Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

racking up. In the 35th minute Hanslip was challenged just three yards out with the goal at his mercy after Cooper had dinked the goalkeeper.

At the other end Jason Foster should of further enhanced the visitors lead but could only drag his shot wide of the mark after a lovely flowing move.

Then came 45 seconds of ecstasy for the Owls. Firstly Cooper was played in by Oglesby who clipped the ball home past the advancing keeper. Then straight from the kick-off, the ball was won back, played into Grants feet, his shot went past the keeper but Danny Fields’ clearance only fell to Robertson 5 yards out who had the easiest of chances to put the Owls in front in a remarkable turnaround.

Two further notable chances before the break happened when Cooper unleashed a rasping 30 yard driver which beat the keeper all ends up however the shot rattled the crossbar and went out for a goal kick. The second of the chances came in injury time when from a corner Oglesby found, the ball fell back to the winger but his curled effort was wide and high of the mark.

The referee blew for half-time once the game had restarted and it was the Owls who were the happy of the two sides as B o r r o w a s h l e f t t h e f i e l d v e r y despondent and looked like a beaten team.

With no changes at half time and all the 22 players accounted for, the referee restarted the match. It was clear from Borrowash’s body language during the break that they were not really up for the fight in the second half. However, nothing could have been more wrong as they immediately went in search of an equaliser and should of got it within 40 seconds as Massingham missed a header from 5 yards out.

At the other end Grant missed yet another chance to break his duck for the season, this time slotting the ball past both keeper and post after being under pressure from Fields.

It took a while for the second half to fully take off but it was the Owls who

were flying when Cooper beat one man down the wing, and he laid the ball off to Richardson who sweetly stroked the ball home past the sprawling Frost. The delight on his face was evident that he has scored in the historic FA Cup.

There was more delight just 4 minutes later in the 61st minute when Grant finally broke his duck. The 25 year old striker picked the ball up 25 yards out and left fly blasting the ball into the back of the net. He sprinted past all his teammates to the dugout and jumped on manager Marcus Newell followed by a trail of teammates.

The v i s i to r s t r ied to get themselves back in the game in the 64th minute when Fields attempted to lob Beattie from 30 yards but it was just too powerful and went over the bar.

The Owls made their first substitution in the 65-minute when they brought on Jack Debnam in replace of Robertson. This mean the Owls attacking intent was reinforced with Debnam's pace and drive at the forefront.

However, as the Owls pushed to further widen the gap, holes started to appear in their defence and two chances in quick succession nearly paid off for Borrowash. Firstly, Curtis Williamson missed a golden chance after Ross Coxon’s cross was inch perfect, however the finish couldn’t match the build-up. Secondly, Captain Dave Leigh only had Beattie to beat in the Owls goal but he completely missed the ball with the goal at his mercy.

The game went from bad to worse for Borrwash’s Fields’ as he was shown a straight red card for an apparent elbow on Oglesby.

The Owls had just over 20 minutes left on the clock when the visitors went down to 10 men. This advantage meant that the hosts saw plenty of the ball in the final stages and were creating chances galore.

However, all of these where missed. Grant was guilty of missing two clear cut chances whilst Nathan Emson, a 74th minute substitute missed another late on. Grant curled an effort wide of the mark from just outside the area,

then was denied by keeper Frost when bearing down on goal late on. Whilst Emson only had the keeper to beat with two minutes left after sprinting past Lee Stevenson but his angled shot was just too high.

The final whistle came after three minutes of stoppage time, as Marcus Newells’ men marched on into the next round of the FA Cup.

THE CONTENTS

Cleethorpes Town ran out 4-1 winners in the FA Cup Preliminary Round against Borrowash Victory this afternoon. Goals from Marc Cooper, Brody Robertson, Jack Richardson and Louis Grant was enough to see off the visitors after they themselves had taken the lead through Phil Massingham.

