Fasting: Altering Our Lifestyle For many people, fasting is difficult. It can cause our stomachs to growl and require a great deal of will power. A healthy, positive outlook on fasting can actually lead to a clear witness among Christians to the call of the Gospel. We fast in order to place ourselves in solidarity with the poor and the hungry. For the early Christians, going without food was enabling a neighbor to eat. In 123 A.D. it was written: “When someone is poor among them who has need of help, they fast for two or three days, and they have the custom of sending the food which they had prepared for themselves.” When we are hungry, we also are forced to think about why we are fasting in the first place. It brings us closer to God, as well as our neighbor. Fasting is also more than doing without food. Our Lenten fast can mean doing without other things as well. For example, we can do without anger, impatience or whatever relay hinders us from living out the Gospel message of love. We can do without the radio, television or internet for a while each day and retreat to the joy of a little silence. We can then spend more time praying, reading the Scriptures or some other spiritual material like “The Little Black Book.” We can take some time from something we usually do for ourselves and write to a neglected family or friend. Below is in interesting take on fasting and feasting that I found sensible and practical. May it help us as we continue to draw closer to our Lord during this holy season of Lent. -Fast from judging others; feast on Christ dwelling in them. -Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of all life. -Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude. -Fast from anger; feast on patience. -Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. -Fast from worry; feast on trust. -Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. -Fast from negatives; feast on affirmation. -Fast from hostility; feast on nonviolence. -Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. -Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. -Fast from discouragement; feast on hope. -Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence. -Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds. -Gentle God, during this season of fasting and feasting, gift us with your presence, so we can be a gift to others in carrying out your work. Amen. Attributed to William Arthur Ward. Father David

St. Joseph’s Table Sunday, March 15th
following the 11:00 a.m. mass On Sunday, March 15, immediately after the 11:00 A.M. Mass, we will have our sixth annual St. Joseph’s Table. Those not attending that particular Mass but wishing to participate in the procession should gather in the narthex at 12:00 P.M. There will be a procession with the St. Joseph Statue carried throughout the church, into the narthex and ending in the Parish Hall. The litany to St. Joseph will be prayed followed by the blessing of the food. A meatless pasta meal will then be served, buffet style.
All are invited to bring a dessert dish to pass. You may bring your dessert to the Parish Hall anytime on Sunday morning after 8:30 A.M. and put it on the dessert table. Please make sure you put your name on the bottom of any dishes you wish returned.
The origin of the St. Joseph Table goes back to Sicily, many centuries ago, where there was a famine. The villagers prayed to St. Joseph and asked his intercession before God. Their prayers were answered and to show their gratitude, the villagers prepared a huge buffet and invited everyone, including the homeless and sick, to join in the feast. This is a beautiful custom and provides an opportunity to show our gratitude to God, especially for all that we have received through the intercession of St. Joseph. A free will offering will benefit our St. Vincent de Paul Society to assist in their ministry to those in need.

Be Kind and Merciful through the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal
We are pleased so many parishioners have already pledged at gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your support will allow us to Be Kind and Merciful as, together, we do God’s work here on earth.
Every gift brings us closer to our parish’s 2020 CMAA goal of $88,900. If we raise more than our goal, seventy percent of the amount over goal will be returned to us for our needs. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish!
Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA and make your gift today. Pledge envelopes are available in the Information Rack in the Coat Room of the church or at the Ministry Center. You can also return the pledge card you received in the mail from the diocese, make a gift online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or text “Donate” to 815-205-1949 from your mobile phone.
Administration Ministries
We are blessed to have you with us today—and every weekend! Our liturgies are enhanced by your presence and participation. We hope that you find the experience here at St. James to include a warm and inspiring celebration of the Eucharist and the faith that we profess.
Welcome to St. James!

Voter Information
The Catholic Bishops have once more voted that the dignity of human life is the preeminent issue in the upcoming elections.
“As Catholics/Christians we are not single-issue voters. A candidate’s position on a single issue is not sufficient to guarantee a voter’s support. Yet a candidate’s position on a single issue that involves an intrinsic evil, such as support for legal abortion or the promotion of racism, may legitimately lead a voter to disqualify a candidate from receiving support.”
—Faithful Citizenship NCCB 2016
Since it is difficult for the average citizen to find accurate information about how the many candidates stand on the issues in regards to the dignity of human life, Illinois Right to Life Action has prepared non-partisan voter information based on responses to a questionnaire, public statements, and/or voting records. This guide is not an endorsement and may not be used to advance the candidacy of any individual. For more information, visit www.VoteProLifeIllinois.com or call 630-358-0042 for assistance.
