Te Capitol Teatre in downtown Clearwater now offers a high ca liber perormance venue close to its award- winn ing beaches. Following a meticulous $7 .6 mil lion dollar tra nsormation, it reopened in December 2 013 to rousing appro val by locals and visitors. Te Capitol Teatre has a colorul h istory. Since its opening in 1921 as a vaudevil le theater , this popular perormance hal l has been the venue or thousands oconcerts and plays. By 2008, the Spanish Mediterranean revival structure was in desperate need oa acelif . Backers othe well-known area theatre Ruth Eckerd Hal l convinced Clearwater city officials to partner with them and invest millions to transorm it back to a majestic theater and perormi ng center. Te plan necessitated the acquisition othe adjacent 5,600-square-oot Evening Sun building or expansion areas, a llowing or a larger, more opulent lobby and 125-oot balcony on the second floor. Te addition osix loge boxes, a state-o-the-art thrust stage and richly adorned interior decor complemen ts the excellent natural acoustics and well-planned sight vision. During renovation, a bit ohistory was uneart hed when a Wall oHonor was ound beneath layers oplaster listing all t he names oClearwater servicemen who served in World War I. It has been painstakingly preserved and on display as part ot he Capitol Teatre’ s colorul pas t.
