?
EL: It really depends on the home and the ceiling
height. I find that 7 to 9 foot trees would probably
be a good average perfect-size tree. Obviously,
you’ll want a little bit bigger of a tree for a larger
room. I’ve had some elderly people come to
me with concerns about getting their trees up
this year, and I always recommend these table-
topper trees. They’re 3 to 4 feet tall and still
allow for a lot of decorative possibilities. That
way, you can still get those special, meaningful
ornaments out every year. Placing it on a table
gives it a little more height, so you can still have
a nice-sized Christmas tree without breaking
your back.
Click magazine | DECEMBER 2015 15
CM: What are some of the more eclectic
kinds of Christmas trees?
EL: Well, you have your Douglas fir,
they’re not as flush and full-looking.
They seem to look better with fewer
ornaments. I personally like to see the
branches on my tree — you can go a
little too wild with ribbon and really
smother the tree! Another recent
trend is the flocked tree, which a lot of
people seem to like right now. Those
are the kind with the light layer of
paint that resembles fresh snow. It
definitely gives a more outdoorsy,
woodsy feel to it.
CM: What’s something most people
overlook when it comes to ornament
placement?
EL: At least three different sizes should
be on any tree: really big, medium and
small. Everything doesn’t go on the
outside, you know. You generally want
to use your bigger ornaments on the
inside branches to kind of fill some
gaps and holes. This gives the tree a
more three-dimensional look.
CM: Is there a particular brand of
ornaments that you really like?
EL: I really like Raz, it’s a classic brand
that’s been around for years. It’s good
quality stuff. I carry Melrose brand
myself. But I’m not too partial to any one
brand — I’ll buy ornaments from Wal-
Mart if I think they’re cute, especially
for some of the filler ornaments.
CM: How should ribbon be wrapped
around the tree?
EL: Mesh has been a huge trend in
recent years, but ribbon is truly more
traditional and classic. More people
have kind of been going back to that
look recently. Like ornaments, you
really need three different styles of
ribbon: a wider ribbon and two smaller
ones, but they need to have completely
different patterns on them.
CM: What’s your favorite tree topper?
EL: For a lot of people, it’s a personal
preference — you can make almost
anything look beautiful with a little
effort. The big thing right now is to
make it look a little more like a floral
arrangement using picks. You can mix
your ribbon in there and use the picks
to hold it in place toward the top. But
I wouldn’t throw out the angels and
stars — they’re very traditional and can
work, too.
CM: What about the tree skirt?
EL: It’s probably the very last thing you
do, but it’s very important. It gives that
finishing touch and really completes
the tree. Another big trend that I’ve
seen at market is wooden boxes or
aluminum frontends of old tractors
being used to hold the tree in place. So
instead of a skirt, you have a nice little
twist on it. I was hoping to do that this
year, but it takes room.

