Pentecost
The themes of the feast of Pentecost are spirit, peace and joy: something that everyone is searching for but unfortunately not many always find. Instead of “spirit” many people are bored and boredom can lead to depression and anxiety. Instead of “peace” many people are in turmoil. They are afraid, angry and distrustful. Instead of “joy” many people are sad. What needs to be learned is that becoming a spirit-filled, peaceful and joyful person is not accomplished so much by doing as it is by being. Sometimes what we need to do is let go and let God. We can let go of our fear and distrust by letting God fill us with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is one of love, joy and peace. One of the biggest mistakes many people make in trying to make our world a better place in which to live is to attempt to do everything alone, without God’s help. A good starting point is a prayer such as the following; “Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and you shall renew the face of the earth.” The first Pentecost two-thousand years ago was just the beginning of many Pentecosts to follow. The Holy Spirit is available to us today on this Pentecost Sunday. Just as the disciples let go of their fear and were “filled with joy”, we can experience the same. Jesus, who said, “Peace be with you” to the disciples so long ago is saying the same to us today. The Good News is that Pentecost does not only happen in church on a specific Sunday. It happens wherever we are, whenever we open ourselves to the work of the Spirit. We should remember that the Holy Spirit does not disqualify us from experiencing the cross. The promise of the Spirit, however, is that we will come through the pain of the cross to the joy of the resurrection. Father David

St. James the Apostle Bridge Phase begins Pentecost Weekend, May 22/23, 2021
With great joy, we are happy to announce that we will enter a new Bridge Phase in church on the Feast of Pentecost, Saturday, May 22nd at 4 P.M. Mass and Sunday, May 23rd at 9 A.M. Mass. We have received revised safety directives from Bishop Hicks and we will begin implementing them. As of this writing, the mask mandate for all in attendance remains in place. At this time, dispensation from the requirement to attend Mass also remains in place.
CHANGES and REVISIONS included in the Diocesan Revised Directives and the St. James New Bridge Phase are as follows: • Increased capacity for seating in the church • Six-foot minimum distancing is no longer
required but at least arms-length distance is recommended between households.
• Maintenance of seating area within the church which will retain six foot social distancing for those who prefer this arrangement (these will be available through a reserved seat sign-up)
• Parishioners will seat themselves (please be mindful of retaining the longer pews for use by large families)
• Both sets of exterior doors will be unlocked and parking for Mass is in both lots. (The doors to the church be opened 20 minutes prior to Mass and will be locked once Mass begins.)
• Check-in will be at both sets of exterior doors • Pastor and Deacon may now process in from the
back of the church down the center aisle. • The traffic pattern for going to communion will
be changed so that parishioners will receive communion near their section as the Minister will come to each aisle, instead of everyone going to the front of the church.
• We will have an additional Minister of Communion to assist Father at each Mass
• Every Sunday at 9 A.M., we will offer the option for parishioners to listen to Mass on the radio in their cars in the main parking lot and come to the narthex of church for communion. A Minister of Communion will be stationed just inside the doors of the church in the narthex at this Mass.
• The tabernacle will be returned to the Eucharistic Chapel.
• Beginning the weekend of July 3rd and 4th, we will expand our Weekend Mass Schedule to resume 11 A.M. Mass
• Beginning on July 8th, we will expand our Weekly Mass Schedule to include Thursday at 8 A.M
PROTOCOLS that REMAIN UNCHANGED include, but are not limited to: • Pre-registration is still required for Masses and
Sacramental Celebrations to maintain capacity restrictions via Flocknote or phone-in to the Ministry Center.
• We will still reserve several seats for those with special needs who prefer to sit in the handicapped section, available via phone-in to the Ministry Center.
• Masks are still required to be worn over the mouth and nose while inside the building.
• If people do not feel well, they SHOULD NOT ATTEND services or gatherings.
• The doors to the church be opened 20 minutes prior to Mass and will be locked once Mass begins
• Hands must be sanitized before receiving Communion.
• We will continue to offer the weekly Live-Stream available at our YouTube Channel or via the link on our parish website, stjamesge.org
We understand that these changes may be readily embraced by some and very difficult for others. Likewise it is normal to feel a mix of emotions when hearing this news. With the dispensation from the requirement to attend Mass remaining in place, we know you will pray and discern the best option for your particular circumstances. Be assured of our prayers for each and every one of you as together we remain the faith community of St. James the Apostle Parish, whether or not we are physically present in the church or continue our worship from home at this time. Administration Ministries [ STEWARDSHIP NOTE FOR TODAY ]
One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God’s Word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever those needs may be.
The offertory and ACH collection amount for the weekend of May 7/8 was $8,861.00
The collection for Preserving Our Father’s House for 4/27 - 5/5/21 was $831.00
Thank you! Your generosity is greatly appreciated & needed!