The Owls started with the same line-up

as on Wednesday when they were defeated 1-0 by Albion Sports thanks t o a 9 4 t h m i n u t e penalty.

The game kicked off at precisely 15:00 after the pleasantries had been finalized and it was a near perfect start for the Owls as Grant attempted a cheeky but effective overhead kick from just inside the area but his ambitious effort was wide of the target.

The hosts kept pressing in the opening stages and Cooper should of scored but dragged his effort wide of the mark. Grant was making a nuisance of himself in

the oppositions half and had the keeper worried when he was bearing down on goal in the fourth minute but the pass was just too strong and the Mark Frost dealt with the situation well.

Borrowash could not get going in the game and could not muster up a chance whilst the Owls were playing free flowing football, creating themselves even more

chances. It was Richardson this time to have a shot on goal but his 18 yards effort was easily dealt with by the keeper.

Frustratingly for the Owls, the missed chances in the opening ten minutes were costly as Borrowash took a shock lead. A ball was played in from the left hand side from a free-kick and was flicked on by Massingham into the back of the net sending the away fans into raptures. The delight was evident on the player’s faces as they wildly celebrated in the corner.

Near enough straight from the restart the Owls should of equalised however Cooper slid his shot wide of the mark after turning his marker inside out.

The chances kept on coming to equalise and it was in the 24th minute that the best chance so far was missed. Grant managed to find space inside the box after a clever run by Oglesby found the striker who only had the keeper to beat but could not hit the target from close range.

Just minutes later the home fans where up on their feet appealing for a penalty after Grant appeared to be bungled to the floor however the referee was having none of it and waved away all the appeals.

It was becoming a frustrating afternoon for the Owls as the chances missed kept

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

GOOD evening and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for the visit to Parkgate in our second home NCEL Premier Division tie...

Good evening ladies and gentlemen.

What a first week we have just had in our first season at this level. Started off with a superb victory away at liversedge.

Then on Wednesday we were hit with a last gasp penalty against Albion sports and S a t u r d a y w a s j u s t a n unbelievable experience for the whole club with our first

ever FA cup tie, winning by four goals to one.

It has certainly been an hectic week but one I will never forget. The lads have definitely stepped up their performances and hopefully they can continue that this evening where we welcome Parkgate from Rotherham.

What I have seen this season is a great togetherness from everyone involved. Marcus has everyone singing off the

same hymn sheet and this shows on the pitch. We all saw what it meant to Louis Grant on Saturday and his celebration just showed what everyone was feeling. It was fantastic to see.

Hope you all enjoy tonight's game. And we w i l l be celebrating another three points come the final whistle.

COYO!

P O W E L L

What a day Saturday was. The emotional high from the day is still there especially in the d r e s s i n g . T h e l a d s played superbly on the day and created many chances, we probably should of won it by more but what a resu l t . Cleethorpes Town won an FA Cup game, it’s what dreams are made of.

Anyway, we must move f o r w a r d n o w a n d concentrate on getting back to Premier Division action tonight against Parkgate. They are veterans of the division now since they won the Division One title back in 2006/07 so they have the experience over us at this level.

However, they did not have a good season and only survived relegation due to the bottom few teams not picking up many points. They have started their season

with the same results as the Owls so we know t h a t t h e y c a n b e dangerous.

We have a couple of lads who are unable to play due to being away or being injured but we have great set of players here and will ultise our full squad.

There is a coach that will be going to our next FA Cup tie away at Gresley in 10 days time, it’s only £5 and will be a great day out. Put your name down, the list is at the Linden Homes Club.

Cleethorpes Town A FC played a very strong CGB H u m b e r t h e r m F C o n Tuesday night in what was only the second game s i n c e t h e t e a m s formation, at Fulstow playing fields.