THERE IS A SPECIAL HOLIDAY MAGIC THAT
envelopes the century-old Banks House decked out
in glittering hues of green, red and gold, along with
splashes of deep aqua, bright turquoise and colors of almost
every hue of the rainbow.
After all, the Banks House is home to the DeSoto Arts Council
which houses revolving exhibits of exquisite art painted from
the palettes of local artists.
The walls literally come alive with rich, vibrant paintings
and photographs, including hand-painted masterpieces of
wildlife, blues and gospel artists and still-life photographs.
Another masterpiece looms underneath the sparkling
crystal chandelier in the main foyer of the grand house.
It’s the painstaking creation of Lula Whittle of Hernando.
Her “masterpiece” is a gingerbread house that claimed
the top prize in the recent Gingerbread House Art Contest
sponsored by the DeSoto Arts Council. Whittle is somewhat
of an expert “builder” and creator of gingerbread houses.
“Back in the 1980s when ‘Good Housekeeping’ magazine
was holding their contest, I was one of the 250 fifth-place
winners nationwide,” said Whittle, a soft-spoken, salt-and-
pepper gray-haired woman with radiant eyes and slender
fingers that fold neatly into her lap.
Whittle said the special ingredients of constructing
a gingerbread house is mostly five parts whimsy and
imagination and one part hard work. “Basically, it consists of
working the gingerbread dough into a dry mixture and then
you add molasses and milk and butter,” Whittle said. “You
have to keep working it. Then, there is the Royal icing which
is made with meringue powder and confectioner’s sugar and
buttercream if you are going to eat it.”
Whittle said she often made gingerbread treats to hand out to
co-workers. Her former employer was almost as synonymous
with Christmas as the North Pole.
The Memphis State University graduate went to work at
one of the world’s largest gift wrap manufactures, Cleo Wrap,
which was based in Memphis for decades.
“We made all the wrap that was sold across the nation,”
said Whittle, who received a master of Fine Arts degree from
Memphis State, now the University of Memphis. “If you got
some of the wrap in a store, chances were that you saw one
of my designs.”
Whittle’s creations and those of other designers more
than likely graced Christmas presents wrapped and placed
underneath Christmas trees throughout the world.
Cleo Wrap closed its doors in 2011 and suddenly Whittle
found herself without a job.
“Fortunately, my severance was good enough that it took me
to that following January when I was at my full retirement
age.” Then in October of 2012, Whittle was dealt another blow.
“I was diagnosed with colon cancer,” Whittle said, reflecting
on that difficult period in her life. “When the company I
worked for closed and then I got cancer, that kind of hit me
in the face.” Whittle began treatments at West Clinic and
began to receive encouragement from friends and family to
aggressively fight the disease and be of good cheer.
“I would cry and then smile,” Whittle said.I went through
chemo and radiation. It was an everyday thing. As my illness
went on, by Thanksgiving, I was not feeling very well. I had
surgery in February of 2013 and then following that, I began
to feel better. I had done some cross-stitching but I really
had not done anything else creatively. When I heard about
this gingerbread house contest, it was the spark that helped
me get going again. I believe things happen for a reason.”
Constructing a gingerbread house is not unlike drawing up
plans for a real house, according to Whittle.
“You have to cut out the pattern and then bake your
gingerbread. You will have problems, just like with a real
house. This part and that part might not fit together. When
I was putting together this gingerbread house, I started to
throw it away. Then the little bears took over,” Whittle said,
describing small hand-crafted bears that represented cancer
survivors like herself.
Big House, Little House

“I wanted to show support for people
going through a health problem like
cancer,” Whittle said. “Then, I said, ‘I
have to finish it.’ The ideas began to
come again.”
All in all, there are between 20 and
50 bears — all wearing different colored
ribbons — to show support for people
who have gone through cancer treat-
ment. One bear doesn’t have a ribbon,
and that’s for everyone else. The bear
with the dark blue ribbon is for colon
cancer, pink is for breast cancer and
then there is the lavender ribbon
which represents all cancer.” The Gin-
gerbread House was Whittle’s present
to herself and the public at large. Her
“little house” became an expression
of hope and joy. “It got me back into
the frame of mind that I wanted to be
in,’ Whittle said. “A lot of tears, a lot of
prayers and a lot of friends have been
a part of that journey.”
Whittle’s gingerbread house and a
host of yuletide decorations and cre-
ations are now on display at the Banks
House, located at 564 West Commerce
Street in Hernando.
“Everyone says it’s the best Christmas
decorating that we’ve done, ever,” said
Margaret Yates, Executive Director of the
DeSoto Arts Council. “We have the most
incredible volunteers and artists. They
showed up to decorate the windows
and the doors. We have colorful ribbons
running down the fence with candy canes
and gingerbread men. Our artists have
been working since August on the idea that
we would decorate it like a gingerbread
house. All of our artwork was homemade.
It looks just like a giant gingerbread house
but you just can’t eat it.”

