Pentecost and Beyond The journey from Easter to Pentecost is not one easily measured by distance or time. It is true that in the Christian Church we celebrate Easter for seven weeks and the Day of Pentecost comes at day fifty. That’s how it is at First English also. Our liturgical seasons are clearly defined by the scripture texts we use as part of our worship together as well as the color of the paraments that are present in our worship space. The color for the season of Easter is white and the color for Pentecost Sunday is red, clear definitions at least for our ears and eyes. For some in the church Easter is likely to be celebrated as a single Sunday, the day we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. Pentecost likewise is a day when we celebrate the coming of Christ’s Spirit in a mighty rush of wind and fire. The reality of life in the church, however, is that clear definitions and timeframes, while helpful for planning worship, do not always coincide with everyday life. Living as God’s Easter people, forgiven and redeemed and as disciples filled and sent by Christ’s Spirit is an ongoing way of life in the world. The Spirit continues to breathe life and grace into creation each and every day. We celebrate Pentecost as the coming of the Spirit of Jesus the Christ into the world, fifty days after we celebrate his Resurrection. It is the celebration of God breaking through the boundaries of time and space and opening the whole world for the re-creating power of love. Pentecost is freedom, the freedom of the Spirit to blow where it wants. One of the most compelling qualities of life in the Spirit is that we are always being made new and being sent out to bring and receive the gifts of God to and from all the peoples and nations. As I considered what this might mean for us as the people of First English, and thought about the many places we may find ourselves during the days and weeks of summer, a clear plan emerged. Almost everyone has access to a camera, many right on their phones. As the Spirit sends you to places far or near, take a picture we can post and share. Show us the churches you worshiped at, the beauty and splendor of the world God created, the joy of volunteering at and participating in the National Youth Gathering in Detroit. You get the picture the possibilities for glimpses of life in the Spirit are endless!! Please plan to share yours. We can’t wait to see what the Spirit has in mind! Pastor Chris First English Ev.

You get the picture – the possibilities for glimpses of life in the Spirit are endless!! Please plan to share yours. We can’t wait to see what the Spirit has in mind! Pastor Chris

Update-Senior Pastor Call Process

The Call Committee continues meeting regularly. We have narrowed our list to a few final Pastors we interviewed. One of these candidates recently visited First English and our community. The com-mittee and the candidate were both very positive about the time spent together and feel that the Spirit may be drawing us to each other. We are prayerfully continuing forward with this candidate, with faith and hope that we are getting close. So far, the committee has:

Reviewed 40 candidate profiles

Considered 20 candidates for telephone or video conversations

Removed 8 candidates because they are in discussion with other congregations. Had telephone or video conversations with 9 candidates as a committee. Removed 4 candidates after initial discussions with them. Had one decline to be considered after video conversation. Had 3 video conversations with new candidates in March. Had one in-person visit/interview in April. Please pray with us for the Lord to guide us in our mission. We have confidence and faith than He will.

What do YOU think? Members of the Call Committee are available on Sun-day mornings or at your convenience via phone, email, or in person. ….from Pastor Krister….

Flat Jesus For those who were at worship on Pentecost Sunday (May 24) you heard me talk about, and show you a copy of my “Flat Jesus” in my Children’s Time. Now, we all know Jesus isn’t flat. Well, at least I hope we know this! With everyone gearing up for summer and summer travels,

both near and far, I thought we’d have a visible way to see that Jesus is with us, wherever we go. We know that Jesus is always with us, no matter where we find ourselves, but I’m hoping that this summer we will again be reminded in new and fun ways how Jesus comes with us. Whether it’s to a ballgame at Comerica Park or to the Zoo, to the lake house or to Germany and Italy, you are invited to take Flat Jesus with you, snap a photo. It is like a selfie, but with “Flat Jesus” – like the pic to the right from outside the church building. This summer project is a visible expression of faith reminding us that Jesus is with us wherever we go! Jesus does not stay in the church between Sundays, but is also outside the Church with us every day as we partner with God to do God’s work in the world. And who knows, you may strike up a conversation with someone who doesn’t know about Jesus or who needs to be reminded themselves that Jesus loves them. If you need a copy of Flat Jesus, please let me know. I can even send you one via email. Have fun this summer and don’t forget Jesus is with you to the ends of the earth, each and every day.

Pr. Krister Ulmanis

Because you asked…. Several people have asked about worship planning. This is how it works at First English: Mr. Bob Foster selects the opening and closing hymn for the late (11:00) service The preacher for the day creates the worship guide (bulletin) for both services and selects the hymns for the early (9:30) service and the Hymn of the Day (hymn after Sermon) for the late service. The presider writes the Prayers of the People. The pastors’ alternate who does baptisms, weddings and funerals.