The starting 11 featured 9 players under the age of 22 and 6 under the age of 18 in a youthful looking side. Grant Bailey made his first appearance for the team in goal with a back four of Sam Willett, Matt Russell, Tom Wingate and A debut for Danny Revill. George Hairns, Brad Mitchell and James Sawdon made their f i r s t a p p e a r a n c e s i n

m i d f i e l d a l o n g s i d e captain Tom F u r n e l l . C a m e r o n Donson and Ollie Kirton cont inued u p f r o n t . D a v e German was making his f i r s t appearance f r o m t h e bench also.

The game started at great pace with t eams t r y i n g t o p l a y football and keep the ball down.

The football played in the first half was a joy to watch with some quality interplay creating a couple of half chances but on the whole the Owls kept the ball well.

In the second half CGB Humbertherm took the lead through Danny Trott with a quick-fire shot that found the bottom corner.

The Owls then pressed for the equaliser and carried

on playing the football that again brought us chances with Ollie Kirton finding the bottom corner after some great work from George Hairns. His snap shot deceived the keeper and found the back of the net with 10 minutes of the game to go.

The Owls got their just deserves with just five minutes on the clock to go after some great build up play between Brad Mitchell and George Hairns. The ball found James Sawdon who with a 'Cruyff' turn spun his defender and smashed a right footed shot across the keeper into the bottom corner of the net. The game was another great workout for the lads and the Owls would like too thank Geoff Broom and his lads and wish them luck for the forthcoming season.

Managers Mick Gibbons and Andy Cawte were pleased with how the lads are playing and are proud of the performance, attitudes a n d t e a m w o r k s h o w n throughout .

“Wining the league was the best feel ing ever. To work so hard for something and to win the t it le being at home was very surreal.”

Lawrence, you were injured during a game late last year, how did the recovery go and are you now fully fit and ready to take on the Premier Division? The recovery went well although it was a long wait to get back fully fit, I'm still a little bit off where if like to be but having a full preseason to get that sharpness back will certainly help me.

Do you like to train or do you prefer to be on the pitch kicking a ball about? How does work effect your training?I have always liked training , I think every player prefers being on the pitch playing in a game but for me anytime playing football I enjoy. Work are really good they understand I have other commitments and that my football has always played a big part in my life.

So, take me back to the beginning, how did you first get into football?I was 9 when I first found an interest in football which today would be starting football a bit late, I was born in to a footballing family I really had no choice that's all we speak about !!

You joined CTFC in 2012 from Brigg Town, how was the transition between the clubs?I joined CTFC from Brigg town in 2012 both clubs being fairly local I adjusted pretty well I knew of had heard of most of the lads playing for Cleethorpes at the time.

Who did you make your debut against for The Owls and how did you find it?I actually helped Cleethorpes out when I was at Brigg, CTFC had an away trip at Emley and they where struggling for a centre back with Brigg having a good relationship with Clee they asked me to play which I jumped at the chance to do we ended up winning the game 2-3 and I felt a huge buzz about the club and later ended up joining the owls.

You played at left-back most of your Owls career, is this your preferred position? I like left back or the role of a wing back that allows me to get forward more but I do like to play centre back also and I wasn't too bad as a striker either !!

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you went through?Winning the league felt amazing, to work so hard for something and to finally achieve it was the best feeling ever specially in the way we did it also being almost out of it to winning it without kicking a ball was incredible.

Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is?I think Marcus appreciates and understands every player is different and every player learns in different ways. He has the ability to build not just a group of talented players but a talented team that work together to gain success.

What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion?I believe if we play to the best of our ability and understand what is needed to get out of the division we will be fine. We have a team of players in which I believe are more than capable of playing this league and higher. I tip us for top 3 home form will be key.

Lastly, according to my records you have scored 2 goals for the Owls, is this true? And tell me about your favourite game you have been involved in? I scored agains Pontefract last season I played left wing a position I really like, it allows me to get forward a lot more The finish wasn't too bad as I lobbed the keeper inside the box. Possibly my favourite game whilst playing for Cleethorpes town has to be against Basford. I believe we beat them 2-0 away in the FA Vase the boys that day were unplayable.