If you are looking for the ideal book
to jumpstart your plans for creating
a charming and markedly Southern
style Christmas gathering for your
own family this year, Christmas with
Southern Lady Volume II has some
pretty impressive inspiration for you.
The book’s 164 pages are riddled with
mesmerizing photographs of everything
from holiday wreaths and florals to
beautiful wrapping ideas and tempting
recipes. The holiday style presented
by this book stands out from others
primarily because of its creative twists
on traditional Christmas décor. Its color
palettes are bold, crisp, and classic with
timeless red roses contrasting gracefully
with bright green mistletoe on many of
the book’s pages.
Keeping with the Southern theme of
the book, it showcases ways to include
sentimental handmade ornaments
and treasured heirloom items for the
Christmas table. Magnolia wreaths
and weighty evergreen garlands add
to the nostalgic quality of the book’s
overall aesthetic. Silver, crystal, and
china abound on each tablescape
presented while different sections of
the book present individual takes on
how to properly decorate for the season.
For instance, one particular chapter
is devoted to a bit more rustic style
perfectly suited for a cabin or weekend
retreat in the mountains.
And, like any good book about how we
Southerners do things, there is no short-
age of food and drink in Christmas with
Southern Lady. A dedicated chapter for
perfect winter-time beverages makes
it easy to have something prepared for
just about anyone to enjoy. “Cranberry
Pear Rosemary Cider” and “Ginger-
bread Latte” both practically warm you
from the pages of the book. A seasonal
iced tea recipe lends a little bit of extra
Southern flair which will not go unap-
preciated around here.
“Praline Sweet Potatoes” and “Spinach
and Artichoke Casserole” would be wel-
come additions to any holiday table, and
the pictures presented in the book truly
beg readers to give them a try this sea-
son. As for a sweet finish to the meal,
the book has numerous cakes and other
sweet confections which are all as beau-
tiful and they are undoubtedly delicious.
“Pumpkin Butterscotch Crème Brulee”
and “Chocolate Silk Tart” are two of the
enticing selections, but none can quite
surmount the appeal of the luscious tra-
dition of “Red Velvet Cake.” If you do not
happen to have a go-to family recipe for
this traditional Christmas dessert, the
one in the book looks to be perfectly
decadent.
When it comes to this book, elegance,
refinement, and sophistication reign
supreme. Honestly, shortcuts and quick
fixes have no place within its pages. It
is about pulling out the family china
and the best linens and creating a truly
magical Christmas heavy-laden with
love, grace, and a bit of wistfulness for
the memories of beloved Christmases
long gone. It really is about doing
Christmas the old-fashioned way, just
like any Southern lady really would.
Holiday SplendorChristmas with Southern Lady Volume II packs a plethora of
holiday inspiration
Story by SHANA RALEY-LUSK
up front books
FROM PRIZED OLD-FASHIONED FAMILY recipes to time honored traditions and gleaming
decorations, the joy of Christmas certainly lies in
its details. In the South, Christmas is all about gathering
around the table or tree with the people who you hold
dearest and reflecting on those deepest and most
important beliefs and values. While the particulars may
differ from one household to the next, the emphasis on
family, faith, and really great food hold true just about
anywhere you go down here.

Not Quite Pale Ale along with the Vinyl
Amber Lager.
NEW BELGIUM BEN & JERRY’S
Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale, ABV 6.30
Ben and Jerry’s, known for their wide
and eclectic blend of ice-cream flavors,
branches out into brewing with this tasty
brown ale. An intense chocolate flavor
that slowly smoothes into subtle hints
of vanilla and caramel and malted milk
balls. Very clean and dry finish. Hints
of cherries and herbs. A fun dessert
beverage for heavy winter meals which
pairs well with Christmas chocolates and
candy canes.
GHOST RIVER MIDNIGHT MAGIC
Dark Beer, ABV 5.0
From a local brewer comes a heavy beer
to get you through the hard months of
Southern winter. Billed as a “dark beer
for people who don’t think they like dark
beer” this brew has a black color and a
smooth flavor, much like a porter or
stout but without quite as much bitter
bite. Chocolate with notes of roasted
malts, it packs sufficient punch to keep
you warm on a cold evening. Goes well
with grilled meats and game-day revelry.
LOCALLY AVAILABLE, REASONABLY PRICED, AND ULTIMATELY
delicious, these Winter Seasonal beers will get you through the long months
of the holidays. Enjoy!

