Farewell, Fr. Jerome Molokie

A message from Fr. Joe: I received an e-mail on Tuesday morning from Very Rev. Chrysostom Baer, O.Praem. that Fr. Jerome Molokie has been re-assigned to other responsibilities at St. Michael’s Abbey beginning the Nov. 1st. He will no longer be able to come to St. Justin Martyr and the Abbey does not have another priest available to re-place Fr. Jerome. I am saddened by this decision and surprised by such short notice of this change. Fr. Jerome will be greatly missed by our parishioners who regularly at-tend the 6:45 a.m. and 8 a.m. Masses on Sunday. I wish him well in his new duties and assure him of mine and your prayers.

Fr. Jerome first came to St. Justin Parish in August of 1995, and since then he has presided at most of our 6:45 and 8:00 a.m. Sun-day Masses. We have gotten to know him and enjoyed hearing his thoughts about our Faith and the Scriptures. He encourages us to always live our Faith in our day-to-day lives. We will miss his words of wisdom and his stories.

St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado has been providing Norbertine priests to St. Justin’s since the early 1990’s to help with our Sun-day Masses. We have developed a camaraderie with them. In

addition to Sunday Masses, their Abbot and various priests have helped at many of our Penance Services and special celebrations, the most recent being our parish’s 60th Anni-versary Mass last year. We are happy to have established this connection with St. Michael’s and with their wonderful priests, including Fr. Jerome, that have been sent our way.

Fr. Jerome will be presiding at the 6:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Masses on Sun-day, October 27. Immediately following the 8 a.m. Mass will be a reception for him. Please join us in saying goodbye, thank you, and wishing him well on his new assignment.

Treasures from our Tradition Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many

people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in fami-ly leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends.

Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to partici-pate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a di-viding line between hectic life commitments and a day of abun-dant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile cul-ture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good dis-tance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate per-

sistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness be-cause Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forev-er. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwa-vering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts. Pequeñas reflexiones

Imposible no tropezar con Dios

¿Cómo hacer participar a Dios si todo va bien en la vida? Sinceramente, se me hizo profundamente difícil poder hacer participar a Dios en mi rutina cotidiana, porque me iba bien, las cosas funcionaban mucho mejor de lo que yo esperaba, por lo tanto no habían grandes razones para pasar tiempo rezan-do y pidiendo (en ese tiempo yo solo rezaba para pedir y si no habían motivos para pedir, no rezaba), tampoco tenía necesidad de perdón y reconciliación; pues siempre he sido un tipo más o menos aburrido, que no se mete en muchos prob-lemas, por lo tanto no sentía la necesidad de ser perdonado. ¿Cómo iba a participar Dios en mi vida si no tenía necesidad de Él? Además ¿cómo iba a manifestarse Dios en medio de mis cosas si no he estado rezando, yendo a misa ni haciendo nada para acercarme a Él?

Comencé a tropezar con Dios Sinceramente creo que el Señor me miró con ternura en medio de mis luchas y dudas espirituales, y comenzó una campaña para hacerse notar, por llamar mi atención, por conquistarme. Yo sentía que se había empecinado conmigo y en medio de mi rutina cotidiana, todo comenzó a “oler a Dios”. Me lo topaba por todos lados. Cada persona me parecía una señal espiritual de parte de Dios, cada acontecimiento cotidiano me parecía un guiño de ojos venido del cielo para llamar mi atención y recordarme que yo no estaba solo. Fue cuando llegó a mis manos un breve texto de un conocido nuestro, San Juan Pablo II, quien en uno de sus discursos comentaba que «los pequeños eventos de la jornada encierran una grandeza insospechable, y viviéndolos con amor a Dios y a los hermanos es posible superar toda fractura entre fe y vida cotidiana»; fractura que el Concilio Vaticano II denuncia como uno de los “más graves errores de nuestro tiempo” (cfr. Gaudium et spes, 43). Es decir, tenemos como una bipolaridad espiritual. Somos creyentes y practi-cantes los domingos en la mañana o mientras estamos en la parroquia con nues-tros “amigos de iglesia”, pero el resto de la semana andamos por nuestros cami-nos, al margen de Dios. Tampoco se trata de vulgarizar a Dios, ni de llevarlo a lo ordinario, lo torpe, lo simplón. Al contrario, se trata de llenar de riqueza aquellas cosas sencillas que parecen no tenerla.

