Well Chosen Words

Here at Calvary, we believe that words and language matter.

That’s why we use expansive language for God and inclusive language for God’s people whenever and wherever possible.

We believe that inclusive and expansive language should (1) seek to include all people, (2) be sensitive to those who

have been marginalized in history, and (3) broaden our expressions of God (“Well Chosen Words,” PC(USA). There are, however,

ancient prayers and poignant pieces of music that are from a time and an era when the kind of sensitivity to language we

now value was not shared. Sometimes we have changed the words to better reflect our values. But other times, making changes

was so invasive to the integrity of the original piece, that we have left it as is. Rather than eliminating these prayers and songs

from our worship altogether, we hold them lightly, recognizing the cultural and historical contexts in which they were written

and committing to be reformed and always reforming in how we address God and God’s people.