ABITA CHRISTMAS ALE
American Brown Ale, ABV 5.0
Louisiana-based brewery Abita cranks
out an excellent ale for the winter
season. This dark beverage pours a
clear brown and smells of pine with
subtle nutty undertones. It tastes quite
hops-forward, with a zesty feel of burnt
sugar and spruce. Would go very well
with gingerbread and perhaps a sharp
cheese.
BELL’S CHRISTMAS ALE
Scottish Ale, ABV 5.40
In the classic American beer country
of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bell’s Brewery
continues to put out some quality
beverages with their Christmas Ale. A
reddish-orange beverage with strong
scents of caramel, smoke, and floral
bitterness, this excellent beer produces
a very drinkable result with hints
of ginger crackers and brown sugar.
Delightfully complex and layered, it
contains fine malt notes and a smooth
mouthfeel with a clean finish. Perfect
for the season, and with Bell’s new
Winter White there is a decent variety
to keep drinking straight through until
March.
AMELIORATOR DOPPELBACK
Lager, 8.8% ABV
Located on Broad Avenue in Memphis,
Wiseacre Brewery introduces their
brand new seasonal beer. Originally
brewed by monks, this strong
doppelback lager has a warm mahogany
color and smells slightly sweet with
hints of fruit and sugar. Smooth with
a pleasant toasted malt flavor on the
back of the tongue. “Doppel” means
double and this is reflected in the
alcohol content, which is more than
enough to get you through the longest
winter nights.

A Mid-Southern Night’s DreamThe husband-and-wife ballet duo of Brandon and Virginia Ramey gear up for a busy winter season
Story by MIKE LEE | Photos courtesy BALLET MEMPHIS
BRANDON AND VIRGINIA RAMEY ARE ARTISTS IN THE STRICTEST
sense — ballet being their art form — and they’ve danced for enthusiastic
audiences around the globe.
As two of Ballet Memphis’ principal dancers, the pair stands out — not just because
of their height, but their unique relationship with each other.
Brandon, at 6’5”, ranks as one of the tallest male ballet dancers in the world and
‘Ginny’ — as she’s known by friends and colleagues — stands 5'10" — tall for a
ballerina. What makes them unique in the world of ballet, however, is that they are
husband and wife. This dynamic has led to a certain synergy exclusive to the pair.
“It makes things easier because you know each other in so many ways, on so many
levels that you can anticipate which makes you both more fluid as a team,” Ginny says.
Ginny, 31, was born in Memphis and grew up in a home where her parents loved
classical music, opera, and the theater. At 5 years old, her mother enrolled Ginny in
ballet classes at Memphis Concert Ballet where she quickly embraced and loved the
dance form.
Throughout elementary school, she spent summers studying ballet and by age 17,
in 2001 she joined Ballet Memphis, having graduated early from White Station high
school. Ginny was signed to a 40-week contract and took her place in the company
of dancers, performing productions around the mid-south, including the stage at
the Orpheum.
Brandon’s career began in Framingham, Massachusetts, just outside Boston where he
was born. When he was seven, his mother would drop him off at ballet classes where his
sister was enrolled and he would watch
and eventually mimic the movements
of the students. By age 13, he knew he
wanted to dance, showing exceptional
poise, grace, and control. Realizing that
their son was gifted, Brandon’s parents
enrolled him in the Central Pennsylvania
Youth Ballet School where, over the
course of two summers he took high
school credit classes in the mornings
and in the afternoon, ballet classes. “To
be honest, I always felt awkward because
even at 13 I was already 6 feet tall and
many thought I’d choose basketball as a
career,” Brandon says.
But he still had much to learn and five
more inches to grow. At 18, Brandon
joined the San Francisco Ballet School,
but broke an ankle when he had a bad
fall during a landing which sidelined him,
and he took two years off.
Having fallen behind the class, he
resigned to move on. But he’d been seen
and was offered an opportunity to join
Ballet Memphis by Dorothy Pugh, CEO
and founding artistic director of the
company. “We love it here in Memphis,”
Brandon says. “We feel we can give more
to the community, both in performance
and in instruction since we teach ballet
as well.”
This month, Brandon and Ginny will
reprise their roles as Cavalier and Sugar
Plum in the Nutcracker.

