QCoal Community Dental Service brings free mobile dental service to Clermont community

Residents of Clermont and the surrounding areas are encouraged to book an appointment with the QCoal Community Dental Service during its visit from Monday 16 March 2015.

This free service, delivered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service will be in Clermont from 16 March – 28 March.

Comprising two dental surgeries in a purpose-built semi-trailer, the service provides dental care and treatment in communities where there is limited access to oral health services. The service is funded by the independently owned Queensland mining company QCoal Group through the QCoal Foundation. Anyone can make an appointment, and there is no out-of-pocket cost for patients.

QCoal Group Managing Director Christopher Wallin said the service aimed to bring quality oral health care to people in rural and remote communities.

“QCoal Foundation was established to enrich rural and remote communities, and I know from talking to our own

employees and their families that a lack of access to dental care is a major concern for them,” Mr Wallin said.

“Thanks to this service, they can now get the care they need on their doorstep, free of charge” he said.RFDS State Services Manager, Lauren Jesberg said the service had already proven popular in the towns it had visited and recently celebrated its second anniversary in Rolleston.

“The first two years of the QCoal Community Dental Service have exceeded our expectations and we’re delighted to report that over 4000 patients from more than 12 rural communities across central and western Queensland have received treatment,” Ms Jesberg said.

“Our dental experts can provide everything from a simple check and clean, through to an extraction or X-ray.

“Booking in advance is crucial, so if you need to see a dentist don’t delay and call 1800 002 507 to make an appointment.”

The QCoal Community Dental Service will visit Dingo, Rolleston, Springsure, Clermont, Collinsville, Richmond, Camooweal, Dajarra and Winton

CWA Hall

before the end of the financial year.

Ms Jesberg said the results supported research that highlighted a lack of access to oral health care in regional communities.

“So far we have provided a significant amount of acute treatment. The data we’ve collected well and truly supports the need for the service which has been made possible by QCoal Foundation,” she said.

periods. This form of exercise uses power and cardio, keeping the heart rate high and metabolizing fat at the same time.

Open GymThis is your opportunity to use the Gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

Health Matters: Protect, Prevent; Live Well

Dengue Fever OutbreakThere are currently 44 cases of confirmed Dengue Type 1 in the Cairns since December 11 2014 and Tully/El Arish communities since January 14 2015.

What is Dengue Fever?Dengue Fever is a viral illness spread by the dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti). This mosquito is found in many tropical countries around the world, including parts of Queensland. There are 4 types of the dengue virus that cause dengue fever – Dengue Type 1, 2, 3 and 4. People become immune to a particular type of dengue virus once they’ve had it, but can still get sick from the other types of dengue if exposed.

Catching different types of dengue, even years apart, increases the risk of developing severe dengue. Severe dengue causes bleeding and shock, and can be life threatening. There have been deaths in Queensland from severe dengue.

How Dengue Fever startsThe dengue virus is not endemic in Australia, which means the virus is not normally present in Queensland.Dengue fever outbreaks begin in Queensland when someone is infected with dengue overseas and arrives with the virus in their blood. This is called an imported case. A local dengue mosquito bites this person, be-comes infected with the virus, and then passes it on to other people by biting them. These are known as locally acquired cases.

The dengue virus does not spread directly from person to person.

What is a Dengue outbreak?A dengue fever outbreak is declared when there is confirmation of one, or more, locally acquired dengue cases. The dengue virus can spread very quickly if there are large numbers of dengue mosquitoes, which can mean a lot of people get sick. Previous outbreaks have ranged from a few cases in one suburb through to large-scale outbreaks with hundreds of cases across northern Queensland.

What you can doIt is important to protect yourself and your family when there is a dengue outbreak near your home. Taking the right steps can help stop the spread of dengue.

• Empty the water from containers around your home and yard so dengue mosquitoes can’t breed. This includes pot plant bases, tyres, buckets and kids toys.

• Use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin, particularly during daylight hours when the dengue mosquito is most active.

• Use plug-in mosquito repellent devices.• Spray insect surface spray around your home in dark

places where the dengue mosquito likes to hide,

such as under furniture, inside cupboards and behind curtains.

• If you or anyone in your household has any symptoms of dengue apply insect repellent to stop the dengue mosquito biting, and see a doctor immediately.

As dengue mosquitoes only breed in containers found around the house and yard it is extremely important local residents check for breeding sites every week. Remember dengue mosquitoes do not live or breed in swamps, creeks, rivers, bush land or mangroves. While other types of mosquitoes do, the dengue mosquito only lives where there are people.

Signs and symptoms of Dengue FeverThe disease has a sudden onset and symptoms may include:• fever for 3 to 7 days• intense headache and pain behind the eyes• muscle and joint pain• loss of appetite• vomiting and diarrhoea• skin rash• bleeding, usually from the nose or gums

Recovery is sometimes associated with prolonged fatigue and depression.

See a doctor if you, or anyone in your household, has dengue fever symptoms.

And remember…. Protect, Prevent, Live Well
