My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the gospel today, we read the story of the good Samaritan. While I plan to

preach on this scripture passage, I wanted to take a moment here and compliment the members of our par-ishes who are involved with the Saint Vincent dePaul Society. These good souls put in countless hours of their time to help people in great need. Their work is often hidden and their sacrifices go unnoticed. Our Blessed Lord sees, however, and just as He points out the charity of the good Samaritan in the gospel sto-ry today, so does He realize the time and effort of our parishioners who are tremendously generous to souls in need.

The month of July is devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus, in the same way that June was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In fact, it is a traditional Catholic custom to sanctify each month of the year with special devotional practices. This devotion ties directly to the Eucharist and the agony of our Lord. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. Pope John Paul II, in an address on July 1st of 2000, referred to “Christ’s blood as the source of salvation.”

The Eucharist is the source and the summit of our faith. It is our sustenance as Catholics. It is the real presence of Jesus and His gift to us given at the last supper. When we receive, we receive his body and blood fully and completely in the consecrated host (the body of our Lord Jesus) or the Precious Blood. The Church has defined the doctrine that Jesus is completely present, body and blood, soul and divinity, under the appearance of the consecrated bread or the wine. Even though we do not have to receive the Precious Blood to re-ceive Jesus fully, the priest must consecrate both the bread and wine for a valid Eucharist.

The devotion to the Precious Blood reminds us in a particular way of the death and agony our Lord suffered for us. We celebrated His Sacred Heart last month and we celebrate His mercy this entire year. It is His pierced heart from which His blood and mercy flowed out for our salvation. In the first century, Pope St. Clement I said, "Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world.

St. Catherine of Siena – one of two women along with St. Teresa of Avila to hold the title of Doctor of the Church – was a mystic who had a great devotion to the Precious Blood of Jesus. She offers us the following prayer:

Precious Blood, Ocean of Divine Mercy: Flow upon us! Precious Blood, Most pure Offering: Procure us every Grace!

Precious Blood, Hope and Refuge of sinners: Atone for us! Precious Blood, Delight of holy souls: Draw us! Amen.

During this month of July, may we re-flect upon the Eucharist, and in a special way the Precious Blood of our Lord, meditating upon how His sacrifice and blood shed has given us life eternal. A simple suggestion might be to take this simple yet powerful prayer, and prayer it each morning as you start your day.