Acostumbrados a invitar a Dios Estamos acostumbrados (en el mejor de los casos) a “invitar a Dios” a nuestras actividades. Algunos lo invitamos en medio de una breve oración a bendecir nues-tro día, pero luego con el ajetreo de los quehaceres, se nos olvida que habíamos invitado al Señor y lo dejamos ahí, mirando de lejos mientras hacemos nuestras cosas. “El Señor quiere entrar en comunión de amor con cada uno de sus hijos en el entramado de las ocupaciones cotidianas, en el contexto diario en que se desarrol-la la existencia”. Simplemente haciendo lo que te toca hacer. . . ¡ahí lo encontrarás! Me imagino que conoces el pasaje bíblico de los “Reyes Magos” (cf Mateo 2, 1-12). Este relato es sumamente tierno, lleno de signos, elementos simbólicos y valor espiritual. Para no quedarnos cortos, aquí me lanzo yo con algo más para ponerle más sabor aún. Según yo entiendo, los Reyes Magos no creían en el Dios de Israel (nuestro Dios), ni mucho menos eran cristianos, pues Jesús no había comenzado su ministerio. Continuara…

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1823 se fundó el pueblo de San Rafael de las Quebradillas en Puerto

Rico. Este pueblo fue dedicado al santo patrón de los pescadores. Rafael, también es el ángel patrono de la salud. Aunque hoy día su fiesta esta combinada con los otros arcángeles el 29 de septiembre, en el viejo calendario este santo fue con-memorado el 24 de octubre.

Rafael (Dios salva) se encuentra en el libro de Tobías y según el autor bíbli-co, este ángel es el ángel de la guarda de Tobías. El mismo Rafael se presenta como uno de los siete ángeles o arcángeles que llevan las oraciones de los justos al trono de Dios y que gozan de la presencia gloriosa del Santísimo (Tobías 12:15).

Mi padre siempre dice que hay que pedir una cosa a Dios, la salud. Si tene-mos la salud nada nos falta. Es interesante que en latín, salud y salvación son la misma palabra, salus. El santo patrón de la salud, Rafael nos recuerda que Dios es el único que nos puede salvar, dándonos salud de cuerpo, alma y espíritu. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Que Cristo encuentre Fe sobre la Tierra

Del libro del Éxodo (17,8-13) Cuando el pueblo de Israel caminaba a través del desierto, llegaron los amalecitas y lo atacaron en Refidim. Moisés dijo entonces a Josué: "Elige algunos hombres y sal a com-batir a los amalecitas. Mañana, yo me colocaré en lo alto del monte con la vara de Dios en mi mano". Josué cumplió las órdenes de Moisés y salió a pelear contra los amalecitas. Moisés, Aarón y Jur subieron a la cumbre del monte, y sucedió que, cuando Moisés tenía las manos en alto, dominaba Israel, pero cuando las bajaba, Amalec dominaba.

Segunda carta del apóstol san Pablo a Timoteo (3, 14-4, 2) Querido hermano: Permanece firme en lo que has aprendido y se te ha confi-ado, pues bien sabes de quiénes lo aprendiste y desde tu infancia estás familiarizado con la Sagrada Escritura, la cual puede darte la sabiduría que, por la fe en Cristo Jesús, con-duce a la salvación. Toda la Sagrada Escritura está inspirada por Dios y es útil para enseñar, para reprender, para corregir y para educar en la virtud, a fin de que el hombre de Dios sea perfecto y esté enteramente preparado para toda obra buena. En presencia de Dios y de Cristo Jesús, que ha de venir a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos, te pido encarecidamente, por su advenimiento y por su Reino, que anuncies la pala-bra; insiste a tiempo y a destiempo; convence, reprende y exhorta con toda paciencia y sabiduría.

Evangelio Lectura del santo evangelio según san Lucas (18,1-18) En aquel tiempo, para enseñar a sus discípulos la necesidad de orar siempre y sin desfallecer, Jesús les propuso esta parábola: "En cierta ciudad había un juez que no temía a Dios ni re-spetaba a los hombres. Vivía en aquella misma ciudad una viuda que acudía a él con frecuencia para decirle: 'Hazme justicia contra mi adversario'. Por mucho tiempo, el juez no le hizo caso, pero después se dijo: 'Aunque no temo a Dios ni respeto a los hombres, sin embargo, por la insistencia de esta viuda, voy a hacerle jus-ticia para que no me siga molestando' ".

Dicho esto, Jesús comentó: "Si así pensaba el juez in-justo, ¿creen acaso que Dios no hará justicia a sus elegidos, que claman a él día y noche, y que los hará esperar? Yo les digo que les hará justicia sin tardar. Pero, cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, ¿creen ustedes que encontrará fe sobre la tierra?"

Que Cristo encuentre fe sobre la tierra “La fe es necesaria para la salvación”, como dice el Catecis-mo de la Iglesia católica, en su número 183. ¿Cómo con-tribuir a que la fe se mantenga en este mundo? *Para empezar, pidiéndosela a Dios, para uno mismo y para los demás. *Anunciando a nuestro Salvador Jesús, empezando por los más pequeños. *Participando en las actividades de nuestra parroquia.
