Cámara de Legumbres de la Republica Argentina
Argentine Chamber of Pulses
C.LE.R.A was founded on January 23, 1975, when a small group of producers imagined an organisation that gathered and represented all the pulse sectors in Argentina, including farmers, brokers, export traders, agro-commodities processors and industry leaders as well as researchers and experts.
Since it was established, significant progress has been achieved in production incentives, taxes and genetics, among others.
In the future, C.L.E.R.A. aspires to be a working force committed to the sustainable development of our industry and compliance with environmental policies. For these reasons, in 2001, C.L.E.R.A. joined CICILS/IPTIC with the purpose of strengthening links with the global pulse community.

POROTOS
Argentina has a long tradition in bean production and exports due to the ex-ceptional crop growing conditions in the Northern provinces of Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán. Both the climate and the soil are ideal to achieve good yields and a quality level that meets the highest stan-dards of our customers around the world.
This is partly due to the fact that one of the genetic origins of beans [Phaseolus vulgaris (L)] is precisely the Andean pla-
teau and beans were the staple food for the Incas in their days.
Additionally, the knowledge of our farm-ers, their significant technological im-provements in crop management, their investment in new equipment and their reputation for meeting their contracts in due time and form have also contributed to this situation.
Demand for beans changed the produc-
tion matrix. With the production of dif-ferent types of beans, in addition to the traditional Alubia and black beans, the country became an important supplier of Cranberries, Light Red Kidneys, Dark Red Kidneys and other beans.
Although Argentina only represents 2% of the total world production of dry beans, it is ranked third among export-ing countries after China and the United States.

The quality of our white alubia beans is notable due to their colour, large and uniform grain size, culinary qualities, thin tegument and short cooking time. Our major global markets, especially Mediterranean countries (Spain, Alge-ria, Italy, Portugal, France and Greece, among others) vouch for the high de-mand for this great Argentine product.

Another excellent product widely consu-med in Brazil, Venezuela and other Cen-tral American countries are black beans due to their exquisite flavour, great colo-ur, high nutritional value, optimum coo-king characteristics and colour of their “broth”.

Intensive selection and breeding in re-cent years improved the quality and size of Cranberry beans that are in much de-mand around the world. The comparative advantage of Argenti-ne Cranberry beans is their off-season presence (July) on the Northern Hemis-phere market (October), 90 to 120 days before the Cranberry beans produced in the United States and Canada are thres-hed and marketed.

These two types of red beans have started to gain good reputation in world markets thanks to its good color and size. Sales volumes in most demanding markets prove it.Its production area overlaps with the alubia beans area which is considered highly suitable to obtain remarkable bean crops.

The Chickpea production area is in the valley of Juramento River in the province of Salta, (70% of planting area) although chickpeas are also grown in the province of Jujuy, and to a lesser extent in the provinces of Catamarca, Córdoba and Tucumán. Kabuli is the subtype of choice of our farmers and the two types, the “Lecho-so” and “Mexicano” represent over 80% of the total. The grains are medium to large in size with a cream-colored coat. In all cases, they meet the quality re-quirements demanded by the European market, particularly Spain.