Reminders for Kitchen Use As you may know, our kitchens at FEELC are licensed with the state as commercial kitchens. It is this license which allows us to rent our kitchens to outside vendors making the license an asset for the church. This is an important asset to maintain. The county health department rout inel y i nsp ect s com m erci a l k i tchens. I learned a lot from our inspector this fall and it is good information to share. I’ve summarized a few things from the inspection that everyone who uses the kitchen must know and follow to maintain our license.

-Wash your hands! When you arrive at the kitchen to cook or prepare food your first stop should be the hand washing sink. Wash your hands again if your hands become unclean (i.e. handle money, pick something up off the floor, touch a dirty plate).

-Wear gloves when handling food. Both of our kitchens are stocked with gloves. For example if you are serving food, you must wear gloves. If your gloves become unclean, put on new gloves. Before putting on gloves, whether it’s your first pair of gloves or your fourth, wash your hands.

-Use a three step process when washing dishes/pot/pans by hand. Wash, rinse and sanitize. There are sanitizing tablets in each kitchen with directions for use on the bottle. Dishes/pots/pans need to be air-dried.

-Leave the kitchen as clean as you found it or cleaner if need be. Many FEELC groups and some outside groups use our kitchens and we all need to do our part to keep them clean!

-If you leave something in the fridge, label it with a date and whom it belongs to or what event it is for. The refrigerators are periodically cleaned and unlabeled items may be thrown away.

-If one of our renters is using the kitchen, please respect the time they have scheduled in the kitchen. It’s OK to ask to get something out of the fridge or cupboard but you should not disturb their cooking process.

Thank you for helping the church to maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment! Should you notice anything in the kitchens that need attention, let me know!

COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH

The Columbarium has been completed and it we are in the process of contacting those that have purchased niches for placement selection.

The price of a niche is $1,800.00 + the cost of the urn and the engraving of the marble front. The niche will hold two urns and will be assigned on a “first come-first served” basis, with members being able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. If you are interested in purchasing a companion niche, please contact the church office. A brochure, with pictures, is available in the office.

On May 3, 2015 we celebrated with Andrew James Bezel, Emily Olivia Dalian, Parker Christian Rustmann, and Noah James Simone as they affirmed their faith in the Rite of Affirmation of Baptism/Confirmation. On May 17, 2015, we celebrated Lauren Nyquist, Noah LaMagno, Anna Marschner and Emily Waldner

as they took another step in their faith journey by graduating from High School with the Blanket Presentation. Astrid Karlson entered life eternal on May 23, 2015 “None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's.” Romans 14:7-8

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION Pantry You’ve heard the expression “back to basics.” This time we’re talking food. Each month we’ll ask members to donate another “basic” to restock our pantry. June is, again, everything month. Please consider buying one or two items for our shelves. Obviously if you find a great deal for pantry basics, bring ‘em in. There’s always room for more! Please be mindful of expiration dates on all food items. Unfortunately we have had to remove items from the pantry because of expired dates. Thank you for your help! Board of Social Action

SAVE THE DATE - Octoberfest will be on October 2, 2015!

FELC REFLECTION GARDEN ENGRAVED PAVERS

Have you noticed the “Reflection Garden” located on the east side of the church? This area has been transformed into a quiet, peaceful green space for sitting and reflecting. A donation of $50.00 or above, will give you the opportunity to have an appropriate message engraved on one of the paver bricks. Order forms can be found in the magazine rack in the Gathering Area.

The latest up date from Shawn Keith on the

organ repair……….

Shawn Keith here with an update on what I found

when we removed the Antiphonal division of the

Möller organ. I was very startled and pleased by the

amount of leeway we're going to have in revoicing the

pipework for that division. It is almost like having

brand new unvoiced pipework! Because of the voicing

styles of the era in which the organ was built, every-

thing is going to work in our favor to give it the tone

we are shooting for. Obviously, we are very pleased

by that.

At the moment we are preparing the wind regulator

and all of the pneumatics for the wind chests in that

division to be re-leathered. For that division, that will

be a relatively quick process, because there is not

much there that needs to be done.

We are also preparing the pipe work by cleaning it, by

removing decayed felt gaskets, and by measuring for

new tuning sleeves.

I have been doing a fairly thorough inspection of the

little console from up front. It turns out there are

several structural deficiencies in that pedalboard that

will prevent us being able to use it. Depending on what

we find when we pull the big console, it is likely that

you will end up with a new pedalboard rather than

trying to reconstruct the one you have.

Kind regards,

Shawn
