Method:Lesson Starter: (5mins) » In groups, students think of as many things that they associate with Wales

or being Welsh. Write answers on the board

Introduction: (5mins) » Use the attached worksheet “Wales, Europe and the World” or using a map

of the world, identify the position of Wales

Activity: (40mins)Use CLIC’s World, Europe UK and Wales section:http://www.cliconline.co.uk/en/info/world-europe-uk-wales/Choose 1,2,3,4 or a combination that best suits your learners:

1. Being Welsh - Using worksheet – “What is so special about Wales?” ask students to draw or write some of the things that they associate with being Welsh, using some ideas from the lesson starter

2. Language - Wales has its own language. Using worksheet – “A Visitor’s Guide to Wales”, ask students to write the Welsh version of some com- mon phrases on the worksheet

3. Government - Wales has its own government. Ask students in pairs to discuss and research how Wales is governed. Answers can be found in the Politics section on the CLIC website > Info > World, Europe, UK, Wales > Politics > Welsh Politics. http://www.cliconline.co.uk/en/info/world-europe-uk-wales/politics/welsh-politics/

4. Economy - In order for countries to survive they must be able to earn money, so ask students to think of what type of industry, or employment/ jobs they are in Wales. Thought shower ideas and/or use internet to re-search this – tourism, retailing, healthcare, office work, sport – think about jobs in their local area

Feedback of findings: (10mins)Choose the option that best suits your learners:

1. In groups, students use this information to produce their own information sheet, or produce an advertising poster about “Being Welsh” for teenagers of their age range

2. Presentation- students could also use their research to make a presenta-tion about “Being Welsh”

Make a list of some of our customs to prepare them for their experience. You may take many of our customs for granted, but they will be new to some people that come to this country.