new Capital improvements underway at st. james
—All made possible through the generosity of parish families—
Thank You to our Donors e are so blessed at St. James the Apostle Parish by the continued generosity you have all shown, even in the midst of the most challenging of circumstances this past year. Sometimes, in addition to regular Sunday giving, we are the recipients of a special gift left in a parishioner’s will or a donation for the express purpose of a specific project or capital improvement in our facilities. Due to the generosity of several of these types of gifts to be used for a project or enhancements, we have embarked on a few capital improvement projects.
the pew project single question posed by Bishop Conlon long ago on his pastoral visit to St. James began a discussion revisited many times over the past several years. At the end of June, it will result in a change to the environment of our church. The question was “Why do you have all these chairs in the front of church, instead of pews?”
Those familiar with the typical seating patterns in our church pre-pandemic will recall the chairs were sparsely utilized at any given liturgy. Often times, there was no one sitting in them, or they were the last seats to be filled in the church at larger celebrations. Through the generous donations made by parish families who specified their gift be used for capital improvements to the church, we will be installing pews in the front of the church the week of June 21st.
The New Holland Pew Company who made the original pews will be making the new ones to match the style and finish of the existing ones. They are designed to curve gracefully, reflecting the semi-
circular shape of our current environment. In addition, New Holland will add privacy screens to the existing pews at the front of each section which do not have kneelers. Therefore, no matter where you sit in the church, you will have access to a kneeler.
Stained Glass windows ver the last few years we have been blessed to be given the monies to furnish the back of the church with several stained glass windows by various parishioners. Before the pandemic began, another parish family came forward wishing to supply the church with two more of these windows. Daprato Rigali Studios who created the others were contracted to do the new work as well. The project was temporarily put on hold since they are crafted in Italy. We have recently received the good news construction may begin again. It is our hope the two new windows will be installed before the end of the year.
Holy Water dispensers f you attended Mass last weekend, you may have noticed our new Holy Water dispensers installed inside the interior doors to the church. The diocesan directives presently do not allow us to use the old style dispensers due to safety concerns, however the new dispensers are automatic. These gifts provide us with the opportunity to return to one of the rituals we enjoyed before the pandemic. We invite you to try them next time you attend Mass.
If you are interested in including St. James the Apostle Parish in your estate planning or wish to make a gift for a specific project or for capital improvement, please contact Fr. David Hankus: (630) 469-7540 or [email protected]

Stepped a bit outside our comfort zone when we had a BLAST, powdery blast, that is on Color Wars day!! Afterwards we made a nice gift for our mom's, talked about the Blessed Mother, and prayed part of the Rosary. Our summer plans are so filled with service, YM in the Park, Scripture study for teens AND parents, and a few more surprises! Can't WAIT to have you with us!
Thank You from St. James School! Thank you to all of those who joined us for our recent fundraiser at Oberweis. Your eating led to a gain of $299.79 for our school!
As we wrap up our school year, we want to express our appreciation to all of those who helped with all of our fundraisers this year! Even though we didn't raise as much as in the previous years, with an ongoing pandemic, we think we did pretty good! We look forward to the time we can get back to a more “normal” way of life. Have a blessed summer!

Glen Ellyn Food Pantry Celebrates Groundbreaking at their New Location The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry officially broke
ground on May 12, on its new home at 55 N.
Park Blvd., Glen Ellyn. The 100-year-old former
parsonage of Faith Lutheran Church will be
transformed to a full pantry and warehouse.
The relocation from shared space inside Grace
Lutheran Church where it was founded by a
youth group in 1979, to a larger, dedicated
building is necessary to support the growing
number of neighbors who rely on the Pantry
for groceries and services.
