Re-registrationForms for second and third year are given in the Programme Guide as Form No.13 and 14, respectively.
In case, you find this scheme does not suit your pace and you intend to spend more than three years incompleting B.Sc. programme, you can concentrate your attention only on those courses in which you intendto take the examination. The remaining courses can be carried forward. In this way, you can plan your coursesfor more than three but not more than six years. By a proper planning every year, you can complete thisprogramme according to your convenience.
Whenever you decide to do the previous year’s course, ask for fresh assignments in the July month fromthe Assistant Registrar, MPDD at the Headquarters in the prescribed Form printed in this programmeguide, and submit them according to schedule and appear in the term-end-examination. You can also downloadassignments from IGNOU website, www.ignou.ac.in

11. DETAILS OF ELECTIVE COURSES11.1 PhysicsIf you wish to understand how nature works, both at the everyday level, and on scales of time large andsmall, you have to turn to physics. For example, you may be interested in knowing why nature is theway it is. Where did the universe come from and why is there a universe? What is a black hole? Youmay wish to know about the mechanism that generates sunlight which makes life possible, about gravitythat keeps us restrained to the earth and makes heavenly bodies move the way they do, about atomsof which matter around you is made of and on whose stability our world depends.
The answers to all such questions life in the domain of physics. Physics is subtle, yet simple. Thefundamental laws of physics look simple yet they encompass a large variety of phenomena; physical, technological and natural. The applications of the principles of physics throughout science and engineeringare fascinating. Indeed, physics is fundamental!
You will discover the world of physics through variety of courses listed below. We hope that this studywill be a rewarding experience for you.
Elementary Mechanics BPHE-101
We live in a Universe of continual motion. Electrons swarming around atoms in matter, buses speedingalong highways, planets orbiting the sun, the stars and galaxies rushing apart are all examples of matterin motion.
The branch of physics dealing with the motion of bodies as well as bodies at rest or in equilibrium iscalled mechanics. Since motion is such an important feature of the world around us, it is the logical subjectto begin the study of physical phenomena. Therefore, we are offering this course entitled ElementaryMechanics as the first elective in physics. As the title suggests, in this course you will study elementaryconcepts and laws of mechanics, including the laws or conservation of linear momentum, angularmomentum and energy.
We use the concepts and laws of mechanics constantly in everyday life and in engineering applications. We use them when we ride bicycles, lift heavy loads, play tennis or construct bridges. Many fascinatingdevelopments of the space age, such as launching of space probes and artificial satellites, are directapplications of the laws of mechanics. These laws allow us to predict with remarkable accuracy the motionof planets in the solar system as well as to explain the formation of stars and galaxies. You will studythe applications of these concepts and laws of simple and familiar physical situations in Blocks 1 and2 of this course. Their applications to more complex situations, such as planetary motion, many-particle systems, rigid body dynamics and motion in non-inertial frames of reference form the subject ofBlock 3.
Mechanics is the most fundamental area of physics. A sound knowledge of mechanics is needed to studyvibrations and waves, electromagnetism, thermal physics, quantum mechanics, special and general theoriesof relatively, etc. To study physics at the undergraduate level, this course is a must.

Oscillations and Waves (PHE-02) 2 credits
The phenomena we normally observe in nature can broadly be classified into two categories: thoseconcerned with matter and those concerned with waves. Physics courses usually begin with discussionof phenomena dealing with mechanics of matter and properties of matter. Next comes the phenomena ofwaves. Of our five senses, two deal with the waves — hearing and seeing. Our contact with the externalworld is mainly through these two senses. Sound and light, though of entirely different nature, have manyproperties in common. In this course, you will learn about waves in general. This unified approach to wavemotion is meant to bring out the underlying similarity between apparently widely differing phenomena.Even our understanding of modern physics, particularly quantum mechanics, depends on clear understandingof this course.
Before coming to wave motion it is essential to understand the physics of oscillations of an isolatedbodyas well as of two or more bodies coupled together. This course is therefore divided into two blocks.Block 1 deals with the study of oscillations of isolated as well as coupled systems. The effect of dampingand/or an external harmonic force are discussed here. Block 2 deals with wave motion. The vocabularyof wave motion, reflection, transmission and refraction of waves are discussed in detail. Superpositionof waves can give rise to beats, stationary waves, interference or diffraction. These have been discussedwith particular emphasis on sound waves..