NOTHING SAYS 21ST CENTURY LIKE A BRAND-spanking new skate park. And for residents of Hernando,
Mississippi, a three-year effort has become a reality.
The newly modeled and currently-unnamed skate park at
Renasant Park in Hernando sports all the ramps, bowls and boarder
accoutrement worthy of the pros.
The residents of DeSoto County can thank Chad Crawford and
Edward Pidgeon for their years of work to deliver North Mississippi
its beautiful new space. Crawford, 34, was born in Picayune,
Mississippi. He got his first skateboard when he was nine years
old. He and his family moved to Miramar, California in 1989 and
returned to Mississippi in 2001 and settled in Horn Lake.
“26 years later, and I love it more than ever,” he says.
Crawford met Pidgeon at the opening of the Tobey Park skate park
in Memphis. Pidgeon is a Memphis native with deep roots in the
city, but his semi-pro surfing career has taken him around the globe.
“He is probably the most caring, selfless individual I’ve ever had
the pleasure of knowing,” Chad says. “Soon after we met I learned
that he also lived in Hernando and was working on petitioning the
city to add a skate park to a large park that was being planned, so of
course I wanted in.”
Once Pidgeon and Crawford secured a location, they set up an
account for donations managed by the Parks and Recreation
Foundation and began a variety of fundraising efforts.
“Edward did the lion’s share. We set up at the farmers market to
beg for change and he stood longer than anyone else. We had an
art sale. He did a letter writing campaign that brought in $5,000. He
spent years driving countless miles to collect and recycle cans and
not a single penny went into his gas tank,” Crawford says. “When
construction began, he used his connections to secure the best price
possible on concrete and dirt.”
Crawford and Pidgeon have held numerous free skateboarding
clinics for kids and to show the community that they can make
anything happen if they are willing to work for it. In order to apply
for grants they needed a picture and some base numbers.
Pidgeon approached several of the top artisan skate park builders
for help, but no one would do it for less than $1000. Then Evergreen
stepped up. Evergreen Skate parks is a Portland, Oregon based
business that was founded by longtime skateboarders Billy and
Catherine Coulon. Evergreen Skateparks is a family-run company

that grew out of a desire to make the
most fun, finely crafted skateparks
possible.
“The owner was out of the country on a
build and he racked up a sizable phone
bill trying to coordinate with their office,”
Crawford says. “Not only did they help
but it actually cost them money to do so.
The crew that they sent was awesome.
Some of the coolest people I’ve ever had
the pleasure of working with.”
Evergreen knew how much this project
meant to Pidgeon and Crawford and
allowed them to be there every day to
give input. “The crew that they sent was
awesome! Some of the coolest people I’ve
ever had the pleasure of working with.
I actually worked beside them while
we turned our dreams into reality with
our bare hands. It was a very spiritual
experience and we were a family by the
end,” Crawford says.
The design of the park was a product of
the skateboarders involved in the build.
Pidgeon and Crawford talked with the
crew extensively about the purpose they
wanted the park to serve. They wanted a
place for both the person who has never
skated and the seasoned skater to enjoy.
“We wanted a park that was different
than all the others in the area and that’s
exactly what we got. The flow of the park
almost forces you to work on the base
fundamentals of riding so progression
is basically built into the park. If you
come out and ride a few times a week
you will notice a marked improvement
in your balance and turning. I’ve already
seen it happen,” Crawford says.
Crawford and Pidgeon want to do
a “phase two” of the park with a price
tag of $180,000-$200,000. The addition
would include a plaza/street area, a
bowl and shade structures.

Two years ago, Tasha Higginbotham was diagnosed with complete renal
failure. Now, a possible kidney donor has finally been found for Higginbotham.
After getting tested, a friend from Colorado Springs discovered that she is
a positive match. Higginbotham hopes to have the kidney transplant surgery
in December. To help with costs, a fundraiser was held at Cedar Hill Farm on
September 22. Friends and family from across the community came out to support
Higginbotham by taking part in a silent auction, purchasing baked goods and more.

Kids love the decorations, but I do this mainly for senior adults
“
”
WWalking through the door of Gladys
Fleming’s home this time of the
year definitely puts visitors in the
Christmas spirit. With an ever-present
holiday music blaring, the light scent
of cinnamon and wall-to-wall holiday
decorations, one might swear they
were transported somewhere between
the Island of Misfit Toys and a Macy’s
department store in late December.
Gladys has decorated the two-story,
7,000 square foot home every year
since moving to DeSoto County from
Texas. The effort is a labor of love, as
she prepares her home well before the
holiday season and coordinates all of
the décor herself.
“Kids love the decorations, but I do this
mainly for senior adults,” she says. “So
many are left out around Christmas time
and even more have physical disabilities
that makes decorating a chore. For a lot
of them, their visit the only Christmas
they have.
A bevy of themed rooms in the Fleming residence includes
four bedrooms, five bathrooms, two dens, a sitting room, and
living and dining areas. Each rooms is decked out with dozens
of portraits of Santa, garland, nutcrackers, snowmen, themed
Christmas trees and nearly everything else that could be
considered fit for the holidays.
Six Christmas trees and thousands of ornaments usher visitors
through the sprawling halls of the Fleming home, with each room
and the pathways between bearing a different Christmas theme.
The Night Before Christmas room, a child’s bedroom decorated
all in red, is a Fleming favorite. “My husband and I used to sleep
in that room and wake up every Christmas morning like we
were little kids,” she says.
There’s also the Village room, which presents a floor-to-ceiling
diorama of a tiny winter wonderland against a blue Styrofoam
sky backdrop lit with “stars.”
This year marks the end of the DeSoto County Christmas
House’s multi-year run. Gladys says she will donate most of her
trove of Christmas decorations to the city at the end of the year.

ENTERTAINING
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas Party
Tips for decking the halls for your perfect holiday celebration
Story by MICHELLE HOPEPhotography by CREATION STUDIOS

entertaining
'Tis the season for entertaining friends and family — here are some festive ideas to celebrate in style.
MERRY & BRIGHTChristmas lights are a must. This economical way to light up
your home and add ambiance is key in creating a festive atmo-
sphere. Solid white lights are a classic and give a magical look when
wrapped around trees and bushes. As a bonus, you can put them up
a little early and leave them for the entire holiday season to enjoy.
CHOOSING A THEME Theme is important, even when decorating for the holidays. Rus-
tic, Shabby Chic, Traditional or Monochromatic color schemes are
all options. You can go simple and just style your tree in a chosen
theme or go all out and decorate every single room in your house.

TANNENBAUM TIME Get the tree up early. Giving your-
self the most time to enjoy it will
be worth all the hard work. If you
get a live tree, set an alarm on your
phone to help remind you to water it.
A FANCY FÊTEIt’s the perfect time to throw a party
when you already have your house
decorated. Christmas is a built- in
theme - just add food and friends.
Cocktail parties are great for hosting
at your home because you don’t
have to worry about adding a lot of
extra seating. Appetizers passed or
on a buffet keep guests mingling and
moving about. You could even ask
guests to bring their favorite drink to
share which is easy on the budget.
MISTLETOE MOMENTSWhether you have a handful of close
friends sharing dinner or a full on
Holiday shindig, make sure to capture
your memories through pictures and
video. And then actually print them or
have a photo book made. This will be
something you will cherish for years
to come.

Money Resolutions for 2016Tips for a fortunate new year
START SMALLYou’re more likely to meet a small,
specific goal than you are to stick with
a lofty resolution all year long. If your
finances are out of control, start with
something manageable – like collecting
all of your account statements and
writing down your net worth. If you
want to pay off debt, resolve to earn
an extra $100 by working an odd job
or selling some possessions you don’t
really need. Then move onto one more
thing you can do. Rather than failing at
a resolution after a week, causing you to
give up, these “little wins” will motivate
you to do more.
MOTIVATE YOURSELF BY MEASURING BACKWARD, NOT FORWARDWhether we’re trying to eat better, get
more done at work, or spend less, we
tend to imagine the ideal – never eating
the cupcakes, working a disruption-free
8 hours, or saving every spare penny. Of
course, nobody ever lives up to these
unrealistic ideals, which makes us feel
like we’re failing.
Anytime you catch yourself measuring
yourself against an ideal, instead look
back at the progress you’ve already
made. It will do wonders for motivating
you to take the next step
FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIMETrying to accomplish too many things
at once makes it unlikely you’ll succeed
at any. Instead of simultaneously
resolving to pay down debt, build
your credit score and save for a down
payment, pick the ONE thing that will
make the most difference. For example:
If you’re living paycheck-to-paycheck,
save $500 or $1,000 as a buffer so
you don’t need to tap credit when
unexpected expenses arise.
If you have high interest debt, pay it off
before trying to save for other goals.
On the other hand, if you have student
loans that will take years to pay off
but need to save up to buy a car in
the meantime, save money for the car
before worrying about making extra
payments on your loans.

There’s no better way to get into the Christmas
spirit than to split a plate of cookies with the man
in red. That’s right, good ol’ St. Nick is making a
stop at Cedar Hill Farm in Hernando. Treat the kids
to a special holiday outing at the farm where they
can take pictures with Santa and make sure they’re
